hi
I need some advice, i'm new here. I want to know what people think about a table i made concerning a classification of Decades and Music following the MBTI typology.

I try to correlate the Four Turnings of the Strauss-Howe generational theory with the 16 types of the MBTI.

It's all about a "Time Theory". I observe that the 16 types repeat themselves in a particular sequence in a 80 years cycle or something called a Saeculum.

Tell me if you think i'm right or wrong or if you would change something to it...

Thanks

Note: Sorry, I'm french and i have some difficulties with english. I never talk to anyone, even on the internet.

Cool concept, but I disagree that such correlations could be made since the music people are aware of, like, and prefer are largely influenced by their culture / environment, personality, and degree of exposure. Personality is somewhat related to typology but it is more specific of that person unlike the archetypes of typology.

I could even wholly fit more than one type according to the chart.

I applaud the effort, but it's rather in vain. Certainly the initial rise of each style you could order chronologically, but there are bands, groups, artists etc. who stayed popular and prominent for years and years.

Also I don't see how musical taste is relevant to MBTI.

Certainly I could fit into 5 different eras. Also there are many bands and groups who were relevant for much longer than the 5-6 year periods you're breaking it into.

I agree that a general intergenerational trend exists that includes the disproportionate influence of given types at given times, but... this is a clusterfuck as it currently stands. It also appears to be U.S.-limited in scope.

It would be better to include a few covariates along a time series, for example: major political events, labor statistics, census data, etc. There should also be a spatial component to this as well.

the INFJ space is completely blank.

Probably the only thing that's spot on. ;D

But as others said, it looks fun, but it's nowhere near accurate. Also, you're looking at 'cultures'. No offence, but i doubt you'll ever find intp's have a popular culture... Same goes for a few other types.

No look!

It is the first one listed and all of the categories next to it are empty.

Whatever, I suppose this is what they get for always withholding information until finally someone asks and then being so damn evasive when they are asked.

I made some major mistakes in my Table. First i forgot to mention that to the Counter-Culture Stereotypes there is the Mainstream Culture with her values.

So to the ENTJ Cowboy, who is described as Efficient, there is the Bebop counter-culture who reprensent inefficience.

To the Logical INTP way of life in the end of 70s, there is the Punk counter-culture who value Anarchism.

To the Highly Elitist 80s INTJ there is the Underground Subculture of "Grunge".

To the Mainstream Medias Corporation who promote Realism, Authenticity and the True Self in the end of the 90s (ENFP).... there is the Reality TV where we see a bunch of Posers and Fake everywhere.

What is missing is the Mainstream Stereotypes, the Good ones.

So i understand why the persons here, on the forum, doesn't fit the proposed model.

thehabitatdoctor is intelligent guy.... i like the comments. Yes, it focus primarily on US culture and only on Music. But if you examine the events of each period you will surely discover that each type is appropriate to describe each historical period.

Note:
The Model is Blank for the INFJ... sure... we are in 2012... not in 2020.... but if someone here can predict what will happen in the music scene in 10 or 15 years.... go for it! :)

It was only a test... what i need is strong feedback with scientific emphasis. I appreciate people who improve something.

Person who is illiterate or uncultured pertain to no culture...

Music is complicated because it's both a means of communication that influences and is influenced by social events. Adding type to that (i.e. those who are influenced and doing the influencing) really does make it a tangled mess without covariates.

For example, influential artists in 1994-1999 (Marilyn Manson (INFJ), Nine Inch Nails (INTJ), Blur (INTP), Oasis (INTP), Tupac (ENFP), Lauryn Hill (INFP), etc) were of a type different from the overall membership in the main culture and even "their" subculture.

As for the INFJ-dom period in the future: Holistic psychedelia. Music that starts out in someone's everyday life (not necessarily the artist's), takes a trip based on those emotions and guiding principles, and returns to where it started.

I think it's funny that I find the music supposedly associated with INTPs almost universally annoying. (Mainly the rap, hip-hop, and their ilk)

When i read the comments i was angry. But i will return to my drawing-board and try to produce a more detailed version of it.

It's difficult to produce a mainframe theory or a proto-theory. People don't recognized themselves in this.

I'm not a communication expert. Sometimes we try to share our ideas with other individuals but they don't understand what we mean.

I'm an INTP.... i am a Thinker. I don't know what to say. .. The briefing thing just exhaust me.

Maybe if i was doing videos, some powerpoint presentations, giving some conferences, organizing meetings... explaining things with data-projectors...

.... no sorry ... it's too long :D

INTP is logical, cartesian and the rappers and punks promote anarchism (the contrary). So the INTP era in 1977-1982 saw this kind of counter-culture or subculture. When INTP dominated the Mainstream.

Some comments make me laugh

I refer to this as "idea flash" mode, when one realizes something so awesome that there's no hope of explaining it prematurely without tripping over themselves, stuttering, stammering, and being scatterbrained in general.

Unfortunately I've had this happen in front of large groups of people. :storks:

I meant to say Vicious, but I think there is some definite and lovely viscosity around here, so it works as be.
