Red Hugh, by Robert T. Reilly. It's a really quick read (like you could read it in a couple hours), and I don't know why, but I've always enjoyed it. It's not a complex book, but it's...I don't know. I just enjoyed it a lot. Classic knights and castles, princesses, prisoners of war, etc.

Also I like The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but who doesn't?

This is my favorite series of all time, hands down.

Stories of Your Life & Others - Ted Chiang
This is a short story anthology. Ted Chiang is a genius in my opinion, and his stories explore some really fascinating concepts.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality - Eliezer Yudkowsky
This is a fanfic (which I've never paid much attention too) telling the story of Harry Potter if he interacted with the world using the scientific method and critical thinking. I love the Harry Potter books, but strangely I like this even more.

I read the first two and the Slow Regard of Silent Things recently. He is such a good writer. I don't care what the subject is, I'll read the directions on the back of a shampoo bottle if he wrote them.

Haha same here. It's actually turned into a sort of obsession with me. I'm constantly reading his blog and listening to various interviews he does. He has a lot of interesting things to say and I like how he thinks.

During one of his interviews, he was talking about naming things in his stories and his fascination with how and why good names work. He mentions two made up words: slytherith and ogokwo and asks which word is wetter, or more suited to a river, and how everyone knew ogokwo was the more appropriate name, but he was determined to understand why. Interesting thing to think about.

I would think that's a simple one -- just whisper the words. "Ogokwo" sounds like glugging water, while "slytherith" sounds more like rustling leaves.

That's true, but why do they sound like those things? It's a made up phoneme arrangement, so what makes one intrinsically more suited to one thing and not the other?

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.
Really interesting novel that dwells in a theme that's rarely explored; obsession, concept of taboo, pedophilia. And it's amazing how Nabokov made the rpotagonist that's a pedophilic sociopath to be redeemable.
