The main reason I use facebook is cause I like the random news updates I get from a few pages, and while I could check all the news websites individually, it's kind of nice how they all get aggregated in FB based on what I like. Unfortunately I have to scroll through lots of pointless bullshit like the guy I made the mistake of friending and now he posts four dozen updates a day of himself smiling into his camera phone. Like anyone on Earth really wants to indulge his narcissism. He won't be lasting much longer.
That's the real problem: facebook's material is user-generated, so it's only worthwhile if you know people that post interesting stuff. Unfortunately most people would rather post pointless bullshit than anything halfway interesting. I think I may just delete all but one or two of the people on my friend's list and use it as a news feed. The one or two I'll keep are the ones who actually have worthwhile updates/links/articles to post occasionally.
Face Book is merely a tool. A tool that seemingly allowed the interrelations between individuals of certain types to apply their social rituals to the digital format. Don't hate the tool, hate the people.
Or you could take a moment to read my original post that stated the 5 reasons why I don't like it?
Sounds like that's relativity. Isn't life one big social experiment? I think if you immersed yourself in the social culture of the youth you'd find the same treacherous stuff on Facebook. I do understand where you're coming from, but basically what you're saying is that it makes it easier for unsocial people to get a glimpse at the lives of social people.Facebook does make it easier for people to be stupid and/or hurtful in various ways they otherwise couldn't (in many cases), but then you could say that's a good thing because that way we can finally see what people are all about. That is, what people will do with such a tool. It's like one big social experiment is going on and it fascinates me.
^ Well yes it does that, but it also makes it easier for 'social people' to manipulate others and/or the way others view them, as well as allowing 'unsocial people' to do the same.
Of course, I'm not saying facebook and similar tools actually make people what they are. They don't create 'bad' behavior, they facilitate it.
