Can you?

Do you want to?

If so, what do you enjoy about it?

I cannot for the life of me do anything that resembles dancing.
I never feel like dancing in parties and such, but yes, Id like to be able to, just to know that if I needed/wanted to I could do it.

I do something that I like to think is dancing, but it's probably more like 'flailing stupidly about' and I only do it when I'm alone in my room and no one else can see.

I think breakdancing is pretty awesome, though. Doubt I could ever do it, but it seems like fun. Fun to watch, anyway.

I danced at prom. I don't do much dancing outside of those situations, but it's fun, just not a 'me' thing to do, really, but I can...sort of.

I also took a class once for dance dancing. That was hard as hell. Professional dancers have it tough. A very tough discipline. I could never dance well because I have such a lousy posture (as I suspect most INTPs do) and I am very out of tune with my body.

Whilst intoxicated? Damn yes! At my junior college, I was even in the encore singers group, which required lots of choreography (and soberness)...it was roouughhh.. but I managed. I like moving to music, I just happen to be lanky and self-conscious.. except when I'm druunk.. then I'm a dancin' machine!

I used to be big into Swing Dancing in high school. We'd go to a local swing club in an old gangster hideout in a sandstone cave warehouse. Very cool. Haven't done it in a long time though... actually, scratch that. My wife and I took a swing class just a couple years ago...

It's as I feared. Looks like we're hopeless.

The reason I bring it up is because I went along with a bunch of my friends to go to a bar the other night and they all seemed to be having a wonderful, goofy, time on the dance floor. I just couldn't comprehend why they'd want to do such a thing(both the bar or the dancing). I gave it a couple tries, too. I would try to get out there for a bit and then realize that I didn't feel anything that could remotely be considered fun. I liked watching them have fun and being all cute and stuff, but they wouldn't let me exist in the corner trying to analyze the situation.

Even formal dancing just seems like a chore. Whenever I've been forced to do it in the past I couldn't enjoy it. I'm in tune with my body so that's not really the issue. Perhaps I lock up when I'm dancing in the same way I lock up and can't speak when there are too many other people around? Plus the whole sexual side of dancing it is really weird to do in public.

I can't dance "ad hoc", but if I'm taught a particular dance I learn very quickly.

I really only dance if there is a reasonable chance it will get me laid.

I'm a fan of "proper dancing" like salsa, tango or ballet but the stuff that most people try to pass off as dancing just looks like an old man on viagra having a fit.

IMHO

BTW NoIdiots you obviously have a great talent.

I do love dancing, and would like nothing better than to learn to dance salsa. Though the thing is that I've got about as good coordination as a puppet of jelly on a string. Thus the few times I have danced "properly" have been a few long, miserable minutes of "oh, so sorry, oh, I did not mean...you're lucky I do not wear stilettos!"

I can dance.
It'd be better if I were fit and if I knew the steps for "proper dance". I just know a few steps for salsa, son and mexican folk.
Thing is, while I love dancing on my own, I don't like it so much with someone else. That's why I don't know the proper steps. But yeah, when it's just me and the music, it's awesome.

Allow me to expand on that: it's the music that moves the body, like a zen state. It's fun because it's like total, instant understanding of the notes. I figure it's a lot like what the INTP martial artists feel when they're focused.

Insert a stranger there, and I'll try to lead. Of course it doesn't work and I can't take them there (there being the nice place in your mind where music happens) anyway. I have to mind the other person and move as they say, since I don't know the "proper steps" and am, you know, female. Gets boring and culturally loaded.

I will take my previous statement back, I do something similar to that but only with my hands and arms, moving as if they were floating on the music, similar to an orchestra director. I dont think I could use that to dance tho, its like a trance, I cant do anything else while in that state.
I commented this in another thread and Jordan said he does the same thing. Does music affect anyone else in this way?

Maybe we can have a virtual dance party at a set time and date and we'll all just flail around our respective rooms to our own music of choice. That way we can all say that we dance and that we dance at parties, but we can do so without anyone looking at us and judging us.

And if you feel you just have to top the evening off by getting laid, well ..... you know.

INTP dance parties rock!

Be careful about this NoI, someone might think you are having a seizure and call EMS.

To dance and have fun you must loose your inhibitions, so, with this in mind, here is a dance tip for INTP's (it worked for me):

Spend some time in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. When you find yourself dancing like a chicken for a cheesy 10 cent string of beads (and you're sober) you learn to not take yourself so seriously. then you can dance like an idiot and not care what the hell people think (untill,of course, they call EMS).

No, ya'll aren't necessarily!

I am your stereotypical INTP really: uncomfortable in social situations with new people; absent-minded professor like; but still, for some strange reason, the universe has granted me the art of causal dancing, even while sober!

Now, I can only do it under certain conditions, but here is the thing: I'm actually a bit better than most of my friends, who are Es, Ss, and Fs and such.

My main requirement is that I can only do it in clubs/discos. I can't do it in a house party, because I can only get going if they is little attention on me. I wouldn't be able to start up a house party dance going or anything.

I guess I could start up a dance in a club if I was one of the first there, but only if I were with many of my friends who would do it with me at the same time. See, in that case, the observers are the people who don't know you, but in a house party, well, it makes it that more difficult; I have to do it with all my friends or at least the majority, under the situation that if I didn't dance I would be the one looking like a fool.

Anyways, once I get going, well WoW... I really wouldn't be able to believe it if I was observing. In a disco, I once even did a bit of break dancing (no ground sliding stuff or anything, though), and someone even took out their phone to video it (this was when I was a bit younger though, and no one there could do that really).

But do I enjoy it? Well, yes; I can't really justify why though.

However, I listen to the radio a lot, and know a lot of the new song's lyrics. One thing which casual dancing has given me is a newfound respect towards modern dance music, which I just hated before. I am more understanding now!

I would rather stick a pencil in my eye.

Good plan!

"What's that honey? Slow dance to Kenny G? Damn, I'd love to, but right now I'd better get to the ER and have this pencil in the eye thing looked at. Maybe next time, ok."

This just might work!

I have just laughed for the first time in I can't remember! Actual laughter! Not just a snort and smirk. Not just those little pained noises that life requires as antidote to its banal insanity.

You both have my undying gratitude.

I shall grant you each a wish. :D

What, you mean like what happens in thread number 572? :p

My answer to the actual question is: Yes, sometimes, and no, not always by myself. I'll have to tell you about TJ's homecoming dances sometime. :D

I'm doing a dance to proclaim my profound and undying love for loveofreason! The neighbors are yelling "Stop that!" at me from the street. Perhaps I should close the shades. Either that or put something on, huh?

With his usual creative, graceful aplomb I hope.

Never flaccid when it comes to you! Your words are like Viagra for my INTPness!

Oh no. Way too self conscious. I need to be seriously drunk. And even then, it needs to be a very dark club and with the appropriate music. And still I need to close my eyes to be entranced by the sounds, and forget that there's actually people all around. Of course it looks like epileptic seizures...

But sometimes when I'm completely alone in my house, I flail around, jump, roll on the floor, talk to myself, randomly scream, even sing (if you could call that singing). Like a child. But nobody knows it :phear: or would believe it if I told them. I think I can only be truly myself when I'm alone, free and happy with simple pleasures like that. Is that Si?

co-sign 100%

I don't know if that's Si or not though.

Why are we so self-conscious?

I expect I can do the Stoat (ENFP variant) hypnotism dance on a Rabbit hunt (if the ambience is right).

He got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongue
He knows every song of love that ever has been sung
Good intentions can be evil
Both hands can be full of grease
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Well, first he's in the background, and then he's in the front
Both eyes are looking like they're on a rabbit hunt
Nobody can see through him
No, not even the Chief of Police
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace.

Just a footnote: You don't have to be INTP to have reservations about dancing. When I coordinated our firehall for a couple of years we had 18 wedding receptions. The ones where people danced and enjoyed themselves featured three things:

1. Alcohol
2. Not much in the way of light
3. A strategic removal of seating capacity. (You take away chairs after dinner so there aren't enough places for people to sit, usually in the name of "creating dance space" or "room to open up the presents.")

When they're relaxed, somewhat cloaked in darkness and on their feet anyway, more people dance. The exhibitionists gravitate to the light. The rest of make do in the shadows, quite happily.

Oh, and it helps to start out with a "slow dance" like a 1950s doowop standard. Nonthreatening.

:-)

Real dancing is reserved for drunkeness. Limited improvisation style. Last reply went via the Moderator. I must have put a link in.

it's the music that moves the body, like a zen state. It's fun because it's like total, instant understanding of the notes. I figure it's a lot like what the INTP martial artists feel when they're focused.

I feel the same way! Dancing in a group is kinda boring, but occasionally fun, dancing alone is always heaps of fun, but dancing with a compatible partner is a blast. But there are two rules.

For one, no holding. When I dance with a partner, I like to take up all the dance space available running around and movin' to the music. I've had people say that I looked like a professional, but as soon as someone's got their arms around me, I'm pretty much useless.

The second rule is energy. I can not dance to slow music, even slowly. Its just boring, and if it weren't for the sexual nature I would avoid it entirely. Give me some Big Band or Hard Rock. Salsa or House.
