None of this shit about your plans for this weekend or what you did at work today or neighborhood gossip.. Let's talk science, philosophy, history, and politics. Subjects that are captivating.. Also, let's get to know each other.

Tell me a little bit about yourself, first, so I have more of an idea of what kind of talk and description you're looking for. o-o

What do you consider fascinating?

Okay. Ahem. Ready?

What is more important ... form or content? How does one tell the difference? It would seem if one is given the extreme, one can tell. But is there a dividing line? You have given us the form: intellectual topics. I have given you content: define form versus content better.

I chose this topic because it was suggested, whether you are aware or not, by you. I am a theoretician ... whatever that means. I injured my back a few days ago and discovered massage in the shower is making it better today. That means I can (hopefully) go out today. (Is that enough about weekend plans?) You said not to talk about that. But I am almost ready to believe if one started out by doing just that, that a topic could be pulled out of it.

Theory: If you take the most mundane "S" topic, it can be generalized to a topic that would fit the categories you have listed. Holy crappola! I gotta go out and walk the dog. I couldn't yesterday cuz of my back. Also if ya wanna get to know me, ask me a few questions. Whether I answer or not you will know more than you did before.

Synthetix, I could ask you a question about you, but I'm censoring the first one that comes to my mind.

I suggest we talk about food. While most smalltalk is boring, food is ALWAYS interesting. The reason is simple, it's FOOD. I mean, who doesn't love food? D;

Any personal favorites? <:

Do you get a kind of happiness from being sad? Where you feel down or depressed or whatever but you don't really want to change that, and in fact simultaneously like it? To a point where, as a thought experiment, you might even intentionally try to think that way so as to experience the complexity of the emotion out of curiousity and fascination? :borg:

Whilst I agree a general chat would be good, there are forum categories for each of those things already. I doubt you'll get anything different here than elsewhere.

I wholeheartedly agree with that little theory, and it is, in fact, one I live by. That's what I had to do when, among countless other scenarios, I was confronted with certain females I wanted to share a night with, but found that our interests were somewhat, or rather, completely different. With practice, one can easily, I think, attack the subject of lipstick brands in such a way as to make it interesting, hopefully, for both parties.

Also, where I spend most of my time, there are practically no one with any intellectual interests, so I've had to rely, as far as I could, on the BigApple theorem in order to survive. I've found though, that with some individuals, it is simply impossible to turn any conversation into something that would also interest me (and I'm really not that picky..I think.. but I can't say with epistemic certainty).

Well, yes. Feeling sad/depressed is more natural to me. When in such feelings I will magnify them rather than suppress them, because it feels better the deeper I go.

Is this Facebook? Shit. *closes the page and deletes the browser, cache, memory cache, bashes the hard drive with a hammer, burns the shattered parts with a blowtorch, builds a rocket and sends the ashes to space, buys a new hard drive.*

It'll just happen again.

Protecting yourself against in(s)anity is a severe and lifelong commitment.

I live off a steady diet of fingernails, coffee and cigarettes.

Sometimes I'll absently also eat the paper stick attached to the lollipop.

(My parents taught me never to waste any part of the animal.)

So... Who stirs their hot drinks with a spoon clockwise and who stirs them anti-clockwise?

I had to think about this.

I think I stir clockwise.
Most of the time.

But then sometimes I reverse too.
I like to play with the swirls when I put a small drop of creamer in my coffee.

My diet consists mostly of meat (with the fat), milk, protein, and potatoes with a little bit of veggies here and there. My reason for this is that humans don't have much of a fermentation organ for digesting veggies and fruits like most mammals who eat vegetation. The appendix is a vestigial organ that reminds us of our adaptation to a mostly meat diet. That is what we used to use to ferment plant-based foods. The only problem is that (In America at least) they have over-processed all the dairy and take the fat out of everything.

Ever since I started this diet I have become much more mentally stable as well as more intelligent if I do say so myself. Haha. Also, I have much more energy and I'm pretty sure my testosterone levels have skyrocketed as well.

And a lot of money, hard drives ain't cheap!

Well, solid state maybe... platter drives are what, $60-70 for a 1.5T now?

I remember shelling out $100 or more for a 40Mb hard drive in 1991. *doh*

The biggest problem with the modern diet is the focus on cheap carbs. The positive effects you have experienced are probably mostly due to cutting out grains. We can't digest parts of the grain properly -our bodies produce antibodies in response to gluten- which aside from causing coeliac disease in a small number of people, has also been associated with IBS, chronic fatigue, and susceptibility to other allergies. I'm a proponent of the hunter-gatherer diet, which is similar in some ways to the traditional "balanced diet", but all the calories from grains and other processed sugars and starches are replaced by greens, roots, nuts and similar things. These type of things are actually very easy for us to digest as long as you pick the right things. The hunter-gatherer diet is the one we evolved on and includes everything we need in the right proportions. One other thing to note is that it is not just the total amount of sugar you eat which is important, but the ratios of different sugars also impact health. The traditional balanced diet is too rich in glucose for example, and the American diet has recently shifted to quite shocking levels of fructose.

There is one problem with the high-protein diet, it has been shown to accelerate ageing and increase susceptibility to some diseases. Don't take that as a discouragement though, you are probably still far healthier than much of the population.

My diet is absolutely terrible, although I have managed to cut out some of the chocolate and other sweet things this year.

Source?

A high protein diet tend to increase concentration and clarity of mind and energy. But there are other protein sources. We can't all eat large quantities of meat. It would mean more land to feed animals and less land to grow other types of food. It's less efficient. There wouldn't be food for everyone. It's less environmentally friendly. Food for animals often comes from rain forests which we are dependent on to trap carbon dioxide and keeping a general biological diversity.

Link

Some health risks regarding a high consumption of meat is controversial, personally I am currently convinced limiting the intake somewhat is more healthy. (Based on various reading). (Calorie restriction in general tend to prolong different species' life, indicating the same could work for us).

Eating various types of vegetables, nuts and fruits makes it easier to consume more vitamins and minerals. Especially nuts are good for the brain.

Crisps or fries? I'm sorry, the english / american use of the word just confuses me D;

I live off a steady diet of fingernails, coffee and cigarettes.
Any tips for someone who wants to go ahead and learn to drink coffee? I tend to live on sugar whenever I need to, but in weeks as this one, I doubt caffeine would do me any harm. It's just that I don't like the taste of coffee very much, I know i should just get used to it, but hey.

I know the question wasn't addressed to me, but I would start with ice coffee.
Or, you could woman yourself up and just go with the real thing. I always used to hate coffee, but strangely enough, it only took one all nighter where I didn't have any access to tea before I came to, if not like it, accept it.

Why would you want to learn to drink coffee? If you like it then drink it. If you don't, then don't.

Bad for you anyway*. Better off without it. Water all the way bitches.

*If you have it with milk, sugar, cream or anything else. Black coffee is 'okay'.

I'm not going to discredit that you might be healthier and more energetic, but only because you've cut out processed foods and grains. I tell everyone who wants to lose weight that the first thing they should do is stop eating bread, pasta, rice and any other grains. But we definitely are not primarily carnivorous.

- Our stomachs produce 1/10th the amount of hydrochloric acid that other carnivores do. Meat actually putrefies in our stomachs if it stays long enough and, our bodies are actually terribly ineffective at digesting the proteins in meat. It takes us 3-5 days to digest meat, it takes carnivores roughly 1-1.5.

- Our saliva is alkaline, designed for dissolving starches. Carnivores have acidic saliva, for digesting meat.

- Our jaws are not set, they move in multiple directions to grind down rough plant material. A carnivore has a set jaw, it moves only up and down to provide stability when tearing at flesh.

- We can't eat meat raw, and we generally flavour with herbs and spices because it tastes better. Eating raw meat is sickening to us. Actual carnivores (and omnivores) eat meat raw.

- Our teeth are definitely not carnivorous. Yes, we have canines, but they are really quite pathetic. Compare the canines on a human to a cat, dog or bear for example. Theirs are sharp and are good at rending and tearing. We can't even eat a cooked steak without cutlery.

- Carnivores have short intestines, any meat that isn't dissolved passes through the digestive system quickly. In longer intestines, it stays long enough to putrefy.

- Bowel walls of a carnivore are flat. Humans have pouches in which meat can get caught and stay for a long period of time due to the weak acidity of our digestive systems. Can cause illness and high-protein diets have been linked to colon cancer.

- Humans sweat through skin pores. All carnivores sweat through the tongue only and have no skin pores.

- Blood is attractive to carnivores. In taste, scent and sight. Seeing the blood of an animal is disgusting to a human.

Minuend is correct in asserting that high protein diets are linked to sickness and many other health problems.

Not trying to shit on your dieting choices here, just giving you some information if you're serious about having a healthy, balanced diet. Obviously removing processed foods has been good for you. I'd recommend it to anyone else as well.

I still eat meat 2-3 times a week, but only once in a day and never a large portion.

Haven't been to a doctor for three years.

Got about a third of the way through so far.
I think the general gist of what she is saying is correct, but she is grossly uninformed and opinionated. For example she is saying no fruits or vegetables contain any vitamin A, that we can't digest protein in plants, and that there are no fats in any plants.

I don't think I'll start a through analysis of that 27 minute video. She probably has some points, but overall I think she uses the wrong approach. Problems arise when people base what they should do solely on what their ancestors used to do.

Grains, bread and pasta, like redbaron said, are more likely to be the sinners when it comes to disease than vegetables, fruits and nuts.

Actually, could you ask more specific questions? That video is just too huge if I were to address it all I would probably have to write like 20 word pages. I didn't watch it all, though, because that lady does seem very uninformed.

I should probably add that most of the arguments she uses, are identical to those used by high fat, low carb followers. Not that it is a bad or a good thing, just a note that one can easily bend the "truth" to support pretty much anything.

I'd also like to add that drinking an adequate amount of water is going to help as well. I occasionally drink a black coffee.

Basically, foods that are alkalising are the foods you need to eat. This doesn't mean you only eat alkaline foods, there are acidic foods that have high concentrations of minerals and vitamins that when broken down have an alkalising effect on the body.

Things like lemons, avocado, apples and berries.

Potatoes are not bad for you per se, but they're basically a starch-bomb. Tonnes of carbohydrates. However they've also got some protein, fibre (skin), vitamin C, B6 and potassium. I think of them as kind of a 'filler' food. I eat them regularly, but in small portions. Same goes for carrots, a lot of nutritional value but should be eaten in moderation.

I didn't mean to adress it to anyone in specific, I simply got the thought by higs mentioning coffee. Not sure why you said woman yourself up, i'm male.

To answer this and somewhat kantor's end, I'm awful at waking up, while I'm often nocturnal, getting out of bed isn't one of my strengths. During rather 'busy' weeks, I wouldn't mind having something to fall back on that has more effects than sugar. Also, I'm sure some of you can understand this, but sometimes my mind just feels tired, regardless of sleep.

I'm sure coffee isn't going to fix this on the long run, but that's not required. No matter howmuch I put my body through in random periods of busy craziness, i'll always give it sufficient rest soon enough after. That being said, I doubt even that is healthy, then again what is. Anyways, I need something to keep me alert and awake whenever I need it. Must get the most out of that single last minute (well more like hour / day). Also, I hate energy drinks even more than I hate coffee.

Besides, i'll learn to drink it, won't hate it forever (I think?). Anyways, to someone who wants to learn to drink it, how do I go around it? Start easy with milk and sugar added, or simply get over it and straight to black? Teach me the ways of the caffeine addiction.

As far as food goes, how about i'll eat pretty much anything I feel like eating, regardless of how healthy it is? D;

PS: @Minuend, i'm nowhere near 5+ cups of coffee a day. Also, I'd try to keep it as something to fall back on, not something to go with daily. I usually just sleep when I feel sleepy, but sometimes sleep isn't an option.

The effects of coffee varies between individuals. I don't feel anything at all when drinking coffee. I just like the taste and something warm to drink. Of course, coffee has an effect on my body, I just don't notice it. Same with my parents, my mother drinks coffee right before bedtime and falls asleep with no problems.

There's also a study claiming that the alert feeling of coffee in the morning is rather because you combat withdrawal symptoms than caffeine having an effect. This is not the same article I read some time ago, but link

Edit: actually, when I need a boost of energy I turn to sugar because from that I do notice change. Not very healthy, though.

I'm doing the same, for now. While it works if i'm not on high sugar food already for an evening, it won't give me the rush for a week. It'll keep me awake, not aware. :(

You can say man yourself up to a woman, can't you?
Man yourself up is a figure of speech playing to the common associations of man with qualities of strength, determination, willpower, courage - I was simply making a statement more in tune with post-feministic writing, albeit, for comical effect (satire), even though it wasn't particularly funny. So, ehm.. yeah..

I started by basically making extremely milky coffee with so much sugar. Oh my god. So much sugar. It was basically sugar and milk with a splash of coffee, so I drank that for a few months and then gradually diminished the other ingredients until it was just coffee. Now I take it black and can't stand it otherwise. Weird, I suppose it's an acquired taste. I used to hate it.

Come to think of it, yeah it could be a French thing. Coffee is good in France, smoking is also in the culture And... you bite your nails because you're addicted to the cigarettes and the coffee maybe? :D

I've always believed that being able to drink coffee right before falling asleep is less to do with the individuals metabolism, but instead is just a sign of addiction. This is only anecdotal evidence too, but most people I know who regularly drink coffee or tea in the evening are always quite lethargic during the day.

I've developed routine where I give up caffeine for a day every week or two. Doing this I seem to be able to keep up a relatively high intake without developing much of a tolerance or dependence on it. I've only done this for a couple of years though, so as I do it for longer and particularly as I get older I expect it may stop working unless I drink less or abstain for longer periods.

I woman'd up, and bought myself random insta-make coffee. Now i'm sitting at my desk staring at the cup wondering if i'll drink it, and howmuch it'll help.

If black is too awful, i've got heaps of sugar to add. What do you do when it stops dissolving and just adds on the bottom of your cup? D:

 Not instant coffee!!! Blasphemy!

Ummm...Oh yeah, just don't drink the sugar paste at the bottom :D Make sure you add milk. You should try and order capuccino's in a café, I found those very easy to drink from the start. With sugar that is.

I'm sorry for the blasphemy, forgive a beginner. I did drink it, it does taste awful, and i'm not noticing huge effects, but i'm not falling asleep either. I don't have milk here, I do have sugar. What's the point of adding sugar if it wont dissolve anymore D: ? As for cafés, when I have the time for them, I don't need coffee. And I tend to drink beer there anyways.

Edit : forum says you've been posting with internet explorer. We're even on the blasphemy.

As far as buying stuff to make coffee goes (as a coffee machine, etc), I'll consider that once i actually ... you know, don't think it tastes worse than pretty much anything else but coke vanilla? D:

Instant is indeed foul.

If you want to try proper coffee without going to a cafe, the easiest method is a coffee cone, and a bag of decent quality grounds.

Just to emphasize, I focus more on eating as much fat as possible. I try to get over 50% of my calories from it and I don't pay as much attention to carbs and proteins since they automatically come with it. Protein can be converted into glucose and I eat tubers as well. I have read many research papers regarding this.

I am really athletic (exercise 5 or more times a week) with only 3% body fat and great muscle tone. I also do intermittent fasting with my eating window at 4-6 hours every day. Maybe this allows my body to digest much better, but I'm pretty sure a high-fat diet is what humans were mostly adapted to since our body can convert fat into keytone bodies which the brain is better at metabolizing and also have 7 calories per gram instead of 4 calories per gram from carbs which the brain would be using on a low-fat diet.

Also, our teeth did not adapt so much because we evolved with tools to cut up meat. Fat and bone marrow actually carry a lot of nutrients inside them as well as other major organs do. I have been on this diet for 3 months now and I've had no problems so far.

Intermittent fasting is a big part of it though, so perhaps that makes the difference.

Most likely, it encourages the body to stay in "repair" mode mode which means it prefers using fat to storing it. It also cuts the levels of insulin-like growth factor.

Why the hell does the forum bother to show what server you're using? I'd never noticed that, this place is weird...
