I just want to say it is voluntary, free for everyone and free enterprise at it's best. Capitalism trys to give people what they want and apparently Facebook is what they want. Another point, no government, no government, no governemnt etc.

The main reason I use facebook is cause I like the random news updates I get from a few pages, and while I could check all the news websites individually, it's kind of nice how they all get aggregated in FB based on what I like. Unfortunately I have to scroll through lots of pointless bullshit like the guy I made the mistake of friending and now he posts four dozen updates a day of himself smiling into his camera phone. Like anyone on Earth really wants to indulge his narcissism. He won't be lasting much longer.

That's the real problem: facebook's material is user-generated, so it's only worthwhile if you know people that post interesting stuff. Unfortunately most people would rather post pointless bullshit than anything halfway interesting. I think I may just delete all but one or two of the people on my friend's list and use it as a news feed. The one or two I'll keep are the ones who actually have worthwhile updates/links/articles to post occasionally.

I'd recommend iGoogle for your predicament. Load plenty of news modules and enjoy.

Face Book is merely a tool. A tool that seemingly allowed the interrelations between individuals of certain types to apply their social rituals to the digital format. Don't hate the tool, hate the people.

Not necessarily, it compounds the stupidity of people. It helps people put less effort into socializing so that they can express every stupid little detail of their lives. Although, people will always find ways to do this, hating facebook is merely hating a less-desirable trend of socialization... which is basically what you were saying. The argument would be that facebook is providing something which is unique and could/would not be found else-where. (HIGHLY UNLIKELY,Proxy has a better[subj->self] point)

Or you could take a moment to read my original post that stated the 5 reasons why I don't like it?

I don't think he's referring to your why you despise the blue network, I think he's talking about blame on network vs. people as claws was talking about proxy.... although I think the real problem is that I'm not refreshing the flipping page....

Facebook does make it easier for people to be stupid and/or hurtful in various ways they otherwise couldn't (in many cases), but then you could say that's a good thing because that way we can finally see what people are all about. That is, what people will do with such a tool. It's like one big social experiment is going on and it fascinates me. It seems to be revealing just how self-absorbed people are, as well as how people wish to be seen when given the ability to 'fake' it. Seeing how people choose to advertise themselves when given almost endless choices is one reason I occasionally like to look at random profiles. I also like to see if people have the same interests as mine so I can feel good about myself.

I've also learned that apparently facebook is often used to facilitate infidelity. I'd hate to think someone is only with me because they lack the sufficient technology to find someone else. Of course she'd never dump me if she lived in a cave, but that would be meaningless, right? I mean, isn't this tool essentially making people's true motivations more apparent? I think that's a good thing.

Sounds like that's relativity. Isn't life one big social experiment? I think if you immersed yourself in the social culture of the youth you'd find the same treacherous stuff on Facebook. I do understand where you're coming from, but basically what you're saying is that it makes it easier for unsocial people to get a glimpse at the lives of social people.

^ Well yes it does that, but it also makes it easier for 'social people' to manipulate others and/or the way others view them, as well as allowing 'unsocial people' to do the same.

Of course, I'm not saying facebook and similar tools actually make people what they are. They don't create 'bad' behavior, they facilitate it.

I think I missed this part. You're right, some of the more "socially-inclined people" use Facebook solely as a means to gain intelligence. I think it just shows how contentious humans are at heart for being survivalists. It's kind of funny though how everyone spies on each other.

I would agree with most of the things you have said. But at the same time I would like to put forward the idea that it is necessary to put up a front in life for the majority of the population. It used to simply be a couple of well spun sentences in a resume but now that workplaces are using the internet to find out whether their up and coming employees are adequate (and I assure you that they do, and in fact companies have been made under the profession of cyber-stalking applicants) people's lies need to become more and more all-encompassing.
Honestly though; I have far too many Facebook profiles in order to excel at crappy little games that still manage to be addictive and it is about time that I shut them down.

I thought the OP was funny. I picked up the sarcasm right away. Was kinda surprised at all the serious responses.

Some people do whore themselves on facebook a bit too much tho. And then there is the intp in me that wants to correct spelling errors or factual inaccuracies in some people's updates. :smoker:
