Above is an image of Emma Watson, but this isn't a thread to post images of your favorite women in high heels (unless it comes to that). This is a thread to explain why men find high heels attractive on women. It is a persisting, popular and culturally-widespread fashion choice that has been around for hundreds of years. There must be a good explanation.

I wondered about this yesterday at lunch, and I came to a solid conclusion within a few minutes of thought.

I will tell you my explanation in a couple of days. First, I would like to test the quality of this explanation by seeing if any other intelligent person around here comes up with the same explanation independently.

After settling on my own conclusion, I thought to myself, "I bet the psychologists have already long settled at this same conclusion already." So, I went on the Internet in search of the scientifically-established explanation. But, I found no established explanation. I found a handful of diverse and strange explanations relating to culture and evolution.

In fact, there was, somewhat recently, a large study devoted to the topic:

"High heels and evolution: Natural selection, sexual selection and high heels," by E. O. Smith, published in Psychology, Evolution & Gender, 1999, found online at eosmith.com (PDF).

The study contains a plurality of explanations from qualified psychologists, and not one of those explanations is my own!

In order to find out if my own explanation is obvious or misguided, I would like to know your explanation. How do you explain the sexiness of high heels?

Heels make the butt and thighs look impressive. They improve posture. Also probably has something to do with confidence or whatever the doctors are calling it these days.

Maybe it's also evolutionarily founded in that a man wants a woman with good balance....

This stuff is good. You don't have to stop at just one explanation. Give me the best explanations that you can think of.

Can you explain the popularity of high heels? I don't want to be find high heels attractive. They are a problem for mobility, safety, and health. But, somehow, I do, and I am not alone. It is a fashion choice that has been persisting, popular, and culturally-widespread. See if you can explain that.

I imagine the biggest factor would be that heels accentuate the hip sway. Drawing attention to the hips/buttocks, flaunting the goodies as it were. Supposedly women with the 'ideal' waist-hip ratio sway their hips more when they walk. I imagine the idea is that men unconsciously associate an exaggerated sway with what the waist-hip ratio supposedly indicates, the health and reproductive status of the woman, making a woman with lots of sway more attractive. Whatever the reason men find the hip sway provocative, heels certainly enhance this.

It's also somewhat of a power symbol, or a symbolism of power, whichever makes more sense. As has been mentioned, heels give height and promote muscle tone and accentuate the buttocks. Heels require certain levels of confidence to wear competently, and can/often promote confidence. Perhaps this is associated with.. (goddamn, I had a word in my head but can't think of it now) ..a more liberal outlook, not being shy about what she wants and being more open to sex..?

I agree that high heels make the legs look good, but all I can picture when I think of them are the high school girls I see tottering around daily in hooker shoes. Oh, if only I could give one a little shove...it would be like dominoes...
Also, I sincerely doubt it's possible to walk quietly in heels on a hard surface. If it is possible, I've never seen it done. CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK

...Attractive. I'd rather wear flat shoes and be able to leave the room quietly. Or be able to, you know, run if something got ugly. You never know.

Total props to the ladies who can walk gracefully (and non-clackily) in heels though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handicap_principle :p

At least, that's what sprung to mind upon reading the above response. In some contexts I suppose they could be a symbol of wealth, because, seriously, it's impossible to perform any manual labour in those things. In that way it's just a method of flaunting status... Which could probably be said about a slew of popular painful foowear throughout history. Footbinding ---> High heels, same principle. Maybe.

I do think though that most of the appeal lies in the fact that they create nice aesthetic illusions, longer legs and whatnot.

Oh, and now that I'm thinking about it, I remember reading an article that claimed the popularity of high heels were an expression of this hidden male bondage fetish. Yeah.

I disagree with the argument that heels improve posture. Quite the opposite really.

Ballerina or fawn-like, it gives the impression of a graceful creature able to prance about on a seemingly impossible tiny foundation.

The spike has become symbolic of domineering...S&M B&D sorta stuff.

I also agree with the added height and leg/ass tone points.

I think too that it demonstrates physical prowess (good health/vigor/genes/fertility).

Same reasons youths around the globe dance to a fast beat.

IMO

They make the woman look as if she's arching her feet in orgasm? I believe I read this...somewhere. Anyway, this would be equivalent to showing cleavage, wearing enhancing bras, red lipstick, getting wet - all of which are recall some stage of sexual activity. (Cleavage/good bras = larger breasts, and breasts swell a little in arousal - I think this is the origin for the preference of larger breasts. As the human male's ability to detect ovulation through smell decreased, and the human female's readiness for sex increased [no estrous cycle but a monthly menstrual cycle], the female needed some way to signal sexual availability, and larger breasts would have been selected for over time - not because they were inherently sexual, but because they recalled a stage of arousal, which worked out more or less the same.)

Bondage works too. :D Actually, I think part of it (aside from the butt/leg enhancement and the sway) is definitely to do with the exaggeration of sex differences. In high heels the woman is made weaker and more vulnerable, and in comparison the man feels stronger and his natural urge to protect (or not compete with as an equal) the woman is satisfied through circumstance. Basically, the woman's (contrived) weakness sets the man's comparative strength in stronger relief, and as we all know from porn - exaggeration is an aphrodisiac. Anything that emphasises the sex difference enhances the potential for attraction.

I think this is why a lot of men tend to prefer 'feminine-looking' women (weaker ones who are less overtly muscular), feel uncomfortable with having women take charge, like to feel stronger/superior etc, and vice-versa - a lot of women tend to prefer stronger men, 'masculine' men (taller and bigger - muscle is preferable but I've heard a lot express the desire for general bigness of bone/fat if that's what it takes), men who take charge even if the women themselves are very independent and bossy, etc. The men feel their strength more keenly when set against women's weakness, which validates both their ego and their choice in partner. The women feel the man's strength directly - and in a weird convoluted twist often prefer to (subconsciously? consciously?) weaken themselves in order to emphasise that difference, which gives them enhanced appreciation of the partner and the attraction in general. Though sometimes this is limited only to the bedroom which leads to difficulties outside as the man continues to assert his sex-difference (ie dominance) and the woman rejects it, thereby setting off the 'women don't know what they want' chain of thought, and the 'men are chauvinist pigs' chain of gossip.

I'm wondering if the man tends to push dominance/strength/weakness-from-her because the sex drive tends to be higher? Making more or all interactions a stage for sexual exaggeration. If a large part of the attraction is sexual rather than personal then the space for personal expression disappears. Because gender roles (stemming partly from sex exaggeration, stemming from sexual competition) are all tied up in culture though, it's impossible to untangle.

Anyway, I think high heels are feminine markers through widening the strength gap, which makes them sexual advertisement. Just like giggling, floppy limbs (all the high school girls fall about my shopping centre in droves - very annoying), knock-kneed walking, slowness of movement, fear of 'bulking up', etc.

I don't really find high heels super attractive. The women wearing them tend to come over as dominant, arrogant and/or mean. I guess it makes the legs and buttocks look good, though.

holy shit i've always wanted to see emma watson's nipple...or is it an illusion

high heels? i don't know. if they wanna walk around tiptoed like that while assuming it makes them more attractive, whatever floats their boat. the only immediate point i would notice it making is for the girl to be "wearing" a little extra height- like if a short girl wanted to look a little taller, it would be like "oh, you're wearing tall today. fun to switch things up, isn't it"

I don't know. I like the sound they make when I wear them, sounds like I'm walking into a board meeting. But I hate wearing them, very rarely do.
The more optimistic me says it is because the calves look better.
The more pessemistic me says it's because a woman wearing stupid heels is more likely to be compliant. She wears uncomfortable shoes to fit in for f's sake. What wouldn't she do?
It makes me more optimistic of humankind when the answers from men seem to be 'she is more powerful' rather than my assumption that she is more compliant.

The thinking me says Cheese is talking more sense than I.

The thing is, it could be any number of reasons. If you're explaining it based on an association with something not contained in the image itself, then that is a personal thing, and relies on affirming someone's personal opinion. To some it may be a sign of female strength, to others a sign of female weakness - but the actual fundamental aesthetic, and real reason it is seen as sexy, is the same.

The women wearing them tend to come over as dominant, arrogant and/or mean.

high heels were apparently designed (by men) to push both a woman's boobies and ass out to center stage.

so i'm guessing it's that.

Looking at the origin it was used by kings and queens(sometimes for practical purposes, but I presume that is not relevant to the question here). And the shoe itself is that of an elevated position. The visual aesthetic is I guess created by the more powering royalty aspect that humans tends to strive for.

Perhaps it gives a taste of Godliness?

Double standard. Women can dress in heels, lipstick and pushup bras and get a job as a lawyer, manager or banker.

What if men started wearing codpieces?

Just sayin'.

To be honest, I can't really tell the difference between when someone is wearing high heals and when someone isn't. If I can actually see that they're wearing high heals, I instantly lose a bit of respect for the person - to put that kind of strain on the body and wear something that absurdly impractical for whatever marginal benefit it gives to ones looks just screams of shallowness and/or self-image issues.

So, I can't really answer the question. What I would say, though, is that women probably don't wear high heals as much for men as they do for themselves (for the reasons I listed above) because they project their own judgment of themselves, thinking that others (men and women) judge them the same way they do themselves, therefore they must 'impress' everyone.

It's a sign of feminineness hence attractive to guys. I don't get why you would look further as the answer is so closely linked to culture that it is impossible to make a subjective judgement as you are apart of the culture

Abe explains the popularity of high heels

The explanations were very many. None of those explanations were my own, though some came close. It is discouraging, because I thought that my own explanation would prove at least somewhat obvious to an intelligent thinker. I will now finally give the details of my own explanation.

Basically, the act of a woman standing on her toes sends a signal of sexual availability to men. If this doesn't make sense, then I think it is best illustrated in the following figure, adapted from the plaque designed by Carl Sagan and send into deep space by NASA aboard Voyager 10 and 11, meant to represent to foreign intelligent life a typical human male and a typical human female.

highheelexplanationdiag.png

This is not meant to be scientific evidence. It illustrates what we already know from everyday life. While standing, a woman's vagina is typically a few inches below the base of a man's penis, and a woman's lips are likewise a few inches below a man's lips. This means that a primitive naked woman would be inclined through pragmatism to stand on her toes if she wanted to kiss or copulate with a man. The genes of any primitive naked man who effectively perceives this message of sexual availability would have a distinct evolutionary advantage, and the descendents of such men would tend to perceive a sexual invitation (if only on a subconscious level) any time a woman stands on her toes.

dep_2961304-Standing-on-her-toes.jpg

High-heeled shoes tend to provide the illusion of a woman standing on her toes.

The most popular form of high-heeled shoes have stiletto heels, where the heels are long and thin.

rhinestone-strap-stilettos-prom-shoes-sexy-high-heel-shoes-zaphonshoescom-clip.jpg

The long and thin heels maximize the illusion of woman being supported by only her toes. It is a way for a woman to constantly send out signals of sexuality.

I believe that this hypothesis plausibly and powerfully explains very much of the existing data, including:
  • The widespread popularity of high heels persisting for hundreds of years...
  • ...despite the pain and disability they incur on women.
  • The strong tendency of strippers, prostitutes, working women, and women on dates to wear high heels.
  • The strong tendency of high-heeled shoes to be stilettos.
  • The strong tendency of high-heeled shoes to have low toes.
  • The (questionable?) tendency of high-heeled shoes to lose their appeal while a woman is not in a standing position.
  • The (questionable?) tendency of high-heeled shoes to lose their appealing power while the shoes are covered up with long pants.
I believe that the many other explanations do not have nearly the same level of power. They explain only a minority of the relevant data. They do not plausibly fit the data. They impose ad hoc rules of attractiveness that we did not believe or expect before.

So, what do you think? Since nobody else came up with this explanation, does that mean I am delusional? Or does it mean I am an intellectual pioneer?

its multiple things working in synergy together:

1 an average height woman needs to stand on her toes to kiss an average height man (although that does not hold if they lay down)
2 a girl standing on her toes does also show a kind of girlish excitement. (also: a man standing on his toes out of excitement would look super gay).
3 when a human stands on its toes , it improves posture (as in getting ready for powerful action > sex) (although some might say it is bad posture, it is only bad if you walk long term like that, but for short powerful action it is good posture).
4 it shows more leg muscles, they stick out more, they are more toned
my addittion:
5 a woman on extreme high heels, so high she cant even walk, makes it all the more attractive, more a sex-object, it's attractive to see her struggle....it shows that all she is good for is sex, she's good for nothing else. so conclusion of that: she is probably very good in sex. how else could she still be able to survive? (her specialization must pay the bills.)

just like somebody here said that kings and queens used to wear high heels, to show off that they dont have to work, they can just parade around, they have a different specialization in life to provide for themselves

it is also something like crazy over-sized silicon lips... they are ugly as hell but still very attractive for sucking cock ;). it shows you that she neglected everything in life to become a specialist in sucking cock. and that is her specialization in life, the way she provides for herself. she is able to survive, even though she has ugly lips. she does live and provide for herself, so she must be very good at it. thats what she shows with the big lips. thats my thoughts at least ;) could be me

  5. WTF?
They synergize to make: WWWWWTTTTTFFFFF?????

Interesting Ideas.

However, for future reference the art work was by Carl Sagan's 2nd. of three wives: Linda.

And the plaques were aboard the Pioneers 10 & 11

The Voyagers 1 & 2 had the LP Disk recordings. (Carl Sagan published a thick book with all the images and transcripts of all the voice messages called: Murmurs of Earth)

Wearing heels conveys a sense of higher social status, and thus higher desirability. The sharpness of the heel plays a part.

There is no explanatory power there. Conceivably, almost any sort of shoe geometry could do the same thing. And, who says men care so much for a woman's higher social status? My explanation is better.

This is not meant to be scientific evidence. It illustrates what we already know from everyday life. While standing, a woman's vagina is typically a few inches below the base of a man's penis, and a woman's lips are likewise a few inches below a man's lips. The genes of any primitive naked man who effectively perceives this message of sexual availability would have a distinct evolutionary advantage, and the descendents of such men would tend to perceive a sexual invitation (if only on a subconscious level) any time a woman stands on her toes.

This offers the same explanatory power that others have supplied: mainly that it's a sort of behavioral sexual selection. Whether the raised heals of a woman causes her to "present" by protruding the breasts and ass or by heightening her lips and vagina requires a conscious distinction, not an instinctual one.

Also, where your explanation is weaker is that it assumes that women must be shorter than men, whereas the former explanation can work for women of any height. Even if women are typically shorter, it doesn't hold as much explanatory power, because all women have breasts (of some size) and all have an ass that indicates the 'child bearing hips' - high heals tend to extenuate these features.

High-heeled shoes tend to provide the illusion of a woman standing on her toes.

It's not an illusion. They actually are standing on their toes.

The most popular form of high-heeled shoes have stiletto heels, where the heels are long and thin.

The long and thin heels maximize the illusion of woman being supported by only her toes. It is a way for a woman to constantly send out signals of sexuality.

I would say style trends and not having large, bulky heals sticking off the shoes would be a better explanation.

I believe that the many other explanations do not have nearly the same level of power. They explain only a minority of the relevant data. They do not plausibly fit the data. They impose ad hoc rules of attractiveness that we did not believe or expect before.

A few problems:

High heeled shoes were not always specifically for women.
Modern high heals were invented for high class society, suggesting they were used as a status symbol.
High heels are not ubiquitous throughout every culture.

Here is another slightly related but interesting question: why do people (of both sexes) tend to prefer the look of a circumcised penis?

Re: Abe explains the popularity of high heels

You have the toughest criticisms, Agent Intellect, and I will see how long I can hold my ground.
This offers the same explanatory power that others have supplied: mainly that it's a sort of behavioral sexual selection. Whether the raised heals of a woman causes her to "present" by protruding the breasts and ass or by heightening her lips and vagina requires a conscious distinction, not an instinctual one.
A hypothesis with the most explanatory power is the hypothesis that most expects the given evidence to be existent given the truth of the hypothesis. The point of evidence that I think makes my hypothesis especially strong is the preponderance of stiletto heels among women--not just high heels, but long and thin heels. Only my own hypothesis strongly expects this evidence.
I think that is a slight relative weakness, not a large weakness. We would very strongly expect almost all men within a single tribal society to be taller than the women in the same society. On that note, we know as an established scientific fact that women generally love taller men (I can provide the study if you need it).

On the other hand, I am not convinced that high heels are the most efficient way to protrude the breasts and buttocks. It can be done through a mere act of will with the feet flat.
It's not an illusion. They actually are standing on their toes.
That's right, though the essential point is that the illusion is that the women are being supported by only their toes, which mimics the primitive act of sexual invitation.
I would say style trends and not having large, bulky heals sticking off the shoes would be a better explanation.
High heeled shoes were not always specifically for women.
The bulky heels would actually be much preferred, if that were equal in its sexual signal. The thin heels are a big problem: they sink, they fall to one side and cause the ankle to twist, they get stuck in holes, they easily catch on whatever is on the ground, and they greatly impede mobility. Whenever men have ever worn high heels, it is always with a bulky heel. Women have bulky heels only a minority of the time, because, per my hypothesis, the bulky heels destroy the illusion.
Modern high heals were invented for high class society, suggesting they were used as a status symbol.
Almost all innovations are initiated by the rich, but I don't think that beginnings are nearly as relevant as their persisting popularity. Anyone who has lived in the western world in the last 100 years could afford a pair of stiletto high heels, whether cheep or expensive brands. The rich very often move on to other status symbols, but high heels have persisted among all classes.
High heels are not ubiquitous throughout every culture.
Yes, but they are very widespread. Not every culture is expected to adopt an arbitrary western fashion choice, but stiletto high heels for women are found in every culture--they are not just existent but popular. Wherever you find paved streets, you find women wearing stiletto high heels.
Here is another slightly related but interesting question: why do people (of both sexes) tend to prefer the look of a circumcised penis?
I have no idea. :)

Heels are an SJ thing and a cultural/social thing. It wasn't long ago that flats were trendy; they may still be considered trendy ( I don't know).

I like a good heel and do wear stilettos from time to time. I also have a below average height for a woman.

There is no explanatory power there. Conceivably, almost any sort of shoe geometry could do the same thing. And, who says men care so much for a woman's higher social status? My explanation is better.
No, not any shoe geometry could do the same thing.

Men of higher desirability will look for women considered to be of higher desirability, consciously or not. Women want to move to the top of this status ladder, and if they can pull of heels effectively, this certainly helps.

Of course, the direct sexual attractiveness due to changing the body shape to be more typically feminine/unmasculine is a significant part - and increases sexual appeal in a way not considered "slutty".

Heels may well suggest an increased interest in sex, while simultaneously increasing the quality of the male being attracted - increased desirability, decreased attainability.

I'll again mention that it's not just the increase in height, but the reaction to the sharpness of the heel. It's probably a phallic thing (lolfreud).

I agree... Lol. I just think they look pretty. I used to whine about wearing them when my mom made me dress up at times, and I still hate dressing up.

I have to admit though, I dont know the purpose of heels, but when I do wear them, legs feel pretty stretched out, and erm.. I'm usually quite alert with heels on lol.. :phear:
