Just wanted to check out what kind of intellectual pursuits the forum (and to some extent INTPs) prefers. Hope we get enough votes for some reliable results. It will be interesting to see the humanities/science dichotomy as well.

Just to clarify, this is not about your favourite school subject or job, it's about your favourite intellectual pursuit in your free time.

EDIT: just realised I forgot reading, which is rather major, just pick other and say reading if this is the case. Also, I recommend you look at my next post.

You grouped all of Art together :slashnew: Just like other sites only covering visual art. Politics and Economics are some others possibly forgotten.

Painting
Sculpture
Music
Photography
Dance
Architecture
Film
Theatre
Literature
Design
Crafts

I'd say music then psychology(maybe film also), I'm trying to get into programming but eh.

I grouped all engineering together. I grouped all languages together. And so on. Still, if anyone feels one of these broader categories isn't fair, they should vote in the poll and then post specifically, saying for example environmental engineering or music etc.

Lunch could be combined with eating, and to make it an intellectual pursuit you could call it 'food tasting'. Therefore it is in some respect an art, which is grouped and already included :)

I put literature, because though I'm mostly interested in visual/ graphic narrative (film & comics) they still classify as 'texts' and so can be studied under literature.

The ratio of the polls is what I would expect so far. :)

What the.
How on earth am i ought to choose ONE >>. I'm studying engineering into chemistry, and loving the maths part most. Herpderp. Asside from my uni studies, philosophy and psychology both constantly tempt my brain aswell.

ENGINEERING
-maths
-chemistry
-physics

+ philosophy / psychology

I grouped all engineering together. -- I personally find it hard to distinguish between maths, physics and theoretical engineering.
Many equations are no more than maths and physics, but any actual solution can be either maths / physics (purely analytical) or engineering (numerical / approached)
For example regarding fluid dynamics, Navier-Stokes equations are no more than maths and physics, where as most of it's solutions would belong to engineering. Besides, how would one choose physics without choosing maths? I'll just go with maths in the poll for the sake of it, and for the mathematical approach to everything.

Brain stuff: I really don't know shit about psychology or neuroscience. I just like introspecting and getting whatever knowledge I can about the nature of the mind. It's involved with everything.
Computer stuff
: Constantly finding better ways to do things and look at things is fun and computers are a great playground for that. I'm in school for undergrad comp sci.
Music stuff: I have bouts of inspiration to experiment with guitar, piano and computerized creation of music. The interest extends to the way we perceive music and how that's represented in simple rules.
Games: I play them for the mental challenge. I've put a lot of time into Starcraft and I've learned a lot about myself from it. Chess also interests me but I'm not good at it yet.

Ah if only there were checkboxes

The difficulty with this question is that the answer always changes. INTPs have far ranging interests, while I have three main interests (Computing, Music, Photography) I continually dabble in other subjects (Physics (PhD program), art, economics, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, ...).

At the moment I'm trying to learn about cinematography, especially on how large block buster films are made. 'The Hobbit' video blog entries are useful in this regards.

In the most poetic form; Art.

basically any synthesis between intellectual pursuits seems, to me, to be an Art-form.

where's the poll where we can select multiple subjects.

Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Art, Reading, Philosophy, Psychology ....

This is INTP-forum after all; The Jacks of All Trades (except the boring ones (subjectively determined) )

I did think of allowing multiple options, and perhaps I should have, but the goal was to find out the dominant intellectual pursuits. But wow, this forum attracts the geek squad!!

The problem with this poll is that you have to choose one interest. My interests range a lot, mostly they depend on the problem and time. There is no subject that I am interested in regardless, every subject has many boring and sometimes even pointless details, while any subject has at least some interesting details.

Agreed, but the poll is very much about the intellectual pursuit you keep coming back to, the one that you think is your favourite. I wanted to find the DOMINANT intelllectual pursuits of us INTPs. Heck, if I allowed it, everyone would pick half the options....

Yup. That being said, maths, engineering and exact sciences... Are typically rather close together. (Well not all engineering, but atleast the parts i'm most interested in.)
Computer science and engineering often overlap aswell.
Etc.
Perhaps you should rather try to go for
'exact sciences' // 'technology' // 'human sciences (including psychology)' // 'philosophy' // 'arts' etc. Idk tho >:

Well it's too late now so let's stop derailing and moaning, and let people post their explanation for "other" or what kind of art they're interested in or their analysis of the poll etc.
