Anyone else love this book? I love the simple writing style used, akin to Isaac Asimov.

My first favorite sci-fi book. Should have stopped soon after that though. I guess the Ender books were okay but the Bean books didn't need to be written in my view. Card has an easy to read writing style. Interesting that it comes from such a crazy ass mind.

I really, really empathized with Ender when I read it... a some years ago. I think I read it in 9th or 10th grade, and I felt like I would have utterly been carried away by it had I been younger...

One quote from Ender's game has resonated for me my entire life...

"Humanity does not ask us to be happy. It merely asks us to be brilliant on its behalf."

Every time that thought comes again, it makes me pause and think... "Is that it? Is that what this is about?" I've been stewing about starting a thread to discuss that quote alone...

P.S. It's a shame that Orson Scott Card seems to be going insane as he gets older... (insane in the self-righteous, radical christian sense.)

I read Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide before my first exposure to Card's unhingedness. I have to say it was quite a blow to me. Part of me expected to find an author I could identify with and found the complete opposite. Depressing :( He's a huge Firefly fan too... what is trying to do to me?!?

Its been a while since then, so I can honestly say I objectively love the books of his that I've read. Great concepts, but oddly enough even some of the moral issues he brings up in his books seem to be concepts he can't wrap his head around in real life. He is an enigma.

I loved that book when I read it. Haven't read any of the rest of the series. But that one was definitely good.

Holy crap!

However, I do kind of admire him for this. He knows that the dogmatic aspects of politics and religion need to stay out of the literary world. I only read (chronologically) up to "Shadow Puppets" though.

I read that book for a Science Fiction class I took last year. I think having discussions on books as you read helps you see themes you normally wouldn't (sooner than you would at least). I would have thought "Pretty good book" but thanks to the discussions I thought "amazing book".

I can see Ender's Game making a really good (and violent) in-class debate on morality. I wouldn't know though. We had to read "The Time Traveler's Wife" in my sci-fi class :(.

Enders Game was very good, and had many lessons which hold true for promising military commanders. I actually did my Thesis paper on that novel (with a few others) and the value of science fiction to military leaders in lessons learned about ethics, leadership and military values.

I read that book years ago and I'd completely forgotten about it, but it is a great and original book

I cried like a baby over what they did to Ender. The manipulation, torture, and pressure really made me feel ill. My friend encouraged me to read it but all he could talk about were the political aspects rather than the psychological and philosophical ones..

I don't know how to word it(haven't read the book in years), but the recurring theme of Ender fully understanding(/loving) something and doing so crushes/kills it was heartbreaking. I don't know if that makes sense.

I agree. I didn't remember how sad it was until i read it the second time. Throughout the book you never really see Ender 100% happy, and that's a bit strange.

i read the entire series back in 6th grade as a recommendation from my english teacher, he had only recommended Ender's Game, but i ended up reading them all, own the entire series, then sophomore year i had to read it again, it was a good book, but it was boring the second time through since i already knew what was happening, but i felt obligated to read the whole series over again, i enjoyed them all equally, although talking about it now, i associated myself much more with Bean when i read them 2 years ago, where i would see myself much more as Ender now

Shit, somehow I missed that quote. That IS poignant. *Puts it in my word document of important quotes*

Ender's game is fantastic, as are most of Card's books. I read Ender's game a long time ago, I think the last time I read it was early high school (so 6-7 years ago). I want to re-read the Speaker for the Dead triology, I think it might have more gems for me now. (That triology was read out-loud to me in middle school. Yes... my parents read out-loud to me and my brother when I was still in middle school.)

Really loved Enders game and Enders Shadow. Enders Shadow was probably the best. Bean was more influential to me than Ender. The rest of the books weren't bad, though it alittle amateur.

Agreed 100%.
I like most of Card's other books, Especially Treason. Mainly because of his writing style, and the interesting settings/plotlines.

Side note: Card often takes a lot of themes from the Book of Mormon his homecoming series for instance is very similar to the BOM story-wise.

heh... i just picked up the book today from the library.. have never read it. i am very biased against things that have great appraisal/fanboyersim(of certain levels) but im 24 pages into it.. and.. ... .. i cant find a reason to hate it.. i .. actually.. am.. liking it.

i must say, i greatly prefer simple writing style/simple english to be more elegant than people who feel the need to seem smart while writing..
