Agree with the shpongle love in the first post. Absolutely fantastic band (great live too). In the psychedelic vein I also like Astral Projection and Electric Universe as personal favourites. I also have a great passion for Boards of Canada. Quite enjoy some acid techno too, plus a little bit of Surgeon.

Patrick Wolf is probably the most original electronica artist i've heard so far..uses samples from fireworks exploding and ambulance sirens.. interesting lyrics too.
I haven't heard much from this genre as I've only started to get interested in it.

Try Justice. They're incredibly catchy.

Also the band Minus the Bear has an electronica remix of their rock songs. They're guitarist plays things so meticulously sometimes that it sounds like a sample being repeated when it's not, so it prompted them to try making a novelty LP of their songs WITH samples and alternate arrangements and tempos. It's rather neat. Of course, their guitarist added his own human samples to it as usual, too.

What do you mean by "Electronica"? That's like saying "Give me some rock bands" which could range from country to classic to indie. What subset of electronica do you like? Ambient, Downtempo, Lounge, House, Trance, Techno, Goa, etc.. then I can give you a slew of artists.

I like Squarepusher and Four Tet. I feel like there should be a lot of electronica I would enjoy, but whenever I go looking for new electronic music... I just don't like much of it at all. Anything with a four on the floor beat... I just automatically ignore. Anything with a strong dancing influence... just sort of boring.

I'm more into older synth-pop I guess... Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra are cool. I like interesting sounds, and strong melody.

I agree with you, ifb, but the OP hasn't posted since like 2 years ago. They're probably not even into "electronica" anymore, if they ever knew really what it was.

I have problems defining it, though. I have a very negetive view of the term "techno." I feel like sometimes I use the word "electronica" to define music that isn't "techno" that is made entirely with software and electronics.

My homepage listed in my Personal Profile here, a MySpace Music page, I think I put under the genre of Electronica (I think you get to pick 3 categories under which your music falls and by which it will be searchable)... But I think I might also have put it under IDM. Hah! Even though it couldn't possibly pass!

Maybe MySpace's music genre breakdown wasn't good, or something. I haven't updated it in a while, and I don't remember what they are.

I think electronic music has too many sub-genres. Rock does, too. Bleck. I also hate appending the word "indie" to things to help people get a better idea of what it sounds like. Although, peculiarly, it does. Though just saying "indie music" people, I think, conjure all kinds of different ideas. "Indie" is also used interchangeably with the term "post-punk." Wouldn't you agree? I'm largely uninterested in whether my definitions of these genres and sub-genres are correct as most of the world is unfamiliar with, not only most sub-genres, but the genres themselves, anyway. Nor does knowing the correct meaning of a genre or sub-genre accomplish anything as most people will have a different idea about the music to which you're referring. *sigh* I wish it wasn't like that.

Lots of good music out there, though. Somehow a solution has to come about!

These guys are like guilty pleasures to me. I always hated to listen to mainstream, but sometimes you just can't help it because it's good. And it seems inevitable that any DJ producing consistently good tracks will eventually become mainstream.

So glad I'm not the only nerd who's okay with listening to Pandora. Though I haven't listened in a long while because streaming audio was abolished here at my job.

I was quick to discount it - thinking I was going to start a Bjork station that would eventually be cross-associated so far that I'd end up listening to Mariah Carey - but caved one day because I wanted to listen to a radio and didn't have one.

I've found like 10 bands through Pandora that I love! Shame begone!

I love last.fm as it helps me find and compare my tastes against others but the past year or so I've been using Pandora mainly (especially having it on my phone and traveling so much I constantly listen to pandora in my car)

Just listened to some Fat Jon on youtube, I like the beats and I would like this in the right mood... a little too ambient for my style though. I like a melody more in the forefront... and a little more variety/changes/unexpected parts. I'll have to listen to more.

Prefuse 73 is my kind of music though... good stuff.

I need to start using Pandora through my Squeezebox... now that it's free.

Oh god I haven't listened to some good electronica in ages (went on a electronica hiatus, I kinda have genre moods over the years). Reading this thread, some of the artists mentioned gave me such a nostalgia punch.... I feel it is time for a comeback. I shall definitely peruse this thread.

I just saw Venetian Snares for his tour with Wisp, Cyrusrex, and DJ NAHA. It was pretty awesome, apparently he broke some piece of equipment and stormed off all pissed after Leaving on the "roll" feature of the Mixer on at about 1/32 notes. So he leave the stage and everyone is standing there listening to this really trill mechanical sound thinking he was going to come back. He didn't and it was fucking hilarious.

Okay so I listen to litterally every kind of Electronic music sub-genre, some more than others... Here are some artists that have my attention at the moment:

Wisp (I discovered him at the show, he is actually really good, very melodic IDM, like flashbulb)

Casino Versus Japan (Super awesome ambient and downtempo)

Freeland (Electro, great stuff)

School of Seven Bells (Pretty downtempo, but a very uplifting sound.)

Ulrich Schnauss - (This guy is the man, for the most part Ambient and Downtempo, but he genre drifts sometime. But genre is irrelevent anyway, everything he makes is golden.)

Apparat (I'm not sure what to call him, it's like one part minimal, one part trance, and one part progressive house)

Amon Tobin (If you haven't discovered him yet, DISCOVER HIM NOW! He is pretty all over the place to, ranging from Trip hop to IDM.)

Bibio (these guys are great, they go from accoustic guitar to abstract hip-hop to electro.

I like jazz, blues, swing, soul, 60s-80s pop, 60s-80s rock, latin, classical, chant. I don't know if that would help maybe. I don't like music that's too freeform (I'm talking extreme, ambient music sort of freeform), I need to perceive order & purpose of some kind.
