our brain
I personally apply logic to my writing. Is everything I have written logical? Structure? Content? Relevancy? I also apply reception, reread what you have written and decide. Is this good? If not, what is bad? How can I change it to become good? Will this be well received? Do I care? If yes, how do I change it to be well received? If I was the person reading this, how would I receive it, assuming I was this person? Is this how I want it to be received? How do I change it to be received the way I want?

And this book: http://smile.amazon.com/Elements-St...id=1428090470&sr=1-3&keywords=on+writing+well

... have everything a writer needs (other than practice and feedback from people who know what they're talking about).

I haven't read the following book, but William Zinsser is great, and it sounds like something non-fiction writers might be interested in:

Unlike much of the writing advice I've read, Zinsser offers simple, concise reasons for why he believes what he does about style in writing. He doesn't spout out his advice like he's Jesus without sharing his reasoning process as well, which is really important to intuitives, I think. Stephen King also has some good advice for clarity of communication in his memoir:

What are you interested in writing?

you need to be able to be observant in order to write, just like you need to hear to make music and see in order to draw

only with writing its a lot less straightforward, nevertheless you need to be able to pick up on all the little things going on in any given situation, all the disparate narratives and motifs, all the little nuances and gestures as well as their origins, once you can do that you need to learn to prioritize

style should not be focused on, it will lead to shallow writing which gets boring quickly, style should be allowed to develop naturally along with substance, only then may it be the subject of conscious focus

the same goes for the trivial stuff you can get everywhere, puns and jokes, ironies, political opining, philosophical disgressions, these kind of things should be omited insofar as they come directly from -and are expressed through- you as an author imo
