Words are just symbols/sounds/gestures attached to things and all carry a personal emotional weight to it.
If I say the word "cucumber", you may:
-say yummy (if you like cucumbers)
-have an indigestion (just by thinking of it)
-cry (if you ever had one stuck up to your ass)
Unfortunately, there are many people around acting like every word is like a cucumber up to their asses.
This is an interesting thread. Despite some usage of vulgar language, it is about people's reactions to words and it should be part of the Psychology section.

That is what I experience when someone says "cucumber".

I hate fucking cucumbers.

Even just cucumber juice on my salad leaves me tasting fucking cucumbers for a few days after.

Cucumbers linger.

Hearing the word Fuck is actually an aphrodisiac to some ears. I knew someone that said they loved the word.

I remember stumbling upon information that indicated that the classification of words as profane was largely a class thing. The poorer, lower classes in England, for example tended to use more Germanic words like "fuck," whereas the fancier "refined" individuals had other Latin (French) terms to use.
