I found this article today and I found it interesting. I remember I used to hear that annoying high frequency sound as a kid quite clearly but I can barely make it out now.

Also, the phantom words one... I can only hear "no way" or Norway or something along those lines. What about you guys?

My favourite is the tritone. You can hear it either way depending on how you want to hear it. Try it. If you think to yourself, "these notes are going from high to low," that is what you hear. If you expect the notes to go from low to high, that is what you will hear.

Yeah, it kind of makes you think about how people could be manipulated using simple sounds. After all, we already use music to change our moods, but maybe it can get deeper? I don't know...

The bells one didn't seem to work and the scales seemed different to how they said it would be. Apart from that interesting...

For #1, I could hear "no will" on repeat. I was checking out the site as a procrastinatory activity :/

Listen very carefully. Each individual note is actually two notes. The lower one goes down, and the higher one goes up. This tricks you because the second note(s) is really two notes, one octave apart.

This one is really mean. It is grouped into several descending scales, each group overlapping and fading into/out of each other. The bell tones REALLY DO get lower in pitch, until the next group of notes becomes perceptible at around the 10th pulse, and it's an octave above the current group. Tricky, tricky.

As for the tone that only teens can hear, check out this link:

On some days, I can hear 21kHz, but only at very loud volumes, and only on my studio headphones (my monitors can't reproduce it).

On max volume and headphones I can only hear 18kHz. Damn, I must stop listening to loud music, I'm going deaf. :))

I don't suppose you are referring to tinnitus?

No, I was thinking to this annoying high frequency sound. It was quite popular in my childhood for someone to just start it off, and we could all clearly hear it. Since I finished school, tho, I didn't really encounter it anymore and now that I listened to it again, I realized it was gone.

As a child I thought that my parents are just kidding when they told me that they couldn't hear anything, because it was there. Now I know better :)

I'm really confused, I'm sure we are on the same page, the high-freq ringing pitch in your ear right? Tinnitus? Aka "sound of silence."

No, we are speaking of different things. That high freq sound I was talking about can be collectively heard by kids, but not adults. Tinnitus is a sound that a single person will hear, it's kind of a personal thing.
