You're right that the organic/local/grass-fed/pasture-raised movement is shaking things up. I'm optimistic things will change. But it's going to take a while. We're not talking about adoption of a new technology here. This has to do with culture/values. Plus for people to get prettier/smarter, parents have to be eating a pure/whole-foods diet for many years before the body fully repairs itself and gamete quality improves. Then this has to be repeated across many generations...You can't just eat better for a few weeks after eating mainly junk food your whole life before you get pregnant and then expect your child to be an adonis. Not saying it's impossible, just very unlikely.

I'm not really seeing the same thing you are seeing. I've lived in several parts of the country, and this phenomenon appears to be regional. I've spent a lot of time abroad and Americans are the largest human beings on the planet. I don't just mean in terms of sheer weight, it's also bone structure and musculature. It strikes me as unnatural and unattractive. I don't want to go out with a woman who outweighs me and has broader shoulders than I do. I'm a thin dude, and I find this is the rule rather than the exception in America. In China, I rarely felt smaller than any of the women there. That's changing quickly though too.

Human beings just aren't meant to be that big. In most places I've visited where people still pretty much eat their traditional diet e.g. mostly carbohydrate/vegetable/little meat, people are just a whole lot thinner, but still quite strong, and you don't see them guzzling coffee every morning and afternoon either. In the cities it's a different story, with the trend being towards Americanization.

In the end, the litmus test for me is the elderly. Old people look awful in America. In China, especially in the countryside, they look strong and dignified. After a certain age, people here are on a degenerative disease rollercoaster, in and out of the hospital for surgery/tests, etc. In many other places, old people just keep on ticking well into their 80s and 90s w/o even having to get an injection.

See, I was blown away by how big breakfasts were over there. Of course, here in restaurants the breakfasts are huge, but I don't think anyone is expected to eat the whole thing. Breakfast in most US homes (especially during the week) is a small bowl of cereal, if breakfast is eaten at all.

I expected the same portion sizes in London. But when I was a guest around breakfast time, most people had these enormous breakfasts with a lot of meat products, and eggs, and beans and Lord knows what else swimming in the grease. Even the eggs were fried in actual grease. Apparently, non-stick pans aren't a thing.

Having said that, it's been almost 10 years, and I remember a lot of talk then about Britain having numbers very similar to the US.
