I've never met anyone who likes the Mars Volta, yet 3 people on this list name them. Awesome.

-the Mars Volta
-Tool
-Nine Inch Nails
-Rammstein
-Radiohead

And a separate list for "Classical":

-Shostakovich (8th String quartet, 4th, 6th, and 9th Symphonies are my favorites)
-Stravinsky (the Rite of Spring, Petrouchka, the Soldier's Tale, and Symphony of Psalms)
-Ravel (Daphne et Chloe, Rapsodie Espagnole, Concerto for the Left Hand, Piano Concerto)
-Debussy (Piano Preludes, La Mer)
-Brahms (2nd, 3rd, and 4th Symphonies)

tmv was the most intense concert experience ever. aragon ballroom in chicago was the perfect venue. just incredibly positive vibes from the crowd reciprocated with three plus hours of playing.

Anyone else know any good modern stuff? Those 3 bottom ones are realy the only modern bands I actually like and follow. Just something unique that feels good.

Oh before I forget, EVERYONE here should listen to this song:

Bruce Dickinson - "No Way Out... to be continued"

It is the one that starts out, "Welcome to the world young man..."
Not, "A silent sleeping vampire..." [this is the second-ish part to the song mentioned above titled, "No Way Out... Continued"]

I will not say anything on it, just to see if anyone else sees the same idea.

If you love Led Zeppelin you must get into Rush if you already aren't. And then if you love Rush get into Yes.

As for modern, I'd say:
Pixies - Doolittle, Surfer Rosa
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Chevelle - Wonder What's Next
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
The Raveonettes - In And Out Of Control
Boris - Pink
Quest For Fire - Quest For Fire
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R, Lullabies To Paralyze, Queens of the Stone Age

There's a lot of good heavy metal from the 2000s, but I don't know if you're into that.

Current top 5-

The Contortionist (progressive deathcore, if you like this sort of stuff at all you need to check them out)
As Cities Burn (post-hardcore/Alternative Rock/progressive rock)
This or the Apocalypse (technical metalcore)
It Prevails (Melodic Hardcore)
If These Trees Could Talk (instrumental post-rock)

Idk. I'm bored.

I will name current bands only, because it would be too hard to pick 5 if I include the classics like floyd and lep.

KATATONIA- Some of the best songwriters in metal. Not a bad song in their bones.

OPETH- Been my favorite band for years. simply amazing

AGALLOCH- Brilliant brilliant mix of black metal, doom metal, neofolk, post rock, ambient, black gaze ect. Nothing out their like it.

DEVIN TOWNSEND- Mad Genius. Ocean Machine, Synchestra, Terria, Infinity, Alien? Where do you begin? All beautiful work that stands the test of time.

ISIS- This is the perfect music to sit and think as it carries your mind away into an oceanic bliss. RIP Isis I regret never gettin the chance to see it live.

The other 5 I wish I could have mentioned too.

Porcupine Tree- Doesnt every intp relate to songs like A Smart Kid and Even Less?

Anathema- Latest album has been like a spiritual healing session for me. Great stuff.

Godspeed You Black Emperor!- Nuff said

Novembre- Most underrated band in the world. Period

My Dying Bride- Masters of doom and despair.

Getting older, I've developed a loathing for metal I never imagined possible. Some is still tolerable, even enjoyable, though I can rarely find a use for it. It's just too blunt and with little variation.

Failure
Radiohead
Bright Eyes
Cursive
Buckley
Pearl Jam
Modest Mouse
Rilo kiley
Pixies
Depeche Mode
GY!BE
ISIS
Tom Waits
Aereogramme
Califone
Blondie
the Clash
Adam and the Ants
Elliott Smith
Old 97's
Screeching Weasel
Murder by Death
Danzig (and Misfits, before he left)

Yeah, five was not enough, but I'll stop here. I also love the hell out of some old motown and soul. Listening to Bobby Womack, atm. Classical music is always on time, and I'm especially fond of Rachmaninov.

My musical taste is always changing (yeah, yeah, the zillionth time you've heard/read that) and I could never choose only five bands. I'll just resort to using some statistics here (INTPness, maybe?). This is my last.fm top 8 from the last seven days:
-Thrice
-Melvins
-Jonathan Coulton
-Tool
-Pelican
-Maybeshewill
-The white stripes
-Cryptopsy

These are by no means my ''all-time'' favorite bands.

I can only name an absolute #1 - Dir en grey. And I have a strange feeling their lead guitarist is an INTP... anyway, people either love them or hate them. It's sometimes embarrassing to be a part of the fanbase [oh god, I hate most of those people just by looking at them], but I try not to mingle with the fans too much. It doesn't change the fact that the band is awesome.

It's always hard for me to 'define' my taste by using a few artists, because it's diverse and very specific at the same time. BUT, since you are aware of this, I guess I can answer the remaining part of this question traditionally:

The final four [took me forever to pick]:

Onmyouza
Maximum the hormone
Tokyo Jihen
abingdon boys school

Wow wow wow, what? Kyo is an INTP? That's amazing...I assumed he was INFx but he could very well be a TP due to "bottled up" Fe, and I guess most "feelers" wouldn't be as into the over-the-top expressionism and themes that he's into. I also do remember him having had nihilistic tendencies. Fuck. And I was just thinking about trying to cover a song of theirs. [not "one of them"... I promise]:phear:

There was a time when Dir en grey and Anaal Nathrakh (extreme black grindcore) were my favorite bands. I got into Meshuggah after that. The Offspring was one of my favorites for a long time, saw someone mention them, a lot of people here also seem to be into Devin Townsend/Strapping, which is great too

**Edit, realized you said guitarist and not singer

1. Foetus - experimental, dark, old school industrial. very special, love it or hate it.

2. Coppelius - german band, 19th century style. "metal" without guitars, but with clarinets, cello & contrabass. they call it "chambercore" or "heavy wood". beautiful and aesthetic. yet aggressive.

3. The Sisters of Mercy - everyone should know them.

4. Stillste Stund - "stillest hour". german band, very philosophical and atmospheric.

5. Nine Inch Nails - Should be known too.

Does anyone take these electronic/rave bands as serious music? Bands like Skrillex and Deadmau5...in spite of the phrasing to that question, it's meant completely sincerely...well, half sincerely. I mean, I would definitely (temporarily!) lose my shit at a concert like that, but come on, in the light of day is it really meant to be taken as authentic music? Can some bleeps survive the test of time? Maybe bleeps with sentiment or thought behind their construction, but bleeps...does anyone think the "music" goes beyond that?

- Depeche Mode - This band is INTPish. You are an incomplete INTP without liking these. Then again, leave them for me.

I feel kind of awkward saying this since most people find it annoying, but I love to listen to just about anything with Vocaloids doing the singing, though if I had to pick bands I would say...

fripSide - J-pop/trance
Nightwish - Melodic Gothic Metal
Trivium - Death metal/Metalcore
Aya Hirano - J-pop
Assorted Vocaloid songs, I love the Vocaloids, their songs cover just about every genre.

Not in this particular order, just these bands.

1. Mixtapes
2. Showbread
3. Pink Floyd
4. The Beatles
5. Zebrahead
6. The Waybacks

I STRONLY recommend these bands to everyone. The genres are all quite different, but they're the only bands that I really listen to consistently.

The Stone Roses - my all time favourite band, i strongly strongly recommend this band, i have never met another person who loves them as much as i do and i've been hoping, however naive it may be, that it's an INTP thing
The Smiths - for some reason music is one of the only things that makes me "feel" things and i feel some weird irrational connection to the Smiths and the things their songs are about, or maybe it's just because i was bought up listening to them
Air - i don't really know why, thet're just good
Friendly Fires - well i saw them when they came to where i live and they were one of the best bands i have ever seen live, listening to them reminds me of the feeling of being there

i don't have a no. 5
