Have any of you ever been told you are monotone? I have been told this many times and I translate this as I am boring and have no personality. I do not like that people see me like this. Does anyone here encounter this problem, and if so what do you do about it? I feel like if I try to be more animated I will appear fake.

Only when I'm tired. Otherwise, my voice is pretty animated....though sometimes in an awkward, hard-to-decipher way. I've taken to being sarcastic without the vocal cues...

I feel like if I try to be more animated I will appear fake.

Well, it would be fake for you, to start out...but I bet it would be like changing any other habit: start out strained, then gradually smooth out until it's normal for you.

I have many different voices. I think everyone has...

The bored, monotone, negative, I don't give a fuck-observer voice. (common)
The monotone go away from me voice.
The animated enthusiastically telling a story/theory voice. (common)
The warm, caring friendly voice. (common)
The anxious, shaky voice.

Dead on, but I don't have an anxious/shaky voice anymore.

At work when the phone rings they get the "monotone go away voice". If it's a boring person telling a boring story, they get the "monotone idgaf voice". If it's a friend they get the "warm caring voice". If I'm excited about a story or theory, I become VERY animated with my voice.

About a year ago, I was told that I speak monotonously. Thereafter I made an effort to listen to how I speak, realizing that I do, in fact, speak in that manner. I don't bother trying to animate my speech or anything. If people perceive me as uninterested, so be it; after all, I usually am.

In general with most of society, yes, most of the time I do it quite normally or other times I do it on purpose to piss them off and see their reaction :D But in my small circle of friends, I'll generally try and speak normally.

Well I guess I will have to practice at it because I am weird enough without coming off as a bore. When I think about it, I probably practiced my way into monotony because I hate for people to try to read me, or think they can predict me. So I give nothing which forces them to have to take the time to get to know me which seems impossible for people to do. But that's a whole other story. Anyway, I was just curious if it was an INTP thing or just a me thing.

It might be an INTP thing. I dunno.
I don't generally speak in monotone, but I have been told, repeatedly, that I never get excited about anything. Ever. It seems to upset people, particularly those I'm close to.

The sensors and somewhat the NF-types can't follow an NT as easily nor do they relate to the ways of an NT nor do they feel comfortable about it.

The "monotone" is less of a problem to the NTs that have extraverted thinking as it's outer organizing, better with expression, though the ENTPs (with Ti) are Extroverts and INTPs (with Te) are Introverts. The least it's a problem to ENTJs (TeNi), then to ENTPs, and then to INTPs, and the most it might be a problem to INTJs (TiNe) though as they have such a good outer (Ne) organizing ability with the most dominant Ti, and have extravert sensing and extravert intuition (that makes them visually extraverts), they should manage if they keep it simple enough. One thing the IN(T)xs should not do is start to compete talk or and talk too much even when the Sensors etc. are talking a lot; the INxxs better take their optimal place, and it depends of the people they are with.

No, I'm actually pretty lively when I speak. I just tend to mumble when in situations where I don't want to speak, but it's still not a monotone.

I have a very flat voice. I've been told its soothing and smooth. People who do not know me have trouble telling apart my sarcasm from regular speech, also on an unrelated note I have no laughing noise. When I really laugh its silent even though my body is doing the familiar laughing motion.

I was monotone when I was a teenager, and I was told about it. It was not long after that when I made a conscious attempt to animate my voice, vary the pitch, volume and tempo, and use body language. I built new habits. It doesn't come naturally, and I still have a lot that I need to improve, but I am much more confident about my ability to orally communicate than I was ten years ago.

No, I have a very animated voice. I could be a voice actor.

Im monotone.

I get slightly animated when I'm being fake in social situations, or when I'm sarcastic.

But sometimes I'm sarcastic while being monotone.

I prefer monotone..

Yes, I guess I am, but I try to inject variances, its just you can hear the monotone definitely. Yep. I have to try hard not to be.
