Why do Emo kids deny being Emo?

this confuses me.
of all the emos i have met not one has claimed/admitted to being an emo.
they all claim to be individual, they say they listen to some metal band which somehow makes them not emo. but a couple of metal bands to claim they aren't emo is an emo trait. i dont see how 'individuals' can listen to the same music, wear the same clothing and act exactly the same.

there are four groups in school, the normal, average kids. the chavs, the 'Individuals' and the individuals.
the 'individuals' are the most irritating because the idiotic prigs honestly believe they are different, THEY ARE NOT!!!
the individuals (like me and my friends) aren't really a group because we are anti-social bastards who are completely different to each other.

the only thing worse than an Emo, is an Emo that denies being an Emo. worse than any Chav or Fuckwit, war or disease.

By 'Emo' I assume you mean the social clique-- listening to heavy metal, dressing in black, dyeing your hair black (and straightening it, I think) and such? I could distinguish between an Emo and a Punk, or between an Emo and a... gah... I dunno. I don't know a whole hell of a lot about social thingies. :p

IMO... Some people want to belong, as well as feel different. To people who are looking in from the outside, they might look all the same, but in a group of like-minded people small differences do make more difference than in a larger group of more diverse people.

I agree that it's annoying when people say they're not a member of a group (but they clearly are), but to them the feeling of belonging to a group and the feeling of solidarity might be more important than the desire to be different and unique. I mean, face it, even if they're not unique, they're still a minority. In a small way, they're still 'different', even if they're not different to each other. They might want to rally around each other instead of standing on their own. Even I would agree that it's nice to have someone beside you who you share aspects of your personality and outlook with. *shrug*

How Pathetic. why must some people need this, it really is sad that 90% people at least need to 'belong'.

although what you have said is spot on, sagewolf.

Heh... it's like "the Emo Song."

"You'd be non-conformist too, if you looked just like me..."

...lol. That's a bit contradictory, no?

Many people are happy to acknowledge they're INTPs here at least. Perhaps the descriptions and associations through the term are nicer.

lol, touche? hm.... But, anyway, I must say I disagree with the comment, "superior" minds. At least in the way it is used here. Superior in what way? This is too general.

But, you did pick up something of my motives in my last post. Belonging. Would this forum not be a form of belonging, even if on a more intellectual level?

And, besides, humans are social creatures, they need one another to survive as a species. Its no wonder people need belonging.

And cheers for procrastination!

My intentions are to use the collective minds of INTPs to construct a spacecraft and fly away from this terrible place known as Earth.

I felt compelled to share since I haven't really mentioned anything 'emo' people or belonging.
People call me emo but not because I wear shirts with bands on them, wear mascara (they do that, right?), or even listen to the same music. They call me emo because I'm loud one day and extremely quiet the other. And by that definition, fuck it, I AM emo.

My brother is a 'non-conformist' meaning he blurts out "I don't like it because it's too popular" or something along those lines. I gag because there are millions of other people with the same mentality and who have said the same thing meaning they have already conformed into a group that ignorantly 'non-conforms'. And considering the billions of people on this earth, I'm sure there are a lot of emo kids who don't admit how emo they are and with that have already sealed their label.

I forgot the point of this but all I'm saying is people are people and we all fit into a certain category or another. You being angry about it can very much fall into a category of its own. Me saying this crap will be filed under 'pretentious faggot' in no time.

People call me weird instead of a non-conformist. I walk around with multi-coloured clothing. For example, a bright orange t-shirt with black trousers and a dark green overcoat.

"Define Emo"

superior- the more erudite among us. but the main reason for 'superior' is my modesty. i originally just wrote 'like' minds but this sounded as if i was as inteligent as any. i am not. i hate feeling cocky

belonging- i see there being a difference. I, at some point, may desire friendship (used loosely) but not need. i could live without.
what is the difference between having sex every once in a while and Nymphomania?
ask yourself.

Emo- jet black hair, tendency to speak in text talk and use the word 'like' out of context. say they are massive music fans when they have only half a gigabyte of mainstream rock. 'Twilight' is their favourite film. think 'Mosha' music is a real genre and so desparately protest their indivuality.

The world's very large. Yes, I am easy to spot, but I have to within range. You will spread the word for people to look out for me and report sightings? You could attempt to ascertain my location through this method.

I agree. they are just as bad and my problems are the same with non-cons as with emo. I am a big My Chem fan, but this dosen't shape me, it is just music. it is the listening to the music because others are that is wrong. not because I think the singer is 'Hot'

the only thing worse than an Emo, is an Emo that denies being an Emo. worse than any Chav or Fuckwit, war or disease.

Unless you actually know of the existence of an emo who doesn't deny being emo, that's a pretty redundant thing to say. <.<

Obviously emos deny being emo because they don't want everyone to treat them like shit. In effect, admitting being emo to someone who isn't 'understanding' or emo themselves would be counter-productive to the reason they're emo in the first place. The visage tells people they're weak, depressed and need love and sympathy. To their peril, it takes a pretty weak person to give a shit...

My brother is a 'non-conformist' meaning he blurts out "I don't like it because it's too popular" or something along those lines.

I blurt that out sometimes because things remind me of mob mentality and little people with green hair following each other off cliffs and it repulses me.

"Define Emo"

Emo- jet black hair

Um, some people just happen to either have jet black hair, or like how they look with jet black hair. Example: Would you classify Harry Potter as "Emo"?

Also, there are LOTS of "Emo" people who do NOT have jet black hair. From what I've seen, they commonly have hair that is lots of different colors, such as blond with rainbow streaks.

tendency to speak in text talk and use the word 'like' out of context.

Ah, I see. So every "queen bee" of every high school, who wears abercrombie and hollister every day is actually "Emo"?

say they are massive music fans when they have only half a gigabyte of mainstream rock.

Okay, so a) anyone who happens to have SOME less popular music, or have MORE than half a gigabyte of music is not, by definition, "Emo," and b) people who actually like music a lot and just don't have the time and/or means to go out and buy a hard drive's worth of music, and so just have to settle for mooching music off their friends who have less discriminating tastes, OR, people who just HAPPEN to enjoy some mainstream rock now and then, are "Emo"?

'Twilight' is their favourite film.

...That's ridiculous. Taste in movies has nothing to do with it.... also, see my "queen bee" comment above.

think 'Mosha' music is a real genre and so desparately protest their indivuality.

...okay. I can't really say anything about these, since I don't even know what you mean by "mosha" music, and desperately protesting one's individuality is kind of annoying and pretentious.

But as to the rest... well, I don't think you're really talking about "Emos." I think you're talking about "Posers."

You know... people who pretend to be something they're not?

-------

I'm sorry if this came off wrong. But I see now why you are so resentful of these "Emos," if that was the definition you were working under... you basically just listed examples of ways people can be fake, which most people who are not fake also resent.

Not everyone who is fake is "Emo"... And not everyone (although, admittedly, a large number) who is "Emo" is fake.

In my mind, an emo is someone with dyed black hair and pale skin (foundation?) that slits their wrists and wants to die. I've never met any emos though, so I can't attest to that. Or maybe I'm thinking of goths, with the appearance thing...

The word "emo" has become a pejorative term...I'm guessing that the 'Individuals'/outcasts are already depressed enough as it is and therefore would reject the title which would further demoralize them...

Either that or they think pretending to deny the label would make them more cool than they believe themselves to be.

I doubt that this is entirely correct/the only reason but it's just my theory.

Emo. (Sorry Jesin, I stole your 'thing'. ;) ...And there's an Emo, Co. Laois? Where did that placename come from?)

I think the term was originally used as being short for emotional, i.e., someone who is very in touch with their own emotions/feels them very strongly or purely. Mind, with the way it's understood in most contexts now, it's almost never used that way anymore, just because of the popular image that's become attached to it. When I refer to myself as emo, though, that's generally the context in which I use it. ...Which means I avoid using it around people who I know will misunderstand me.

(Yes, I know that basically means everyone I meet. :()

I have to agree with snowyashes, though: your definition doesn't seem to have a lot to do with being emo as the social clique seems to exist. I would love to know how one speaks in text talk/chatspeak, too, since they're both corruptions of the spelling of the language and don't have much, if anything, to do with syntax or pronunciation.

......well, i can't explain my true definitions without boring you all (and me) shitless with a gargantuan essay. i suppose it is an INTP thing in that, when asked to define a word, i can't do it on the spot. i can feel all the words and phrases pertaining to the chosen word, but can't form a simple sentence encompassing all of my definitions. maybe i just understand it too much.

i was asked to define 'exotic' and obviously the images, words, sounds relating to the word was overwhelming, i could easily write a myriad of in-depth paragraphs on each thought entrapped in my mind, but not a simple 'oh, it means this' could escape. to do that is impossible.

simpler times. less complicated, less misery filled days not realising potential and slowly being eroded away by the shit supplied by society. as shit as school is, not as bad as later on. on my deathbed i confess my inactivity and plague my grave. sounds fun

Huh. I find it fairly easy to define words; my friends say I'm as good as a walking dictionary. For example, exotic: something outside normal experience; more specifically, something which greatly differs from what is considered common or normal by the person experiencing it. Sometimes I have trouble finding the exact words to express the meaning concisely and correctly, but it never takes more then a minute or two to locate them in my head.
