Do you have a problem with others informing you of something you already know?

this is something I noticed about myself. If someone else is trying to explain something to me, and I already know it (or think I do) I will interrupt them, (or want to) and either let them know I already know, or prove that I already know by attempting to finish their sentence. I have a hard time with just sitting there letting them explain it to me. It just feels very awkward for me to sit there and listen to them explain something to me when I am already fully aware of what they are telling me.

i am not sure if this is an ego/pride thing like I am generally the one that is very knowledgeable about various stuff, and that someone else explaining it to me is basically like they think i am ignorant, or whatever. or if it is something else.

curious if this is an intp thing at all

well yea I didnt mean like exactly what they were saying, but i cut in and basically say the same thing they were gonna say...roughly.

If I simply already know something, but they had no reason to suppose I knew, or didn't want to risk my not knowing and figured a quick instruction is safer than relying on assuming I already know, then I usually just let them finish. What will my saying anything prove? I mean, sure, that I already know, but why does it matter? It's getting done either way and, ultimately, I may have forgotten something or otherwise be wrong about a detail.

If, on the other hand, what they're telling me is patently obvious ("Be careful on this ice"), I usually have some sarcastic reply on hand ("Oh, shit, I was gonna do some acrobatics there! Thanks!").

I can relate to this so much. When people tell me things that I already know are am about to figure out, I feel like someone just stole my thunder, called me an idiot, and thought of me as incapable all at the same time, and my ISFJ mother does this constantly.

By proficiency, I'm sure you mean that you'll just effortlessly demonstrate to the person that you are equally if not more knowledgeable about the subject matter at hand, by summarizing the most important components and their implications, before they can finish throwing it up all over the floor.

Help them understand it better ... whatever "it" is. To me that's a better approach than becoming annoyed. Unless they remain oblivious to what you are doing.

Yup, this is exactly how I feel, and I react this way most of the time as well.

i know logically from their point of view they are doing nothing wrong, and they are trying to be helpful (in some instances) however I have a knee jerk reaction to being told stuff and I know that I am probably being an ass....luckily me being an ass doesnt bother me as much as people telling me something I already know....wow that makes me sound like an egomaniac

I think everybody gets bored with things they already know. I doubt this is specific to type.

It can be enjoyable to see how much someone else knows about it, and if it isn't presented in a condescending way, then I see no reason to take it in that way. We can't all know what we all know; there will be some redundancy.

Just today I had someone who's just barely my superior get all high and mighty about the placement of a tool, which as soon as he said why they're their, I remembered being trained to use them. He went on to say he was basically an expert because he was trained with them a whole lot, but never had to use one outside of training... when I have had the same training and did use it outside of training. I was also already mad at him for basically telling me to mind my own business when something was wrong with a battle buddy's truck and I asked what it was. Sorry for asking a question, guy. I had no idea you found it so offensive.

If I think I already know something I usually cut the other person off midway and ask what they're going to talk about; if I'm right, then I'll say I already know it so I won't have to waste time.

Wasted time is the reason for the annoyance. It's not ego. If I've really forgotten something I'll listen.

It annoys me a lot, because I feel like they're insinuating that I'm ignorant or incapable when they go on detailed explanations of things that they should know that I should know.

I have been working on resisting the urge to interrupt, walk away, or get angry, since I know this is not a reasonable response. I'm afraid I frequently cause conflict with my well-meaning mother when I react this way....

Nobody seems to realize how much this bothers me

I come across as impatient which upsets them as I hurry them along to be finished already. For some reason, interupting people and saying "yes I know" has an even worse effect.

If it's someone I'm not in the position to offend, I often just stop listening until they are done.
Otherwise I interrupt them.

Yup. I can get impatient. I used to be moreso; I'd stop people who were trying to tell me how to use something and say "Yes, it's obvious how to use this thing just from looking at it, can we move on." I just didn't want to waste time zoning out while someone droned on at me for an hour or so. I actually managed to make one administrative trainer walk off in a huff, although at the time I merely thought "Great, I can finally get to work."

It didn't endear me to people that with no training on equipment or interfaces I'd never seen before, I'd usually be the most productive person in the building by the end of the day, just because I'd do things like read the instruction manual and the built-in help, then design a least-inefficient workflow. By the end of the second week I'd be bored enough to be writing instructional walkthroughs for most major tasks.

Yes! I have this problem constantly. I think it's because I don't work well with others, so I usually go off and do my own thing. Then, when someone tells me to do something, they feel the need to tell me how to do it because they're not aware that I already know how.

It's either that, or the fact that they think I'm stupid due to my lack of communication.

Either way, I usually just ignore them and let my thoughts wonder until I can see that they are done talking.

I get annoyed too and show it visibly if the person is acting up specialist of the subject, stating the obvious or repeating something he/she already said.

My boss tends to repeat herself and have no memory to whom she already said stuff, when she's doing that to me, I just complete her sentences, word to word from last time she said exactly same thing.

Yes, basically. There really isn't too much to add, besides some examples from work or other interactions with whomever. I'd say it stems from not wanting to waste time. The most recent occurrence (yesterday) I just said 'yeah' and nodded my head during the course of his explanation. Granted, they might just be trying to be nice rather than imply superiority because they apparently know more than you and are behaving as a higher up in this situation, if only temporarily. Like someone else said earlier there's probably no way for them to know that you already knew, and that time is essentially being wasted. If anything, as a substitute for the wasted time you get some human interaction that may or may not bring about any benefits or experience..

I for one sure don't like redundancy, however I'll usually "throw them a bone" (especially ESFJs) so to speak and give no indication that I know exactly what they're talking about. Or remain silent as to not seem like a know-it-all.

What I don't particularly care for is when people fell the NEED to try to explain something to me that I could just as easily have figured out on my own, especially when the explanation was too detail-oriented. I'm not incompetent, "I got this".

The only time I finish sentences is when the person cannot think of a way to convey what they are trying to say, so I help them in that regard because I can figure it out anyway.

I usually just smile and keep the peace if the info isn't wrong. I usually access better info or networks in the future if I don't interrupt them so a little patience can give good dividends.

However, I draw the line on wrong info. Expect to be soundly educated if you arrogantly give me wrong info and expect me to eat it up.

I also snap at people who points blatantly obvious things to me. Once I was discussing how to process a document with a delivery guy. He offered his "help" by saying that the parcel was for the Department of so and so, an info that is plastered on top of the document. I curtly replied "You know, I can read"

When(almost 1+ a day) someon told me a thing I already know, I interrupt softly their sentence.
Bizard thing, with a ESFJ I interrupt he dramatically due to the annoyance.
