Life as an INTP

Well, I'm only 14 now, so I often think that my life would be a struggle as an INTP.
I'm also living in South Korea. People here gives so much weight to hierarchical order, appearance, etc. and that's why I consider of my future life 'a harsh struggle'.

Anyway, don't care about the words I've said before this.
How was your life as an INTP?

In my case, my father was always too bossy. He's actually doing a business so that might be a reason. When he got stressed on outside, he always came back to home at night and verbally attacked my mother and me. He didn't want to listen any kinds of advice which is making him uncomfortable. It is too obvious that he only loved men who flatters to him. He lent about $300000 in total (KRW 300,000,000) to his bad friends and family. He didn't return any of his money and some of his friends even went to jail for the suspicion of fraud. He was even tricked by his underling and got sued several times with awful reasons.

With that kind of father, I just lived my childhood with having my head on the clouds. Now I want to be a Physicist, Mathematician or a Computer Scientist because I love studying those things, but I worry about the poor social skills I have.

This was my life. Because I live in non-English country, I maybe not correct with the grammar. I hope you are not annoyed too much.

Anyway, how was yours?

Leave as soon as you can. Ever thought of that?

I think about that every single day. This is not my type of work to do, but I'll have to pretend studying while I'm in highschool because of the transcript required for the US universities.
Also highschool in Korea is just 9am-studying-lunch-studying-10pm so the transcript work would be kind of torturing my life.

As an aside, its important to note the differences in culture between an English speaking country like the US and a country like South Korea. Namely, South Korea is a society based on shame and honor. This explains that your father liked being flattered and did favors for people who made him look good on the outside. In the US, its much more internal about how we deal with "Good" and "Bad". If you do something Bad in the US, you're not going to get shunned by everyone (thought shame is still something people experience in the US), but you are more likely to feel bad yourself for doing something Bad. If you do something Good, then its likely you will feel good. It gets complicated because people like to tell how Good they are, but the basic thing is that if you do something Bad, YOU feel bad, you are not necessarily looked down upon by everyone else if you do something bad. You can do something Bad in private and even if people don't find out, you might still feel bad. I have heard that in Korea, its more about your outward appearance that makes you feel good or bad - whether people know if you do good or bad is a bigger deal over there.

This is just what I heard though so it might not be 100% accurate.

I really appreciate you for the advice, but I wonder if the topic is too much heading to me. I hope this thread to be helpful to some people, not only me.

I'm so confused whether I should answer in Korean or English, so I just chose anything. I had to memorize all the useless simple sentences (like I go to school by bus) due to do well on the exam so I don't think I learned English on school. I just read some books like 'the selfish gene' that are not translated well in Korean. Usually it was easier to read in English rather than translated Korean.

As someone from a hierarchal culture as well, I find it not easy to leave. Having the need to be in a collective isn't discarded easily.

@OP
Yeah your hierarchy (Power Distance Index) is too high even for my standards. Your father seems to be also a victim of said hierarchy based on what you shared.

Anyways, I think you could go here in the Philippines like most of your countrymen. It has a cheaper cost of living versus S. Korea and you can learn English from tutors here at a less expensive rate.

Thank you, but my father has some stereotypes about safety with some countries so it won't be easy..

I can't blame him. However, if you stick to Manila, Iloilo or Cebu then you will be safer. Just don't go to Mindanao right now.

Maybe check out the other SE Asian nations too. You might find a safe one that can teach you English as well.

It looks like you go to an international school, then.

I think I'm a little late for the advice, but I'll do it anyway.

I come from a very different country, so my advice may not be that accurate. I also have no idea of what people do on Korea. However, I'll highly recomend you to study hard. Do it until you think you know everything, and if you're doing it well then you should realize there is a lot of new stuff to learn.

Also, being a physics student it's really cool if you want to study this.

Wikipedia and online random research are your friends, if you're researching something, do it in english, not only it'll help you with the language, but there is also more info about everything.

Stick to this forum :D

Seriously, it helps with english as well (I'm a native spanish speaker), and you may read interesting stuff.

Uh, also I highly recomend you the Merriam Webster online dictionary, whenever you need to know what a word means, use it.

Unless you're searching an internet slang or another modern slang, then use the Urban Dictionary or just google it.

Good luck from the other side of the world :D

I wasn't necessarily saying it to you for advice, but just as a bit of knowledge to people who might not be aware.

I was not really sure what to say tbh because I don't know if I am INTP or not. I wanted to contribute something tho, so that is what I came up with.
