If you want a thinking show, try Death Note or Code Geass.
If you want action, try Hellsing Ultimate.
Tell me what you think ;)

I don't think Death Note is a very "thinking" show, sure the narrative is complex but it's a pretty superficial form of complexity aimed solely at generating suspense. Sort of like Nolans films, they feel complex because you're introduced to new information and systems, but once you got it an em down there ain't much left to think about or ponder over.

Haven't seen Code Geass tho!

Rwby is great. The episodes are too short, but very enjoyable.

I've been watching through Spice and Wolf again. I really love this show. I'm actually learning about myself watching it. It has such a clever way of tying love, economics, and human nature together. I wish that the novels were translated farther in the story.

I wouldn't fully agree with the premise that DN is complex only because of the new info. Basically when you get anything at all down there is not much to ponder about, so it's about catching up with the flow, I guess. But even if you do, the badass characters do not hesitate to fill in that hole.
Code Geass shares a lot of elements with the DN, but it has a lot more magic and techno in it. Basically the same drill, only that CG is maybe a bit more enjoyable to watch (if Death Note had 100 episodes, the viewers themselves would eventually get heart attacks). It has a lot more additional stuff besides the plot that DN does not have, but no spoiling.

First three episodes would be enough to tell you what the show is all about.

UPDATE: Sorry, just realized that Zero appears in episode 4. So yea, that is an utter must to know what the show is all about.

HAVE MY CHILDREN.

Code Geass is certainly amusing, but hardly a thinking show. Particularly R2, which is essentially an endless sequence of ass-pulls (which, I suppose, does make it similar to Death Note).

In less depressing news, Le Chevalier D'eon. 18th century France. Vengeance. Decadent nobles. Cross-dressing knights. Zombies. Poets. Revolutionaries. Badass biblical quoting.

Don't forget the soundtrack which is just as messed up (but enjoyable) as the series

That's got to be the weirdest gender bender series that I have watched to date not to mention the bromance and literal brotherly romance.

However, that anime made me more interested in France compared to the Three Musketeers

Hmm. I guess I will have to make myself a bit clearer.
Anything that requires you to (usually) think (a bit) about what a certain character will do to avoid a series of events, qualifies as a thinking show to me, it there is enough of it, of course.

But I did like R1 more than R2, though. And I will take a look at the anime you suggested.

For reasons beyond my power I was forced to follow Shingeki no kyojin, which just finished, and gods, what an overhyped turd. I can't even believe it was 25 episodes long, considering nothing happens: it's a ton of fillers and cliffhangers and a conflict that is never resolved, with a cast of utterly disposable one-dimensional characters. The only thing the show's got going for it is the art. That it is being praised as a 10/10 show just reveals the utter idiocy of humanity.

A thinking show would be one where profound social, ethical or philosophical issues are the very essence of the story, explicitly stated or not, and not a superficial gloss on the plot. A show that makes you wonder how a complex plot will be resolved is just a thriller (which is a different, not mutually exclusive, category).

A valid definition. Seems to be that I am mainly biased towards a real-time chess game, then.

Just saw Gunbuster. I'm not sure I understand. :ahh:

Where dat pacing? Where dat character development? Surely, naming a character Jung Freud is intended to mean something  Where -

Anyone else noted that in japanese anime land inferior intuition is superior intuition? (Ruffy, Naruto etc)

compare that to the colorfulness of EVERYTHING vs real life, the grandiosity.

The time dilation would make sense of my main complaint, which was that I felt the pacing was too quick to the point that the characters felt a little one-dimensional.

In all likelihood, it's probably one of those cases where I just missed the important elements that bring depth to all the other parts of the show. Simply don't understand - a case from ignorance. :D

A scary place (my mind)
1. Elfen lied
2. Gantz
3. Bible Black (does this count?)

I haven't seen much anime and I would consider Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon to be cartoons not anime (even if they actually are anime).

Edit: Does anybody like Invader Zim? I love it, too bad it got cancelled.

Haven't tried invader Zim. Hmm...old favorites :
(1) Kaiji: unhealthy intx who keeps getting into underground gambling.
(2) hajime no ippo: boxing, sometimes dragon ball style.
(3) FLCL: pretty much how I saw the world as a 10 year old.

I saw attack on titan (shingeki no kyogin): it has action, and a jigsaw puzzle plot. I enjoy the emotional roller coaster.

Samurai Champloo. I'm planning on watching Steins;Gate, Durarara, Death Note, and Full Metal Alchemist once I have the time to do so. I think I might like them.

Code geass and Death note are one of my favourites, but I did enjoy a lot of titles mentioned. It's nice to find a list of potentially good animes I haven't heard before.

All that said, Elfen Lied, oh my... It blew my mind with sadness, happiness and serenity, changed my world view a little. And it's beautiful. Also, that stained lilly in a red room- my favourite scene of all video media. Not quite sure what that says about me.

I wish I could get back into anime.

It's absolutely beautiful.

I feel too old to really feel it.

Speaking of feeling it. I remember I watched an anime on Netflix canada that was amazing.

It was about that girl who's Father or parents died and just happened to find this house full of men that turn into animals when touched by a girl.

So much of the anime on netflix is so sexualized.

Anything else I should watch that I could find on netflix canada or at my library?
