What is Extraverted Intuition exactly...I am curious because I stumbled across this:

INTPs who have developed their Extraverted Intuition to the extent that they regularly take in information in an objective fashion, rather than strictly to feed Introverted Thinking, will enjoy these very special gifts:

* They may be exceptionally intelligent, and make ground-breaking discoveries.
* With a well-developed understanding of their environment and the ability to act very quickly, they may good athletes.
* They're typically able to communicate their ideas more concisely than the average INTP without sacrificing accuracy.
* They understand the benefits of close relationships, and understand how to support and enhance these relationships.
* They see the value of principles that are not strictly logical
* They have attractive and compelling personalities, and are well-liked and accepted by most people.

That's pretty much me to a tee, except the last one. I have an attractive and compelling personality but only to the right person (who are few), and I am well-liked and accepted by many in that I am rarely disliked, but at the same time rarely part of the in-group.

I want all of that too! I'm afraid I didn't receive it for my last birthday. :(

Ne has been described as divergent. It takes seemingly unrelated information and finds creative ways in which it can relate. Most of the points you listed refer to Ne's ability to keep one keenly aware of all possibilities, even those previously not thought of. Doing this can help us understand others' views, or be more accepting of things previously considered unimportant by seeing the big picture, instead of just facts.

I'm not sure exactly where Ne sits for me. But I identify with it strongly. When talking to some (but not all) INTPs, I can 'feel' that I am more flexible, also quicker mentally (not quick as in smart, but quick as in can switch topics very quickly without losing anything while they are still processing the switch). It must be my willingness to let go of Ti which slows down things by analysis (at least that's how it works for me). When I'm in Ne mode, any idea passes through, it doesn't matter if it's logical or not. The logic discards (or proves!) it later, after conscious reflection, not the other way around.

I know a couple of INTPs (out of 4) who have the last thing on the list. The couple I am thinking of are also the ones that impress me with their N (and are the brilliant ones).

I think those descriptions always present things too rosy and it gets people's hopes up. But intuition is how we become sociable so if you want success in life it's the way to go.

SlyGuy, notice how you scored 68% Intuitive. You're only 18% in the direction of being intuitive rather than sensing. I would look at the qualities of sensing and see if you possess any of those you can draw from, sort of a hodgepodge, taking aspects from both.

I'm an INTP, but when I have to clean and do scheduling stuff I become an INTJ. I'll literally have days in which I write a todo list and in that day, everything on that list MUST be solved. I gogogo all friggen day and when I talk to people when I'm in this mode, I can just see it in their eyes how differently they view me, it's funny.

I may try to schedule these bouts of INTJ-ness on a monthly basis to make sure things get accomplished. For you, though, it may be integrating Sensing benefits into your life. You may find you naturally possess some of these qualities. Or not, it's really something a test can't determine and you have to get a feel for who you are... this is where your intropersonal learning comes into play.

You are capable of analyzing your own thoughts and action, and at the very least able to understand changes you should make. The trick will be carrying out those changes in a positive way as an INTP. People who can't critique themselves have trouble growing in my view, but this is perhaps one of the best gifts you and I both have been given, self-analysis.

I WANT ALL OF THAT

That's interesting - that is pretty much what I'm like irl and interestingly those attributes are things that I've developed over time. I definitely wasn't like that as a teenager!!

Reflecting upon how I developed that I guess it's through certain friendships - I have two very close friends who are ENTP who helped me to come out of myself and I learned not to be so scared of people with their help. I'm still not very good at intimate relationships but getting better at it. I'm an amazingly good mother though so having children has taught me a lot.

My father used to make me justify everything I said and I would have huge debates with him as a child - I hated it at the time because he always 'won' but it did make me clarify my thoughts and help me communicate them.

Because I ended up going into a profession that was about helping people lead their own lives (occupational therapy) it meant that I had to listen to others and learn to respect the way they chose to lead their lives. I found that there was a lot of wisdom out there and began to see that not only was life more complex than I had thought, but also that ways of living were much more varied.

All that makes me wonder if a way of helping to develop the Ne is to do some sort of voluntary work helping less fortunate individuals like helping out in a homeless shelter or visiting elderly people. Teaching is also a good way because you have to find ways to help others (who are not like you) learn, so you have to pick up cues from them. So I guess anything that forces you to notice and listen and respond to others (excluding parties obviously) could be helpful.

Lost, after wandering irresponsibly away from the
Ne is the function we mainly use to process incoming information: as echoplex said, it finds connections between seemingly unrelated pieces of information, occurrences, circumstances, and so forth. It's also the function that comes up with possibilities, the workhorse of the 'what if' thoughts that may or may not fill your head. It's not concerned with whether or not something is logical or makes sense from the viewpoint of T/Fi (whichever it's partnered with), but practised Ne is often right on the button when it forms a theory. I've found that it's often more reliable-- and almost always at least three times quicker-- than Ti in evaluating a situation I'm in, and it's also the function that helps us decode facial expressions and subtle nuances of meaning without thinking about it. (Si helps in that, too, though, by comparing current information with past occurrences or memories of the same person.)

I think there was a thread somewhere on the forum that dealt with developing Ne, and I'll try and find that before I have to surrender the modem again today. Ne is my favorite function, the one that provides variety and wonder in my life, and I like working on it and developing it to be stronger. I think eventually I might develop it to the point where I turn myself into a quasi-ENTP. (Which is going to present a problem for me, because I am definitely not an E. I'm actually an anti-E. I shall be an INTP with the function order of an ENTP. And I defy anyone to contradict me. :p)

edit: Found it.

I have a similar problem to sagewolf. I definitely think that my extroverted intuition is more developed than my introverted thinking, because I have had to develop it to deal with social circumstances. I'm willing to let introverted thinking take a backseat and act spontaneously.

I feel very energized by activity (and get bored easily if I cannot participate in activities) but drained heavily by social interaction. I'm definitely on the border.

Ne rivals Ti as my dominant function, but I can't really relate to the description in the OP.

...except that active Ne would seem to be a good way to synthesise empathy?

And I was exceptionally athletic... oh... a long time ago....

Now I just think Ne helps feed my paranoia. :D

Seconded. Teaching forces you to be very creative. It's a source of constant challenge to your creativity because everyone is different. I love the thrill I get from that part -- trying to dream up new ways to explain something very complicated on the spot.

@lor: yeah I worry about that too. I dream up the most unlikely scenarios behind what people do. I can't seem to stop doing it and my scenarios always seem very logical to me. I really have to make an effort to tell myself to not assume anything. I wish I didn't do that...

I'm getting there. People like me, I don't expect everything to be logical, and I wouldn't mind a close relationship with someone if I could ever find someone I could care to spare the time for.

However, I think the list overall is a load of bait. I think we all have that potential, but it goes beyond using Ne. It's just as tempting and idealistic as that hot dog in your avatar, sly guy.

I WANT ALL OF THAT

1 - well the ground doesn't literally break... but cannot leave your intuition behind when you think... it's the part of making new leaps in thought. Instead of dwelling over something over and over...

I consider myeslf quite aware of the sourroundings, and i find solutions in my enviroment, so maybe I could be a good athlete in theory :)

I've worked on communication, and it requires work in the area. Hmm... Intuition is part of keeping a conversation going. Its part of illustrating abstract concepts. suppose thinking doesn't illustrate an idea, but instead, it lays out the idea for you, alone. You need to make the leap to the other human mind explaining your idea. And the best way to get better at doing that, is simply seeing how many good ideas you can talk through to people, and see which response you find you get.

I personally hate when people think I don't want to utter their opinions back after I've said something. My ideas that may have crumbled once have less trust. Because it is sometimes regarded as an unquestionable truth that is static, and because my ideas could be flawed, or my position as a student is less than that of a teacher, my ideas can be questioned as incorrect or false.. simply because they come from me. The static truth that some people see is like an unhealthy trust to a fellow human being teacher, without any proper skepticism.. and thus, no work on really constrasting the teacher's ideas to anything else... as it's always right. It's bad..

I don't want people to follow anything I say without evaluating it first either way though - i don't want any followers. Not that i really have followers, i am not really a teacher like our high school teachers are... but still I get to be alittle bit of a teacher.. and yeah... etc etc

I just want some flowing of different ideas, and also about being a part of the humans in a significant way. So we share something that makes your thoughts have some merit. Sharing the same base sometimes makes you glad you are not totally on an alien path all alone.

I guess, you make new leaps from the same base. You might have 2 people branch out from the same base to different branches. You need some faith in the unknown, when nobody has been to your branch yet. Your left to figure out for yourself if that idea is worth anything. So suppose to grow is to have faith in growing into the unknown, or is it about recognising that the new branch shares traits with the older branches you already know?

Well, to define anything new, it has to have a feature unlike something old... you need to have an old trunk first... it's just about remembering that your part of the same tree....no matter how new something is....'

They understand the benefits of close relationships, and understand how to support and enhance these relationships.

This is true. but it's vague in what a relationship is. It's usually a relationship of exchanging ideas.. otherwise I do not have any interest in a relationship except when i sometimes need some child like comfort..or reassurance...this is basically my family or role models...

They see the value of principles that are not strictly logical:

well, ive not come across any principles that were not logical, if they were Ilogical I could improve them..

They have attractive and compelling personalities, and are well-liked and accepted by most people.

Pretty much what it says.

I don't share much details with people that i don't share ideas with. Because it seems like they don't need to know information on me. What will they need it for, since they are not discussing with me to gain a deeper understanding.

Generally ppl find my nature quite fun.... and interesting, and generally very few have things against me

I think the idea is simply that Ne can open an INTP to being willing to develop their inferior functions. (Fe, Se, etc...) I don't think anyone actually thinks Ne is going to serve as a cure-all. It just expands the mental horizons.

You're describing an ENTP.

An ENTP varies. Even though i know ENTPS that communicate rather well, there's those that seem quite uncomfortable still (High School) with their auxillary Ti. It's hard to make correct wording of the ideas.. but there is so many flowing around. It does fit pretty well though. It looks like a developed Ne but also depends on Ti in there....

i've noticed neither ENTP's or INTP's takes notes much...both using Ti-Ne... none of them really likes taking too much notes. There's just so much going on that writing it all down would be practising a skill that is really detrimental to the way that, atleast male ENTP's / INTP's, construct their thoughts and ideas in their mind. It would not be an especially good idea to stop exercising the mental map of concepts and ideas, that seems natural. Hmmmm
