There have been a number of these police abuses in and around New York City. They are well publicized. Police go on trial and have gone to jail. This curbs this kind of behavior. As long as we have press freedom there is a change to minimize this abuse. Don't know the percentages though.

There are bad cops and there is "collateral damage" during war. The government itself tries to catch and punish this kind of thing. The measure of success? I don't know.

oh absolutely, theres plenty of moron cops, like there are plenty of moron truck drivers, or machinists, or professors, etc...

id just say the numbers themselves would (probably?) show a great difference in police abuse/deaths....military deaths. The main reason being society seems to ACCEPT gross amounts of death and destruction in the name of 'good' when its halfway across the world in a place nobody gives a fuck about, but when its actually in our own backyards we wont put up with that shit.

military expenditures are the problem. nations arming other nations. nations destroying other nations. not civilians with handguns.

So he goes next door to the supermarket and starts blasting away there. Or, if his heart is set on targeting children, simply waits until school ends and picks them off with a sniper rifle when they're outside the building.

From gun control to impenetrable fortress schools; that's like trying to stop a massive blood hemorrhage with a band aid...

Keep in mind, most of the people who shoot up schools probably don't put much planning into it. I doubt they would go through the trouble of setting up an isolated spot to calculatingly pick off students.
As for the supermarket, that would be a worse place to shoot, considering the shelves that people could hide behind. A school is ideal because you could corner people in a classroom and they'd have nowhere to hide. There are better hiding places in supermarkets.

And I'll tell you why there's such a strong gun culture in America: It's a spinoff of the necessary hunting culture. I have a lot of friends who rely on guns to feed their families and pay the bills. They literally need their guns. The problem is assault weapons, not Winchesters. Gun control should focus on making it harder for Americans to own their AKs and keep M16s and Desert Eagles under their pillows. No one needs a bloody assault rifle to protect himself.

People defending their property during the Rodney King riots certainly needed the assault rifles they used.

Regardless, anybody can do about as much damage with a fully automatic rifle as they can with a single shot rifle, or a shotgun, or a pistol, when the victims are unarmed. Banning "assault rifles" (of which there is no clear definition anyway) would accomplish nothing.

Latest car in the fail train (this one equipped with assault weapons): http://gawker.com/5977464/five-shot-and-killed-by-teenager-in-new-mexico

I assume this one isn't receiving as much attention due to lower body count and/or the underage perpetrator.

Ah, but there's an "arms race" aspect to it as well; an "assault rifle" ban breaks a cycle of fear and reduces violent crime indirectly.

I think I hit the point decently here ( * and below): http://www.intpforum.com/showpost.php?p=338807&postcount=42
