Down with Yahoo

I've not actually used yahoo for quite long, except for yahoo mail. Have also been using chrome instead of konqueror.

So today when I decided to revert to konqui just for the lulz (well after all I wanted to try it out having recently installed Kubuntu Lucid Lynx), I got this from Yahoo:

It's a completely hopeless version, far worse than the old Yahoo (konqui users, please try if you haven't). And when I change browser identification, Yahoo still borks (no pics).

Kudos to Yahoo for discriminating against the rest of us who use less commonplace browsers (not forgetting that Safari was based on KHTML). Facebook and even Hotmail work fine in Konqui. Considering that Konqui is the default browser for KDE, it's alienating a lot of linux users, never mind that we can use firefox. Irritatingly too, Yahoo still displays the "Yahoo mail has not been tested on your operating system" message when I open it in Firefox.

Well, Yahoo is a profit-oriented company and apparently they don't bother about Konqui because the target group is not relevant enough. However, you could write an email to Yahoo and complain about it because no company in the world wants to have bad PR.

I find it difficult to use Konqueror, not merely because I adore Firefox to the point of madness and have so customized it with extensions --- there's even an extension to list and print out extensions --- that it has become a finely-honed battletank ( OK, a King Tiger if you insist on looking at it's footprint ), but since I use Konqueror as default file manager and I don't want 300 pages ( 'open last session' ) revealed everytime I start it up; however, I severely despise any site that discriminates against any browser ( except IE --- IE should be wiped from the earth ). If people don't use a wide variety of competing browsers how is the darwinian competition to improve browsers going to take place ? Microsoft took 5 - 6 years to improve upon IE6...


I've always found Konqueror an excellent browser; sadly, although I prefer it to Dolphin as a manager --- tree-view --- OpenSUSE 12 downgraded it as a manager, putting it under Internet/Web Browser and not under System/File Manager as well, and denying it super-user mode, forcing one on to Dolphin for that use. Yahoo must be doing this deliberately since I can't think of anything they offer that even the weirder sadder little browsers can't handle.

Strongly agreed. Yet everybody works around its non-standards-compliant "standards". Bah.

And I loathe dolphin, which reminds me of Win 3.1. I really like the combined file manager/web browser/ftp client thing (which is one of the few things I liked in Win98 IE 4, but unfortunately M$ has gotten rid of that). But Kubuntu has also like OpenSuse started using dolphin as default and some things just no longer work as well in konqui.

Anyway, I think I will switch to Kmail to check my yahoo mail. I don't usually like email clients and prefer webmail. But now that they've overloaded webmails to the point that they start to look like email clients, I might as well use a proper email client.

EDIT: It seems POP/IMAP would only work with "Yahoo Mail Plus". Grr.
