I posted this thread in Siberia because it is generally non-proactive, bad behavior on my part, and perhaps belongs in siberia.

I recently read a book that had "suggestions for growth" for each personality type. Here's what they listed for INTP, and Here is my cometary on it.

Book: "Practice ways to state your theories and ideas more simply."
Me: Like write them in crayon?

Book: "Learn different methods of providing critique; some people need to hear the positive before the negative."
Me: In other words find less efficient ways to tell someone that they are an idiot.

Book: "Peruse at least one social, nonintellectual activity."
Me: Being social is difficult and being nonintellectual is difficult doing both at the same time is a near impossibility. Besides isn't multitasking a bad idea?

Book: "Seek self-awareness classes to help you recognize the value of feelings and emotions for yourself and others."
Me: No effort is needed to make this statement any funnier.

Okay. Bitching over. I feel much better now. Ahhhhh.

Pursue one social, non-intellectual activity?? My mind is who I am. How am I supposed to separate myself from that? And self-awareness classes? Didn't know they exist. Sounds like the author needs some classes on being aware of others.

Explain things more simply. Bah! People generally compliment me on how well I explain things and make them more easily understood.
And I think I would be so uncomfortable in this class to make me more touchy-feely that it would be counter productive.
And another thing, why would I want to do for fun what I don't think is fun?

This being contrary thing is kind of fun though. :D

"suggestions to do things that INTP's fail at anyway... except" :D

Except explaining things simple to people, that's easy and i can always explain something to ppl willing so they understand.

But, the hardest thing is to formulate what you are thinking verbally. For me, nightmare nightmare nightmare...

I forget what I wanna say because I am thinking of how to say it instead of what I was saying.

I sympathize. This is one of my main problems when I have to explain very complex things.

Whoever wrote that book has either never met an Intp, or is immune to sarcasm....

Perhaps they did meet an INTP and they think they need to "fix" us.

Grrr. That list offends me.

Do you still have the book?

I'd be very curious to see what the author suggests for ESFJs. ;)

Re: comentary on "sugestions for growth for INTP's"

Got it.

Suggestions for growth for ESFJ's;

1. Listen more to avoid Assuming what people or organizations need. (in other words get your head out of your ass)

2. Work on logic skills and managing conflict rather than avoiding it. (in other words think with your brain)

3. Put yourself first occasionally; clarify when others should help themselves. (?)

4. Reexamine your tried-and-true assumptions for work, spiritual practices, and relationships. (in other words, consider the possibility that you may be wrong from time to time)

In another book it says: Slow down, consider possibilities that don't already exist (in other words, get your head out of your ass again), and not take things quite so personally (try being LOGICAL).

It's just not as funny as the suggestions for INTP's

Here is the suggestions for growth for INTP's in that same book: Be better organized (I organize my desk by the sedimentary layer system), be patient with less intelligent people (Try smoking pot, this may help), and work at improving your social skills (what, internet forums aren't enough?)

Calendars are amazing. I'm sad that I only really took advantage of this ancient piece of technology a year ago.

the author really zeroed in on our scatterbrained minds and dusty hearts. the third piece of advice would definitely lead to a slight overhaul of character given enough time, but thats not really what is important to me. plus, an intellectual is an intellectual even while watching cartoons, wry comments, multitasking, and tangential thinking will ensue at some point. you cant turn it off like a lamp switch. number two is creepily touchy feely and number four is unredeemably inane; allow me to quote jack nicholson for advice piece number two: "you cant handle the truth!" fine, fine, number one is actually sound advice.

Oh wow. Thats just making us like the rest of them. Self Improvement is subjective so no one else can tell you how you should improver yourself.

Yes, improver. Well, if you told a kindred spirit your goals and ideals, it seems logical that they could steer you in the right direction.

On the other hand an author who has no knowledge of your goals and ideals may not be the best person to steer you in the right direction
