It is an irrational disorder.

I have social anxiety issues, too. I see it as basically a kind of self-censorship. I feel like it must have been a survival mechanism for me at one time, but that's just a theory. It definitely keeps me from hitting the gym, which is like, three blocks away, and for which I just forked over $400.

Lots of good ideas for upping serotonin and dopamine levels listed here...Over the last year, I've finally deduced and adopted the idea that lifting heavy weights, as well as adding some decent cardio to the mix, has transformed me from a reclusive, drug-abusing cynical prick to a healthy, socially-adept prick, with a somewhat positive outlook on life...

I was in a way bad way for a very long time...The weights saved a brother...My brain chemicals musta been so outta whack from all the drugs and inactivity that all I could conjure was negativity and suicidal ideation...A weekly exercise regime that leaves you fatigued and your muscles sore is certain to c

hange your brain chemistry over the long haul...Add to that at least a single, twenty minute 'Meditation' session per day, and you are on track to reconfiguring your brain chemisty...permanently.

I do side with and thorougly empathize with those members who suffer with social anxiety...This one thing by itself has been such a huge impediment to my overall happiness and success in life...That, and a varying level of OCD.

I do think that a single Benzo added to the diet can be the difference between one who participates in life and is comfortable/content with the social context of a neighborhood Gym, or the uneasy cat who has to 'make due' exercising in his Mom's garage with some busted up free-weights passed down from Uncle Buck. Drugs are sometimes good, M'kay.

I have a very off and on again relationship with exercise. I have always been active and most of my jobs were very physically demanding. I tended to seek out the most physically demanding of the tasks wherever I worked because it meant I could avoid most of the people.

So, I stacked 5 lb bags of potatoes 6 feet high on pallets every summer during university. If you don't think that's very impressive try doing it 40 hours a week for 3 months and you'll have a very toned upper body. (It helps that I'm female.)

When I worked at a bookstore for 4 years I did all the clambering up ladders while awkwardly carrying as many heavy books as possible in one hand. I also broke down pallets of 50 lbs boxes of books and pushed around 300 lbs carts filled with books. Bookstores/Libraries can be much more physically demanding than a lot of people think.

Anyway, now I have a desk job and I am literally chained to a desk 40 hours a week. So I get up at 5am and go running for 30 minutes most days. In the afternoon after work I try to do at least 20 minutes of core and upper body work.

It keeps me sane.

Edit: I loathe gyms and exercise classes. I hate working out with people. I keep the boredom away when running by listening to audio books or music.

I do cardio and weightlifting 5-6 days per week, depending on which program I'm on. I mostly run and bicycle but I also do some swimming. I love the elliptical. I also hike and ride horses (dressage & hunt seat) as often as I can. I do a lot of stretching and Hatha Yoga every day. I love to dance.

I am a very different person when I don't exercise. I had to stop for a while after a car accident and I did not like that person. At. All.

I think its kinda boring, especially going to the gym... its so dead.

I'd rather dance and have fun while getting a bit more fit or do martial arts, play sports...

I generally avoid doing tiring things. I don't like getting tired. I like biking but only if I have a destination. Anyway, I don't have a bike, so I either walk or take the subway. Now, I recently moved in with some people, and they sometimes take me with them to the river. I like swimming, but I don't go by myself because I get panic attacks when I'm in the water and realize I can't feel the floor with my feet, so I just swim a little and float by the shore or something. I don't like most sports either; I find handball fun to watch but the constant fear of being hit with such a hard ball keeps me from playing it. Or whatever sports involving putting projectiles in nets. I like archery and horseback riding but they are too expensive.

I offset the little exercise I get with an adequate consumption of nutrients. If I'm not moving much, I don't eat much (I eat a lot either way). Except when someone brings sweets home. I just can't resist sweets. I still remain very skinny, perhaps because I'm a vegetarian, or because I play an instrument that needs to be played while standing. Sometimes I wish I played the cello or something.

/\/\/\______A handball to the face or body doesn't, absolutely can not hurt...Get out there and up that heart rate, friend...No excuses...A great variation of raquetball can even be played on an outdoor handball court...You play with regular raquets, but with handball rules... LOTS of old school, hardcore fun to be had...and plenty of calories shed...Much more than traditional handball.

Perhaps a ball to the face cannot do harm to one's body, but it is certainly very unpleasant, and I don't like unpleasant things. For the record, I just went biking today, and now my whole body hurts. I wont get up from bed in 5 days. I didn't go viking, that probably would have added to my current pain.

As of now I'm debating on whether I should or not take cello as a second instrument. I don't have the money to afford it either but might be cool. It also doesn't have much to do with exercising, I suppose, more so when it is an instrument you play sitting. That's not to say cellists can't break a sweat when playing. It's amazing when you can hear them breathing, imo it adds to the performance, at least when it's not a recording.
