Anyone familiar with this 3D rendering software? If so, any tips/hindsight-wisdom for a beginner?

Here's the link for anyone who's interested, it's free: http://www.blender.org

I don't know anything about it, but it looks interesting. maybe if we screw around with it enough we can figure it out?

I apologize for not replying sooner (the PM did come through), I have a habit of not checking things that aren't flashing or twirling at me. All I have managed to do so far is make twisty cubes, and mirror images (oh! and zebra-ish print), I can't seem to use a majority of the basic editing tools, and I haven't even started with the physics/animations tab.

also, you have set it to refuse PM's and I can't figure out the visitor message thingy.

How do you manipulate wire-frames without one of those 3D stylus things?
Using a mouse would be very difficult, or is there some other way?

Also are there options for algorithmic animation?
Doing it entirely frame-by-frame works, but it's very time consuming.

Oh wow, now this brings back memories...

I haven't used blender since high-school :phear: so I don't remember much even though I used it for a couple of years...

But I can show you some crappy stuff I still have lying around:

/me rolls up his sleeves...

Yes, I am very familiar with several 3d softwares, including that.... bluah, software called blender.

I kinda don't like it because the interface really is counterintuitive. Yes most 3d softwares are a clusterfuck of options and controls, but usually they are arranged via windows styled interface. You know, modifiers in the modifiers lists, animations under the animation tab on the menu bar, and so forth. left click to move the model, or poly/edges/verts if you're editting the mesh, right click for options, and so forth.

but that's every 3d software i've used-- and i've used a lot of them, except blender. right click to move the model, left click for options. Depending on the version you have, the animation controls (including the curve editor) would be in the animation tab or... somewhere else.

Yes, you can animate without going frame by frame. You can set the necessary key frames and go back to the curve editor and edit how fast or slow it goes into that frame.

Some 3d software comes with a move on edge option, so that you can control points down a edge. Some comes with snap tools that help you move along grid points, verts, faces, or snap to tangent on 2d lines....

What you are asking is the equivalent of asking a nuclear physicist what you can do with atoms. What specifically are you trying to accomplish?

I used to design a couple of stuff in Blender. Took a class as well in High School.

I'd say just experiment with it. Use the tutorials they are extremely helpful, almost everything I learned on my own was because of the extensive knowledge available. You could watch a couple of free movies made from it. Try to start small, I started with a glass, went on to dining tables, houses, then cars. Its quite addictive though once you are really in the mood (I once spent my entire day trying to sculpt a face on it). Yeah its basically dragging vertices and making vertices.

Blender is mediocre at best. It's (as stated above) counter intuitive and difficult to understand with an annoying high learning curve. If you've ever used/intend to use any other more popular industry standard 3D programs you'll have switching between the two. I've found blender lacks basic options that makes 3D modeling hell of a lot easier in Max and Maya. Even being free it lacks basic options like "inset."
