I have four, I can't decided on a final one because I don't listen to any artists as much as these:

1. Radiohead
2. Sigur Rós
3. Portishead
4. Sufjan Stevens.

Normally though, i like one or two songs of an artist/band/whatever rather than the artist in general. The above are the exceptions to that rule

No order because I can't possibly order these:

Matt Uelmen: (Instrumental/melodic) dark ambient. Example song: Rogue

Pain of Salvation: Progressive metal. Example song: The Perfect Element
Dream Theater: Progressive metal. Example song: Metropolis Part 1
Opeth: Progressive death metal. Example song: Serenity Painted Death
Porcupine Tree: Progressive metal. Example song: Way Out of Here

Vàli: Neo-folk. Example song: Sorg

Be warned that the sound volume varies wildly between the youtube videos. Each of these songs change quite a bit over the course of the song, so don't prematurely decide that you don't like any of it!

(Yes I can count, I listed 6 artists!)

Iron Maiden (Hallowed Be Thy Name)
Alice in Chains (either "Head Creeps" or "Real Thing")
Joe Satriani (Searching)
Megadeth (My Last Words)
(argh, i didnt get to include black sabbath and pink floyd)

1. Joe Satriani
2. Collective Soul
3. Daft Punk
4. Jethro Tull
5. Beethoven

This list really isn't in order either except for the first 2, or at least the first one. The other 3 are just bands that I really like.......but that's along with a lot of other bands once I actually think about it......DARN YOU RULE OF 5!!!!!( Aww crap I didn't even get to put Led Zepplin up there......*sigh)

And I am also noticing some similar bands pop up like Nine Inch Nails and of course Tool.....The funny thing about me and Tool is that I can't even remember hearing an entire song by them, what I have heard was pretty good though, but the funny part I had in mind in the fist place was that I have heard a lot more of A Perfect Circle and they are reeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllly good...(and I know they have the same singer)

Here are my favorites, in no particular order, except the shortest name is last:

Diablo Swing Orchestra
Pain of Salvation
Borknagar
Helloween
Kamelot

I actually don't have that many bands I like. Enjoyable music is hard to find. And when I find a band which have some good songs, they usually have three bad songs for every good one. Meh.

Justifications for all of them involve some mention of the particular artists voice, and lyrical content.

In general I dislike even the premise of ranking artists, but one person whose work I've come back to time and again has been Chopin. Something about a listening to one of his preludes on a rainy evening after an incredibly stressful episode in my life, sipping tea and blankly staring out the window... it just sooths my soul.

:)

Beyond that, it's way too hard; I think ranking any further would make my brain explode, lol.

just five... oh god, this is gonna be impossible. okay. here i go.

1) the dresden dolls. punk-cabaret, some weird brand of indie-alternative, i dunno. this is the only band i can ever say i had a true obsession with, and though it's died down in recent times, i think i'll always love them. amazing piano + amazing drums + amazing lyrics + just the right amount of angst = LOVE. plus, they're both fantastic people (i've met them!) even if they're on an indefinite hiatus right now.

2) arctic monkeys. british indie? i don't think i've heard a single song by these guys that i havent loved. their music is fantastic, and catchy, and their lyrics actually have depth. wonderful.

3) regina spektor. anti-folk. i don't even have words for how amazing this woman is. i would kill my own child to have an ounce of her talent, creativity, and sexiness.

4) jason webley. some brand of european-style-folk-awesomeness. he's also all sorts of amazing, and a really awesome guy (again, i've met him). he gives fantastic hugs, and somehow managed to remember me from a different show, a year prior. amazing talent.

5) this is a toughie... i feel like i have an obligation to say the red hot chili peppers, because they're the only band i can say i really "grew up" with and still listen to, and i love them to death, but lately, there are so many other bands that i'll be more inclined to listen to... i dunno. we'll just call this a filler spot.

anyway, that's it.

They're a band you have to grow in to and it also depends what you have heard. I first got their album 10,000 days a few years back and other than the first track Vicarious I hated it. Months later I ended up getting Lateralus, first listen it was interesting but not something I could really focus on, after about 10 listens I couldn't stop playing it. It's one of the best albums of the 00's imo and it is usually in my top album lists. I have Aenema as well and tbh I loved that on first listen, so i'd start there, then again it might be because I'd already heard Lateralus, dunno, but ofc it isn't for everyone anyway.. A Perfect Circle is an easier listen.

Arghh, no Captain Beefheart mentions! Trout Mask Replica is the most complex piece of music I have ever heard.

Nirvana
Captain Beefheart
Beatles

I basically did this by what I would just automatically put on and enjoy anytime. Also, a well-rounded oeuvre counts for something. Although, CB and Nirvana do not have two dozen records each - especially Nirvana, only like four dozen songs total over three proper albums///

Hard to say. I have tons of bands I love. I guess I'll rule some out as they've already been mentioned: Dream Theater, Pain Of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Kamelot, Buckethead, Joe Satriani... I guess most of my favorite bands have already been mentioned.

1. Nine Inch Nails
2. Zeromancer
3. Kill Hannah
4. Isis
5. Pelican

I guess I've been in an industrial/electronica/ambient metal mood.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Brian Eno
Lustmord (dark ambient)
Biosphere (dark ambient)
Kammarheit (dark ambient)
Sigar Ros
Portishead
Eric Satie
Bach
Segovia

Yea, I broke the rules but I don't give a fuck. There's no way I can list only 5. I can't even guarantee that those are my favorites. My tastes change from day to day, month to month, etc... depending on my mood and whatnot.

You should definitely check out Rosetta. Their latest album is pretty much the best Post-Metal album there is.

3. Neutral Milk Hotel ('nuff said)
4. Modest Mouse
5. Rilo Kiley (really all Jenny Lewis)

wow, choosing a top 5 is awful. I must also include: Tilly & the Wall, Streetlight Manifesto, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Regina Spektor, and Defiance, Ohio.

Way to make my first post on a relatively inactive thread.. haha. Yeah.

I can get to the forum with my phone (i'm currently on a train)! For my all time 5, I choose coheed & cambria, the mars volta, the protomen (please listen to their second album, preferably in one sitting), at the drive-in, death. And for my current top 5; between the buried and me, protest the hero, meshuggah, animals as leaders, cynic.

It's not easy to rank things, especially when you have to choose all-time and all-kind music artists, so...

Beethoven
Shostakovich
Rammstein
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter
Metallica (before the black album)

And I cannot talk about Slayer or other bands :storks:

your location is a rip off of lou reed's "some kinda love" (velvet underground) right? that line, "between thought and expression lies a lifetime". great line though.

A Day to Remember (not sure if I'm to be ashamed of this)
Slagsmålsklubben (Swedish blip-blop, fuckyä)
Bring Me the Horizon
Devin Townsend
Maybe... Raised Fist?

But I really don't listen that much to the same band, every time I hear a new one I like the first few songs I hear of them but the ones I hear later never seem as compelling as the first few. Hence, I like two/three songs by many different artists.
