The itch is almost irresistible but I manage to fend off the thing because it seemed too hackneyed. Similar in the vein of Fiend by Stephen Stenson, I want to write a similar drug-addled zombie apocalypse stuff but I keep thinking it will be like a cheap knock off or something

If you think you’d enjoy writing it I say go for it and do it for the fun of the process of writing it rather than with the pressure of success or making anything out of it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a cheap knock off if you liked writing it.

I decided to write too, but ended up writing nothing of consequence.
Got stock mentally with a mental block writing a fiction on future.
Fun fact I had stopped because I realized my command on English language is not up to the task.
So now I decided to write some short stories just to learn to write, but for the world of me I cannot think of a good idea to write about.

i think in creative projects you just have to create whatever *you* find cool, independently of all external factors and criteria

i sometimes make music and used to run into the same problem; once you start thinking in terms of externals you become completely paralyzed

Yeah I agree with this. I studied literature at university and wanted to be an artist as a career. Reality is that it’s brutally hard and would probably mean compromising on a lot that I like about what I create and the grit takes the fun out of it for me. I learned over time that I enjoy making art when I remove all pressure of it needing to be successful and do it for its own sake.

I’ve written short stories, short films and songs. But these days I prefer improv performing or singing/playing others music as I just see it as a way of fucking about with my mates.

Try an idea board first, (go to craft store and buy a poster board and marker or crayon) or a big art tablet of paper.
Divide the board into nine or twelve squares and number them, then fill in the overall events in a few brief words with the whole story.
Do another board with main characters, and their backgrounds.
Then, as you get flashes of ideas fill in details in any order they come. You might have boxes
and can add in supporting details to each as ideas come.

Then type it all in a computer word program with the nine or twelve chapters as you have it on the idea board.
You can change it as you go along. But now, at least you will have main characters, villains, heroes, twists, plots, surprises, mysteries and endings.
Let it develop over the years, take your time. Leave room for sequels, or miraculous recoveries for the future.

Lots of writers are extremely depressive and self critical types of people. Very harsh on themselves.

Perfectionism - everything has to be perfect or else it does not count and its crap
Idealism - every idea has to represented perfectly otherwise people will not get it
Aesthetics - if it does not sound pleasing its going to deter readers
Intelligent - If it does not sound super smart it must have been written by moron, and I am not one so I won't write it

Too many ideas - I have to get all the ideas on paper or else I did not achieve my goal creatively

Uniqueness - Its got to be something no one ever wrote before or else Ill be embarrassed and feel like beta imposter etc.

You can only focus on one thing at a time, if you try to do too many things at once its like blocking yourself, its no different from trying to hit on 5 girls at once and realizing it will fail so you kind of feel its too much.

Any improvement and development of an ability can only be done by taking part in it.
.
If you're scared that your product will be some unoriginal knock off, you should totally write and develop your writting style, explore what doesn't stick and what does.
.
I wrote a short story on wattpad about a family drama cetered around an inheritence dispute following the death of a father, it was about to be some grim and noir stuff, intertwied with some suburban infonesian culture on family tradition. I wrote it and it was pretty bad haha, too dark, style over substance type of blunder, but atleast I can identify my mistake.

Then make a cheap knock off.
The most cheaply cheap you can make! Then edit it and make it even more cheap .

Sometimes I have elaborate dreams where I do things like write books but half way through I realize that I never wrote a book before and wake up about 20 minutes later forgetting I was in the dream because it only lasts 7 seconds of realizing I never did it.

And it's always about an illustrated book that somehow I wrote and draw the storyline in a library or bookstore where it's published or something to do with I am in the locations the storyline takes place at a school.

I don't know how to draw.

And the school and library and the other locations only exist in the dream and are different each time.

^ Good move.

I read a lot of Isaac Asimov's books in my 20s/30s. I recall that in an introduction, he wrote that the key to writing is to make sure that you write something every day.

Writing a book cannot be done in one sitting. So it's the regular writing the results in a book.

Even if what you write today is complete and utter rubbish, as long as you keep writing every day, it won't always be compete rubbish. Practise makes perfect.
