I don't watch tv, it kills the independent mind, I work on reducing the time I spend on youtube and other (tv like content produced) media, they too kill the mind and waste time.

I've successfully managed to avoid anything related to "Pewdiepie" for years.

He's a very sad meme-phenomenon of an average cheerful and laid back male that many can relate to and can waste hours enjoying, in search for the substitute fix to their personal situation.

Find a happy person, make a brand out of it and there will be a flock of needy feeding of it. Pretty similar to finding a guru or again; watching tv among other things. (Extensively watching someone else do something for 'entertainment', gameplay, sports, ugh, this is devolution in essence imo).

I find S dominants most likely to need television. With the ones around me it provides a connection for them which is very important. Therefore TV conforms largely to the S psyche, which means it doesn't provide content for the N psyche. For us the internet is nearly perfect, it allows us to interact with the collective in a more nuanced and individualized way.

For entertainment I've become a great fan of movies however and have a custom theater installed in my house for that. It's become part of my sons education; now he only likes watching movies that are in black and white.

I don't actually watch on a television with scheduled commercials and all that, but yes I watch the shit out of TV shows. I like experiencing stories and analyzing storytelling as a general concept. What makes it good? What makes it bad? How would I have made this story? Would my way have been better or worse? Do these characters accomplish their purpose? If they don't, is it the fault of the actor, the writer, or both? etc.

I started writing responses to all the other posts in the thread but I decided to delete them, as it came off a little as me being slightly belligerent and also misrepresented my actual opinions about television. I totally understand (and, in some cases, agree with) all of the complaints above.

A lot of TV shows (especially the popular, mainstream ones) are really fucking dumb and can be painful to watch. But to blame that on television itself is a bit misguided, I think. There are dumb movies. Dumb books. Dumb songs. Any element of pop culture is going to have some really dumb stuff, that's just the way it goes.

I personally find value in TV shows. Hell, even the bad ones have value (except The Big Bang Theory. Fuck that steaming pile of shit). As I mentioned above, I like analyzing the things that work and the things that don't. I like the stories. I enjoy finding characters that I connect to. The really good ones even teach me things about myself that I hadn't realized.

To be honest, I find it really strange to talk about shows as if they're separate or different from movies (or even books, to be honest).

Come to think of it all the shows I enjoy watching are usually specially made shows. Not typical fill in the time slot shows. Though I do like South Park and sometimes the Simpsons and Futurama are really witty in their satire. Though I've started to like more television shows, since the politics of work exhausts me mentally; I've gotten to the point where I'd rather watch someone else on youtube play some video games, instead of playing myself.

I don't have a television, but I do acquire and watch the occasional TV show. Though, it's not like it matters as I waste a lot of time on brain dead places on ze net. I wouldn't have the mental stamina to make every minute of the day a productive one.

Having grown up with a television, there are definitely situations where it comes with a pleasant atmosphere and where the commercial breaks are even part of that nostalgic feel. So when I'm visiting someone, it can be a nice experience watching an hour or two of telly and the particular feel that comes along with it.

And lastly, I find that even with some crappy TV, there's still some fascination in analyzing the participants, how it's set up and how it tries to draw a crowd. If it has actors, I try to see what the actor thinks about the role it's playing, which feelings the creators are trying to create in viewers (which also tends to reveal something more intimate about the creators and what they consider to be feel awakening). It was relatively informative. Which you seem to have judged based on its title. That or it might be your joke.

I own a TV. We buy Netflix a couple months a year with plans to watch all kinds of things, but we rarely get around to it. I don't YouTube. I just don't like people that much, and most videos feel like the social/emotional equivalent to having a random person screaming in my face about whatever. I don't like music videos either. They detract from the music. I will use YouTube, though, to play cartoons at work when someone hands me a random baby. It sits in my lap watching Donald Duck cartoons, and I do my paperwork one-handed.

Edit: I will never forgive any of you for bringing PewDiePie to my attention. This is almost as bad as the Honey BooBoo thing you people alerted me to a while back. You're all going to hell.

i see lots of "black and white film blogs" on tumblr and i honestly dont see how these differ from "pale" blogs or whatever. point is, color would only matter so much if watching a film nothing more than a visual trip for you...but given the subject matter of this thread, its fair to assume that this isnt what youre getting at

i was going to say that your preference for monochromatic films suggests euro-centric tastes...but even that wouldnt be true nor fair given the abundance of quality films in color that dont get enough attention like films from the czech new wave and yoguslav cinema...and films by directors like manoel de oliveira, harun farocki, theodoros angelopoulos, pier paolo pasolini and sharunas bartas(to name a few).

what you said bothers me because a lot of people seem to have a similar mentality with regard to film quality. its the reason why films by african and asian directors produced every year get little to no attention, and this neglect is always attributed to vacant excuses like limited distribution and language barriers...when these things should no longer be an issue because internet and criterion collection.
what im trying to say is that there's a whole world of cinema beyond the scope of the stuff that gets attention. a rich world that has a lot to offer but is sadly neglected. if you were to spelunk a little bit, you would find lots of forsaken directors and forsaken film cultures that have produced gems(films by directors like edward yang, tsai mig liang, abderrahmane sissako, jian wen, kon ichikawa etc.) that easily stand next to and even trump "giants of cinema" like orson welles and stanley kubrick

yeah, that's the thing -- I think there is a difference between watching a show as a thoughtless consumer just trying to pass the time, and watching something with a critical/artistic eye as to better understand the content as well as the delivery of it. I don't deal well with fluff, usually I'm watching something to analyze the content, learn something, or understand how it was done.

I consider TV to be just another medium. I do think for a long time TV was aimed at the lowest common denominator in general and wasn't much use except as mental junk food. But I think that has changed drastically especially in the last ten years or so, and every so often before then there were shows with more substance. You can even offer more character development in a TV series if the episodes are not simply one-shot encapsulations -- i.e., if you actually have a long running plotline where the characters grow and change. Movies, you're usually stuck in the 90-150 minute mark.

Been trying to get into that show Sense 8...but it's fucking slow. The first 2 episodes were basically 35 minutes of bullshit then 5-10 minutes of actual plot development...TO BE CONTINUED! Damnit.

I watch the NFL during football season then shut the cable off. Occasionally I'll binge watch something on Netflix - typically cartoons, but there have been a couple of exceptions in my past (Burn Notice was awesome!).

As for TV... I can't do ads. I get upset when plots are too choreographed or budgeting/marketing of the content demands repetition of tropes. That said, I find many shows inspiring, and I'm particularly drawn to characters and their portrayal. I watch a series maybe once every 2-3 months, and it impacts my outlook considerably, making me feel more engaged my reality. Strange how that works.

I'm not very good to watch things with though... I sit there looking for inconsistencies to be upset by. Sometimes I find myself forcing it, which is just silly.

Not TV, but I watch all the Netflix and other such providers. I don't do this to numb my brain though - quite the contrary. I do it so that I may examine the creative processes behind everything. It feeds my creativity. The unseen process is so much more interesting than the content.

I actively resist marketing and advertising. One of my absolute least favorite things in the world is the giant commercial that the whole country (I've never left my own country) is becoming. Its as if every interaction is a sales pitch. The phoniness of it is beyond infuriating.

If you watch Twitch.Tv at all you'll realize that PDP isn't all that unique. He's your garden variety gamer personality. Well maybe that's a disservice to him. Maybe he's better than the others. Just saying that you'll find plenty of that on Twitch.

Some of it is funny though. I used to watch ExcessiveProfanity's channel until he went apeshit one night and banned me for disagreeing with him about how worldly he was. He had wild mood swings when playing really difficult games and it was great to watch.

None of them are particularly intelligent. Just entertaining ( some, not all ) to watch. That said they're a step up from their female counterparts who just flash smiles and big tits for income.

Insofar as TV goes I don't watch public or package channels. I came to the conclusion in my twenties that TV is more off than on. More of a waste of time than it is time well spent. Objectively speaking we spend half our time watching commercials for shit we don't need nor want. Nobody can call that time well spent.

I do watch subscription channels because they tend to lack commercials.

@PaulMaster - not an INTP thing. All humans hate commercials unless they managed to get something out of it. If it doesn't reveal something of value to you and it shows up routinely of course you'll hate it. It is a waste of time!

I haven't watched TV in nearly 3 months, and I've come to notice that since I've been TV free, I struggle to sleep, more so.

There used to come a point when I would look at the clock, know that I should sleep, put something on the TV and watch it till I slept, or at least just listen to it.

Before that time in life, I used to have to sleep in silence, I'm not sure when that changed.

But these days, I don't like the silence. It's deafening. Having no TV around has just encouraged me to read- constantly, or write. But the problem with that is that I just can't seem to stop, makes my brain more active.

TV brainwashing set me to sleep.

I need to find a median.

As for me, whenever I get more money my priority is buying a bigger, better TV. I only watch US cable channels though as I don`t like hearing the Aussie accent for longer than three consecutive seconds per day, and I stream the channels to the TV from my laptop via HDMI. Everything else I do on the computer I also use the big screen TV for, like work, games, movies, surfing the web, Skype etc... oh and reading Kindle!

The only time I really watch anything is if it's a fandom of mine.
I have a constant need to be obsessed with at least one fandom.

Gravity Falls - this ended in February, and I still spend hours every day thinking about it.
