The original idea is from Lor, so all credit to her.

This club is about anime films. The club members watch, discuss and analyze a single film for a whole week.
The members also suggest and vote for a new movie in that period.

So, to start with it, we need some ideas for the beginning.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, the discussion will never end.

What was that movie about anyway?

Re: Anime Film Club

Wait a minute, I had rather something else in mind:

1. Gathering suggestions for films
2. Make a poll
3. Watch the film with the most votes
4. Discuss and analyze the film
5. Return to 1.

Re: Anime Film Club

Awesome thread. I propose "A Wind Called Amnesia", which I've been wanting to see for a while (but I haven't so I dont know if it's actually good), the premise is interesting and should fire up some discussion.

From Wikipedia:

"The Apocalypse didn't come with a BANG. Silently, the amnesia wind swept away all of mankind's knowledge. Thousands of years of human civilization vanished overnight as people forgot how to use the tools of modern civilization - who they were - how to speak - everything. Technology decayed as mankind was instantly reduced to level of cavemen.
Now, two years later, a young man explores a nation reduced to barbarism - America. Miraculously re-educated after the cataclysm, he is accompanied by a young woman - somehow spared the obliterating effects of the amnesia wind. Pursued by a relentless killing machine, they search for those responsible for stealing their memories."

Re: Anime Film Club

Pokemon: the First Movie?

Ah, don't be cruel. Actually I saw that film in cinema. Then it was awesome, because it was Pokemon. But now...?
Just look at this: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/vi...lasses/nostalgia-critic/163-pokemon-the-movie

Also, I nominate Appleseed.

Appleseed is a four volume Cyber Punk manga written between 1985 and 1989 by Shirow Masamune, of Ghost In The Shell fame, as well as its OVA and feature film adaptations. Set in post-apocalyptic 22nd century, the story follows the Action Girl Deunan Knute and her cyborg partner and lover Briareos Hecatonchires. The two join the special forces of the Olympus city, an enclave of peaceful life on the planet devastated by the World War III (and recovering from World War IV), whose population consists equally of both normal humans and "bioroids", Artificial Humans with genetically suppressed aggressiveness who act as emotional buffer for the former.

I watched A Wind Called Amnesia and it was decent but didn't quite deliver hat it should have, so I'm taking the proposal back.

I have not watched it but it seems pretty interesting. Kind of like ghost in the shell. I'm not really into anime but I will watch anything that appeals to me.

Is it any good.

Why don't you download it onto a disk in an internet cafe and watch it at home.

Ah i see, Tasmania is somewhat of a technological backwater country, is it? Do you have VHS yet? I could always download it, watch it then tell you if it's any good.

Yeah the tazzies are a little behind, what with being at the ass end of the world an all.
Up here in Brisbane there are internet cafe's everywhere.

Anyway, Paprika is a pretty good movie, just keep in mind that it's Japanese; you may need to watch it twice before you can understand it, which is fine considering you will miss a great deal the first time through.

Re: AFC: "Paprika" from 29.3 to 5.4

I watched it last night and even though it was in English, it was still pretty hard to follow. I'm not sure whether to say it was good or not. The animation was amazing but the story was so damn weird, I had a headache by the end of it. Maybe it's like Ghost in a Shell which I had to watch twice before I understood it.

Why does anime have to be so weird, damn Japs.

Re: AFC: "Paprika" from 29.3 to 5.4

After Indiv and Vega helped me to get the subtitles working, it made a whole lot more sense.

Which, once you consider that the film didn't make much sense even then, is saying something.

It is a good film though, and entertaining is one word for it.

Understandable? not so much =P

Re: AFC: "Paprika" from 29.3 to 5.4

Could anyone here give me some advice on good anime out there. I'm not a huge fan of the stuff but I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist. It seems to me that the majority of anime consists of half dressed school girls with huge breasts taking on demons, if I want that I look at hentai.

I'd prefer something intelligent, strong plot, rounded characters, not taken place in a school. It may seem like I'm asking for a lot but does anyone have any suggestions.

The Ghost in the shell movie has all this and an attractive female protagonist whose special ability involves getting naked... but it's handled tastefully, also I believe it was done to demonstrate how values will change as a result of emerging technologies. If somebody buys their body or has it made by a team of technicians, it only makes sense that privacy isn't such an issue.

Vampire Hunter D was pretty cool too.

Re: AFC: "Paprika" from 29.3 to 5.4

I watched Ghost in a Shell twice and enjoyed it the second time round. I should have said that I'd prefer if it was a series rather than a single movie, but any suggestions are welcome.

@AKC I watched the first episode of Deathnote. Wasn't too sure at first, it seemed like it was going to be the same old school kid fighting demons thing but it turned out to be very interesting. First anime I watched where they had an INTX as the main character, still turned him into a sociopath though.

Ahh shit. :o

I'm actually watching it right now. I'm on the 4th episode. It's hard to watch again; it moved me deeply last time.

I suppose we'll mostly be discussing the symbolism (and there's a lot of it). Heh.. don't look to me to be the expert or anything. All I really know about the series is that it reached into my icy cold heart and thawed it out with its warm portrayal of humanity.

Communicator: "Perhaps this is what it means to be bound by sin. To spin in the same circle, looking for where the sin lies, and at some point losing sight of the way out."

Warm portrayal of humanity? Seems to be the opposite of I-will-never-ever-be-happy-again Saikano.

Well, I watched it and I found it kinda dull. Well now I know that I'm dead inside because the only thing I felt was boredom. The music in it was excellent though.

So some goodies for the fury not related to school...

Escaflowne (the greatest music of all time in an anime)
RahXephon (much better than NGE imo)
Now and Then, Here and There (it is outdated but has great issues)
Vandread (sci-fi/warning lots of fan service)
Grave of the Fireflies
Code Geass (I'm sure this is mentioned already)
FLCL (Holy hell in a hand basket. Have fun with this one)
Wolf's Rain

Umm...I know there are more, but I can't think of any more right now. I need to grab my collection...

So which one do you guys want to pick next? I will re-watch any of the above and discuss with you guys. I do not want to make the decision however. I hate making decisions.
