I'm thinking about the Mayan calendar and religions' belief that Christ is supposed to come to Earth for a reigning of 1,000 years of peace. Maybe the two dates are the same?

For replies, I'd like to play with the idea a little bit, not argue the existence of a god, etc. Thanks ;)

I think it is funny how fast people jump to the conclusion that the end of the calendar means the end of the world. I mean we don't really know all that much about the mayans. I don't know if this is true but I read some where that this current calendar we are on is a transition period and 2012 is the beginning of a new stage in the human existence. I don't know if there are more than one calendar is just what I read.

As far as Christian doomsayers they have "predicting" the end of the world for hundreds of years. They just found a date close to theirs to help get somesupport.

I want to believe 2012 marks beginning of a new era when people start to wake up in masses, it's already ongoing exponentially, 2012 would be sort of singularity of this in a way.

Ofc this brings all sorts of side effects, no doomsday tho :p

I have an existential map. It has "You are here" w
Nothing will happen.

To qualify this, the Mayan calendar is based on the observance of some pretty lengthly cosmic periods, and 2012 just happens to mark the point where all of these periods essentially reset back to 0. i.e. it's more or less the same as happened on New Year's Eve when the millenium ticked over - At midnight the current second, minute, hour, day, month, year, decade, century and millenium all ended at the same point. Other than a lot of cheering, drinking, firework related explosions and hookups which were regretted the next day, nothing very interesting happened.

If a dead guy reappears, alive, after nearly 2000 years then I'll be mildly surprised, congratulate him, buy him a drink and ask him what he actually meant. :D

People are crazy. They will believe anything. Say the Elenin hype on the net. Some of these people are rather good, and they manage to make coincidences believable, and ignore things. I laughed my ass off when the 'Nirubu, black star, the end of all things' burned up when the tiny comet burned up almost completely when it got too close to the sun.

However, it was a nice set up they produced, when it was still far away. That this star orbits the planet every 10000 years or so, and gravitational forces creates havoc when it passes. And this is the origin of religion supposedly, and of course, the star is intelligent, more like a ship. Disasters coming from the sky that humbles humans through devastation. All those six days black etc. It kind of make sense it's just an orbiting planet if not the writings are drunken babble.

I still have not understood if planets can orbit in such an extreme elliptical path, it seems comets can, but those are so small. I even think the orbiting planet is unlikely. Certainly a black star.

I don't believe what they say about 2012 being anything special. The Mayan clock is is based off of things that they observed, and if they observed this before then it's safe to say that we'll be fine.
