I have been described as aloof. I think the not responding unless I have something useful to say might have something to do with it. Like lor, I like to keep a little distance between me and the topics under consideration. It does give a wider perspective. I find that useful.

I'm extremely aloof. I generally just sit back and observe or listen. I figure that since most of the conversations I engage in with random people tend to go nowhere, I don't make the effort. It's terribly frustrating because sometimes I miss out on potentially good connections, and I don't particularly like feeling isolated. Just because I am willing to observe and be alone it doesn't mean I want you to isolate me.

People describe me as aloof like it's a bad thing. Were I not so aloof, I might care.

It's probably because I don't have deep connections with most people (only a select few) and their pointless conversations bore, irritate, and drain me. It could also be due to the fact that I never answer my phone, try to avoid returning calls for as long as possible, constantly turn down invitations to get together (and show up late when I do accept), and otherwise avoid unnecessary contact until such a time as I deem it tolerable.

I have been called arrogant. I was extremely shocked since I don't see myself that way at all. It caused me to do some serious introspection and ask a few people that know me very well what they thought. Nobody else thought I was arrogant, so I'm guessing the person who thought I was had just misunderstood me in some way.

So I asked my father (who is probably either an INTJ or an INTP but refuses to take the test) and my brother (tested INTP) if they would describe me as aloof.

My father said yes, but that I had been more so when I was younger and that once I got to know or felt comfortable with people I was less that way.

My brother said no, but that I was distant and self-absorbed. I asked what the difference was and he didn't reply, so I looked up aloof in the dictionary:

adj. Distant physically or emotionally; reserved and remote

So I'm counting my brother's reply as a "yes" also.
