Alert: somewhat narcissistic post! You have been warned.

Exam results came out in the UK yesterday, and all went well enough for me to have the chance to study in what is probably the best university in the UK for maths (Cambridge) :smoker::D. I'm not trying to boast or anything (although I'm certain that it comes off that way), but I'm just really happy with what I've achieved, and couldn't help but share it with you guys. It's a dream I've had since about 7-8 years old, and it's finally come true.

What's weird is that my dad, an INTP, studied maths at Cambridge, and is in an industry that I would very much like to work in.... It's almost unsettling.

I'm guessing that INTPs are under-represented in the the top universities, because they tend to be too lazy at school. It's a shame that school determines the course of your life in that way. Anyway, if anyone has any questions, ask away, be it about my work habits, school, whatever. Or maths...

Congrats Cooley. What are you studying? Math and what? I never heard math called maths? In the U.S. it's math, plural.

Just maths (or math). In England you just study one subject right from the start (only maths even on the first day), unless you pick the equivalent of a double major or specific course such as PPE (philosophy, politics, economics). Anyways, thanks guys.

Btw, I'm not sure about pure vs applied yet, although probably pure.

Interesting, here in the States most universities offer Math, Stats, and Math EDU, atleast.

What's the extent of math education for high schoolers over there? In the States most students learn through algebra and maybe pre-calc, but taking a college semester or two worth of calc is not out of the question.

Btw change your post back to "I'm not sure, but I'm basically sure" :)

You noticed...

Anyway, you can do stuff like maths and philosophy, maths and computer science, and other options, but you decide on your course before you go (although there is room to change). Once you're there, it's all you do.

That's wonderful, I'd be very happy if I were you. Here in the states you often see kids of parents that go to Stanford, Harvard also get into the same school, so maybe the schools like to see a legacy like that. Neat that your Dad is an INTP and you're following him. What industry does he work in?

Yeah the Brits call it "Maths", never knew why that was.

Hedge fund industry...

As a note, I don't think it matters whether your parents have been to some place or not. At least here in the UK, they judge it based on your application only.

Congratulations, Cooleydudey! :) Fulfilling a childhood dream can feel deeply fulfilling. Have a big hug from me across the pond.

EDIT: And I imagine that your dad feels proud: "My boy is just like me".

Congrats! You're fully entitled to boast (if the first post could be called boasting!).

Take your shirt off and do a lap!

Very impressive, must feel great!

Edit: that second part sounds pretty daft given the thread title...
