so i was thinking about joining the FBI or CIA after college and was wondering if you guys though a intp would do good as a federal agent or spy?

i was also thinking that if i dont feel up to par when i get my bachelors, i may just go for my maters or doctors degree and become a political analyst.

iam in my sophomore year of college so i still have some years to go.

so hand over your opinions!

as you no doubt have noised, i will need to work on my grammar and spelling.

It depends on the department within these agencies.

Too much work. I'd rather have a job that doesn't take over my life.

Actually, I haven't "noised" much of your bad grammar and spelling at all until now. :)

But seriously, it could be a great idea, especially if you were an analyst, or investigating stuff. With a job, I'd prefer either a job that consumes my life that I enjoy, or something very low maintenance so I can do other things in my free time.

I started off looking for an international relations major in college with thoughts of joining either the CIA or State Dept. I was about 3 years into it when communism fell in the SU and east Europe and suddenly I wasn't all that exited about it anymore.

Ghost1986 expects himself to be the next James Bond or Jack Bauer. JB are the initials for both...weird.

i have an interest in large scale protective jobs. i would not be happy being a city or county cop. but being state or federal police would make me happy. i like to feel important. i think i have an inferiority complex.

An INTP would suit sabotage, espionage & assasination; actual "spy" work would require social skills.

A data analisyst is the most likely job off field.

yeah i though about the social skills thing. i tend to do fine in most areas but if i need to get close to someone fast, iam screwed. i would assume a federal agent would be the same as a spy so far as social skills go. it may just be better for me to get my doctors degreee and think my way to success.

I personally have much better social skills when I treat it as part of an act, or part of my occupation. For whatever reason, I can't seem to pull off social skills for my personal benefit. Spies are all about putting up facades and being a "chameleon" right?

It always cracks me up how people write something, and I don't notice any errors, not anything worth noting at least, then at the end they apologize for spelling and grammar and completely mess up that part.

It would not surprise me for infiltrating spies to often be ESTPs.

Maybe INTPs could do counter espionage, we're not easy to fool.

Hypothetically, on an average basis, the spy and anti-spy would counterbalance each other, creating an even chance for either to be the victor. It would be a coin flip.

Spy would be tough. From what I understand, you have a full time "normal" job and then have to spy afterward. That would wear me out, probably very mundane. Also, I hear the pay isn't so great. To do this, you'd probably need to be a big utilitarian, cuz logistically it doesn't seem to be worth it. But maybe that is just what they tell people so that they only get really dedicated ppl.

Federal Agent idk.

Actually the government has some pretty neat jobs, although most spying is done electronically nowadays. You might go ahead and approach the CIA while you're in school, but you can kiss the FBI off as a prospect, if you have even smoked pot once...

If history teaches us anything, it's that we can't trust the government.

Government controlled anything is crap.

"Free Men Govern Themselves!"

and if they don't Big Brother steps in...

The horribly ironic thing is that the government does such a lousy job 'controlling' anything, once It is given the power of Control by the citizens.

The government is in charge of controlling crime, so does crime cease? The government is empowered to stop the flow of illegal drugs/immigrants, does the flow lessen? The government is responsible for the quality of public education... (Nuf said)

You can not trust the government To Govern, merely to oppress on occasions...

the governments do a lot better job when they stop listening to their populace. you can not expect a country to be successful when it listens to its civilians.

guess it all comes down to wither you prefer dealing with people or systems. i prefer systems. i simply do not trust people one damn bit.

During the hiring process for the FBI, they have people take a polygraph test which has questions involving drugs. Are you sure that they would decline an individual based on the fact that they have taken drugs?

I have a young relative who works for the FBI, and she really enjoys her job (which is at a desk, not in the field). She said it is frustrating not to be able to discuss what she does, and of course she has to wear a suit to the office, and they are very strict about cell phones and other security issues. If you can live with that, she says the good parts are the friendly, enthusiastic people she works with, and the feeling of doing something worthwhile. Travel can be a plus or a minus, depending on how much you like it, but she has been on a few business trips for her job.

I would think that the department you worked for and how well you got along with your boss would matter much more than whether you are an INTP. I suggest you check out their websites for employment information, see what they are looking for, and maybe even see if they have internships (I have no idea if they do). If you are smart, dedicated, and professional, with a very clean background, I can't think of any reason not to try it.

yeah well we could be, but i think we'd need to be more there... more sensing and 'in-the-zone'. though i would hate to work for the government. thats like working for your enemy. maybe be a private assasin or spy. something like that.

What, being "talented liars" isn't enough, so now we have to be spies?

I think you guys are a lot better at imagining things than actually doing them.
