So some English books were added to a library a few kilometers away. I think it's about 100 books or so. What would you recommend for a fellow INTP? I've never read any books, as I'm not interested in the school literature, plus it wasn't in English, so I've never read any books that we had to read in school...

I know that I would not like any romance story, or anything that involves werewolves or vampires. I'm not a huge fan of horror movies, so I assume that the same applies for horror books.

I could give some TV shows and movies examples, as I've seen LOTS of them, but I'm really bad with remembering titles sometimes... But anyway, I'd like to have a paper with a few titles on it when I go to the library on Monday.

YOU'VE NEVER READ ANY BOOKS????

YOU'VE NEVER READ ANY BOOKS!!!!!!

Can you get the list of the hundred or so?

Oh jesus. You've never read any books and you want to read some from a list of a hundredish without knowing what those hudredish are at all?

This is what you need to do.

1. Go to the library.

2. Get the list of English books.

3. Come back here and post it and I will tell you what is worth it on that list (and hopefully there will be some good authors on that list)

I want to make you a list of authors to look for while you are there, but one hundred books is very limited and god knows what is available with only one hundred and I could only offer a couple very obvious authors that would likely make it on that list for being genius writers of immortal works. I guess, if you see any John Steinbeck, Aldous Huxley, Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, J.D. Salinger those authors, off the very top of my head, are all pretty much worth it and have a good chance of being available.

You need just just get the list of books available and post it and I (and I hope others too) can recommend what is good on it.

Actually, that first list I gave up there, that should be the secondary list of what to do, primary list of what to do is as follows:

1. Go to the Library.

2. Browse books.

3. Find one or two or three or four that have titles that grab you and synopsis that intrigue you.

4. Read them.

5. Come back here and give us your recommendations!

YOU'VE NEVER READ ANY BOOKS????

YOU'VE NEVER READ ANY BOOKS!!!!!!

OMG! You never read any books? Are you sure you're an INTP? ;)
What do you do then, if you don't read books?

I haven't. I'm only interested in books in English, and all I could get (without money) was books in my language. In other words, I haven't had a possibility of reading anything, unless I'd read it in my language.

Well when my PC was good enough, I used to play lots and lots of games, but then I ran out of them, including oldies from early '90s. Then I started watching movies and TV shows, hundreds of them, even the shitty ones, even the ones rated for 2 or 3 on IMDB sometimes. And now I've ran out of that too, I still find a movie but it's getting boring and I usually don't remember anything. It's like being drunk all the time, I don't know what I was doing for the past few months, I simply can't recall anything.

So... I'm looking for a job now, although I've just finished high-school, so it's hard to get a job that I could bear, and looking for things to do that don't require money. A job would earn me just enough money to buy basic poor quality food, by the way, this country's got the lowest average salary in EU.

Clear? :D Good. :smoker:

Now... Let's see now. I see an announcement that they'll gonna bring in around 300 extra books in English. But that includes stuff like "learn English in 10 steps" or "English teacher's guide," etc..

John Steinbeck:
Of Mice And Men
The Grapes of Wrath
The Pastures of Heaven
The Red Pony The Pearl

Aldous Huxley:
Brave New World

Ray Bradbury:
The Illustrated Man
Fahrenheit 451

George Orwell - nothing.

J.D. Salinger:
Nine Stories
The Catcher In The Rye

The Pearl, Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World are all what can be called 'Transformation Tales', revolving around a male protagonist that goes on a personal journey of enlightenment in the face of society's faults and ignorance, striving to rise above the masses and the inner turmoil and achieving this despite becoming outcasts, or more of outcasts, in the process and without realising they are entering upon this journey to begin with, they all face the tragic results of their own personal growth while society remains the same.

Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World could both be classified as futuristic sci-fi and are definitely worth the read.

The Pearl is more of an emotional tale of poverty and greed featuring a poor indigenous man and his small family and the tragic fate that befalls them when great fortune come their way and the men higher up in society become envious and try to steal from the man what he has earned for their own. It is a very short but worthwhile read.

All three books are very well written with unique and thought provoking writing styles. And are all easy reads well worth the time invested. They are the sort of books that you will take something away from and feel your own subtle inner changes after having read.

I'm really happy that you are interested in expanding your mind with some literature, even if it is only out of boredom. That you want to read some good books.

If you can get a more comprehensive list and post it, I am more than willing to make suggestions based on the authors available.

Once you get going you will get a good idea of the authors and styles you really like and can find other authors and books that will interest you more easily.

Okay, got a paper with some book names on it. I've also written down "American Gods by Neil Gaiman - what is your opinion on it, if you've read it?

I've been interested in reading something since I've heard about A Game of Thrones. Before that, I just didn't think about books, as I didn't like anything in my language... I've lied, though, that I don't read books because there are no books in English in 9th and 10h grades, when someone asked me if I've read The Lord of The Rings. I guess I might've had an idea that I would read books back then.

This time, it's mostly out of boredom, although I'd like to read some books before writing myself, to see how the dialogues work in English and all without reading boring grammar rules. I still to date don't know a single grammar rule, or what does "Present Simple" mean, and I don't want to.

I don't think I'll be able to get a list, as I'm too lazy to spend two hours writing down every title and author, my handwriting is really bad, and when I write in a "better" way, I write slowly. I will look through the books, but I won't remember much afterwards, most likely.

Currently, I'm sure to try Fahrenheit, Brave New World and I'm unsure about The Pearl, as I'm not really interested in reading something like that. I'm kinda bored of scenarios like that, I've seen two or three movies like that recently.

The Pearl is really short, maybe only 150 pages, and well worth it to get a good idea of Steinbeck's writing style (which is one of the most beautiful ever, he truly is a master story teller) to decide if one cares for the style before one attempts to delve into some of his longer works like Of Mice and Men or The Grapes of wrath. The synopsis I gave was pretty generic actually, but because of some violent brutality that happens that is of a more emotional nature than typical I thought some sort of heads up about that was a good idea. It is definitely not your typical tale however.

Fahrenheit 451 is one of my favorite books ever. I don't think I have met anyone who didn't at least enjoy reading it, if not outright loved it. Both it and Brave New World are rather horrific if you really contemplate the metaphors of society that they bring across.

I have not read and Neil Gaiman that I am recalling right now, but I have heard good things.

Have fun. :)

*Edit- Of Mice and Men is not very long either, I don't know why I said it was. I think I was thinking of East of Eden for some reason.

I'm reading Kafka's Metamorphosis right now. It's good, but in the first chapter I've already found a serious mistake in Kafka's plot line. The book is worth reading just to see if you can find it. Anyone else catch it?
