Careers an INTP would enjoy

Hey, guys! So... it's been a while since I've last posted, huh? Oh well, it doesn't matter, I post so infrequently most people don't remember me anyways, haha. Anyways! On to the point of the thread; what careers would an INTP enjoy? The title says it all, really.

Y'see, I don't want to specify my age, but I will say that I am at an age where what career I want to pursue is something I should seriously think about. For the longest time I've wanted to be an engineer of some sorts, and with the rise of mechatronics, I wanted to be a mechatronics/robotics engineer (I have a knack for programming/computers, as well as some robotics). But with that said, I've also been thinking about aiming to be a university professor. I could use that as a means of research, which I would love to do. But alas, I can already hear some pointing out that as a professor, I would have to well, profess. Teach. But I wouldn't mind that, though. When it comes to topics I'm passionate about I will gladly talk for hours on end about it to help teach whoever's interested.

So yeah, what do you think are some great careers for INTPs? What do you think of my current ideas? Is there something that I should look out for in both of the careers I suggested that might lead to dissatisfaction? (thanks in advance for anyone who responds to this!)

Most STEM fields appeal to us. I'd guess some do well in legal careers.
Something I don't see mentioned often in "careers for INTPs" threads is private investigator. You don't need ex LE experience and you might find the work itself interesting.

From what I've read, professorships in the States are dried up, but I'm not sure if that's also true in Canada. My guess is that it would be just based on the continuation of the previous generations holding those jobs. In this job, it's also easy to lose touch with the latest happens in the industry and start to get myopic and spout the same shit everyone else at the school does.

The tech field is always open, though. Web tech especially. You like programming, you said. How about the next gen of flying robotic toaster ovens? Ok, so more seriously, there are lots of companies looking to "enhance" their products by adding digital components. That means embedded software (Assembly) or web. Electrical engineering is another good choice, and there's plenty of jobs in that (at least globally-speaking - again, I don't know Canada).

Other than that, INTPs like anything complex and creative. e.g. Making rockets, architecture, chemistry, and even cooking (although notably many chefs turn to drinking due to stress).

Don't go into academia. It is a sinking ship that will never resurface. There is no future in it. You might think that you'd be fine moving every 5 months from one frozen wasteland to the next, either finishing postdocs or chasing down another contract teaching job that pays less than minimum wage, but the enormous stress and total lack of job prospects will take a toll on your health-I am sure it has mine (I'm doing a PhD in mathematics and deeply regret the endeavor). Just do the mechatronics degree at Waterloo and get an engineering job.

It is just as bad in Canada... and it's getting worse every year

Meditate, watch some YouTube videos, join forums related to each path and ask other INTPs about their experiences and future prospects, etc. INTPs tend to like engineering, programming, math, etc.

Pick a career (that you also like) offering high salaries to consultants/freelancers, as many INTPs can't thrive/function until self employed. Learn about iodine protocol, nootropics, etc, as they help maintain the motivation/energy needed to be a consultant.

Always save 20% of take-home into a high-yield investment account and avoid debt. Get into the habit while young. 50% is even better.

Its not always about what you do, but many times its about how you do it. INTPs probably can find a place in any branch of human activity/ production. Its a matter of finding the right function.

Would I be able to survive as an RN? (Registered Nurse) As an INTP-T? I mean, logically speaking. It pays decently well, and is a job that's always in demand! (Which is very important) Like perhaps if I got the night portion/shift?

there's a lot of nurse-adjacent jobs you can get with a nursing qualification iirc

not necessarily locked into a hospital gig. but yeah it's a pretty secure starting point for a career i guess.

With a nursing certificate (eventually) could I use that to become/help become a lab tech even? Maybe? Perhaps? (I don't know much about the working field yet)

@SlothfulGinger Sure? The most irritating bit will be dealing with the inherent bullshit bureaucracy of the medical institution. I know a couple nurses. Depending on where you end up the egos of the doctors can make for a harsh work environment. One works with surgeons. Almost all of them are demeaning assholes.

Thoughts on Genetic Counseling for INTPs? As someone who's not a big fan of tech stuff, this career really appeals to me. Research, analysis, interpretation, advice giving, etc. The field is quickly growing and there's a big shortage of male GCs. Salary's not bad either.

Telling patients they have cancer would suck, but as Ti dom we'd deal with it much better than xSFJs.

Genetic counselling? Superficially the title seems like a career taken directly from a dystopic sci-fi

I'm just amusing myself obviously. I think it'd be an interest career: genetics are in their infancy in terms of understanding the complex behaviours that arise from them, a decrease in the price for genome sequencing (and the diversity, like exome, SNP and other genetic mapping techniques) and a more comprehensive understanding of their functions should leave you with a steady source of new information.
