Do you dress for your age? You think people should?

I just saw a video on yahoo bout some show forcing this woman to dress for her age and I dont know.

And yeah, we are talking about in a casual setting where its really free for all.

I think I know which episode you mean, I saw that clip too.

I think if you can carry it off, then wear it. But there are a lot of people who wear clothes that they cannot pull off, so to speak. I have ONE friend in her 60's who looks like she's in her late 30's or early 40's, so she can pull artsy clothes with short skirts, fun stockings, etc. But the vast majority of women her age cannot. (My mom is 69, and there is no WAY she could wear that stuff; she actually has to dress her age, unfortunately, based on her personality.)

I can wear clothes for the 25-30 range, I don't dress my age; but people think I'm typically 30, so it works for me. I can't go younger than that, I look goofy.

im not so young anymore and i will admit i feel a bit of insecurity seeing others wear similar clothes but can pull it off better hahaha, especially those teenagers who are like stick thin. but i dunno, i see others like me too who as some would classify as murders the dress but they still do it.

Well, honestly, if you're happy and want to dress however, then go for it. Even if it looks bad and you know people will criticize, it's still one's choice to dress and act however, so if you're happy and can live with the results...

Do you dress for your age? You think people should?

What is 'dressing for one's age'? What clothes are for each age? Who determines that?

(in dark colors)
Hoody, hat

Shirt
Jeans
Boots

good to go.

Are we talking clothing trends?

Dressing for shock value is one thing. Dressing childishly smacks of insecurity.

Personally, I think EyeSeeCold is stealing my clothes. (Except my underwear.)

I honestly couldn't tell you what people my age stereotypically wear. I guess it's possible this applies to women more than men.

I saw a lot of people in the pub the other day wearing caps backward. I always identified this with a 10-15 yo age group but apparently that's changed. My wardrobe consists of whatever was cheap at the time, I don't like dressing stupid but I'm not too bothered when I have to.

@Cavallier
I'm not sure about the insecurity thing. Isn't dressing for shock value fundamentally attention seeking? If people dress non-conformative to their age group wouldn't that be a sign of low self-monitoring and therefor low insecurity? I'm just throwing around ideas.

The costuming thing works if it works. Like anything else, you can pull off the "impression" or you can't. And the goal of the exercise matters. I'd not be taken seriously showing up at a client's business dressed like Tinkerbelle. On the other hand, I'd be a big hit at a costume party, for the simple incongruity of it. The real awkwardness comes in when people seem to be really trying to adopt a persona that is manifestly implausible. That makes others watching it either uncomfortable, indignant, or sarcastic.

Developing a good taste in fashion takes an effort. It's like anything else, you can't develop a good taste in music over night either.

If you have never been the "fashion type", then I would suggest that you actively look for some inspiration. And not just random inspiration, you need to look for an actual person your age and size that you think looks cool or "normal" and copy them.

Fake it till you make it.

And yes I think people should dress according to their age unless they look like Mick Jagger.

I'm going to try to stop wearing hoodies all the time.

It freaks me out when people twice my age wear 'skater d00d' clothes.

I wear what I want, much to the disdain of my parents. I don't give a shit what others think of me inthe first place, so what they think of my attire is even less a concern

In your forties the choices are reduced to: frumpy, I've-given-up soccer mom or trying-too-hard "I'm middle-aged and I'm HOT!" trendy, tacky crap. If you prefer a classic, elegant look your clothing options lean dangerously close to boring but I prefer that to the other two.

It's never quite as good when someone won't go the extra mile. What is underwear, among friends?

I'm fortyish, and fully cognizant of the fact that I dress exactly as I did in my late 20's...But, isn't 40 just an aged version of your late 20's self?...You've fully matured and ripened in your physical and mental attributes by the time your late 20's hits, and whoever you find yourself to be at that particular age is who you'll be for the remainder of middle age...Or, perhaps it is possible that this particular INTP is just emotionally stunted somewhere around 28 years of age...Seriously possible.

I found my personal style back during the grunge era...Barring any impending court date or funeral, my daily uniform consists of a pair of knee-length shorts and some type of torso-snugging tee-shirt...Kohl's brand (Apt. 9) makes a form-fitting shirt that accentuates my broad, muscular shoulders and rippling bis and tris...Gotta flaunt what momma nature and the local gym has imbued ya with, right?...Colors are always of the 'muted' variety...Mostly sticking with what the ladies call, 'earth tones'...Lots of greys, dark greens, brown, etc...Never a united-colors-of-Benetton dude. Bright colors hurt my eyes and offend my senses...

Lost around 55 pounds over the last year or so, feeling much healthier and looking loads better for the effort, and this apparently naturally lends itself to a more positive and adventurous outlook...I just scored myself a light purple and light blue shirt, courtesty of the Marc Anthony company...Sharp...And, in turn, because of my conscientous effort to dress better, I've started to garner the attention of young, vivacious, fertile women...After a false start with one fellow gym attendee, I've started a budding romance with yet another...She's twelve years younger...We'll see.

I'm not really concerned about fashion. Once or twice I tried to get into it and define a look for myself, but I couldn't find anything that worked. Finally settled on Dockers and solid color t-shirts. I don't have shoes that I really like, I just use sneakers. I also wear a black fleece vest every day, I feel much more comfortable with it. I like my arms free, but the extra padding on the chest keeps me warm and is psychologically comfortable.

I'm an ectomorph, 6 4 and 160 lbs, so I do have to get boys shirts as only they fit. Guys my age are usually fat assholes so they make the shirts for fatties too.

Larry David is an INTP, see how he dresses (much like I do, with a coat instead of a vest)

He's had those glasses frames for decades, just keeps getting the glass replaced.
