People used to pirate because they simply couldn't afford the goods. Now that we have ultra-fast Internet connections and huge data storage devices people seem to be pirating things simply because they can. Imagine if we were still restricted to 56k dial-up and 1.44MB floppies. ^^
However, illegally downloading software is not as bad as people make it out to be and recent studies have shown this.
Take the music industry for example, you'll find that a lot of those that pirate music actually have a shit-ton of legitimate music. In fact, these people tend to purchase more music than those that do not pirate.
Yeah, that's interesting. I pirate a lot of things, but it's also because I buy a lot of music, films, books, etc, and if I'm ambiguous about something I prefer to download it first before getting a copy. I can't afford it otherwise, which doesn't effect the ethics of such of course.
I also have pirated copies of most comics I own, simply because I prefer to also have a copy on my laptop so I don't have to carry my library around with me. This is legal, as if asked I can simply show my hard copies. So pirating has other quite legimitate uses.
But to be honest, how many films and albums have I simply download off of youtube, which isn't illegal at all given the fact it is public domain? Most of them I think, actually. I suspect this is just the way things are going and corporations/ artists need to adapt.
