Hello lads,

One of my favourite features of this forum is how each users Operating System and Web Browser is shown in their profile information next to their posts. I find it very interesting for some reason, considering INTP's SEEM generally more technologically advanced than some other types.

If this thread has already been made, please refer me to it.

If you use multiple operating systems, please select the primary operating system you use. I'm very sorry if I have not mentioned your OS. However, I would appreciate it if you post what you use.

Once you have answered the poll, please answer these questions:

  • Why do you use the operating system that you use?
  • Is there anything unique, or different about your operating system as opposed to the mainstream?
  • What is your favourite thing about the operating system you use?
  • Would you consider changing operating systems?
If you want to share other information, please do. I am interested.

You should know it's often incorrect.
For example, I don't use Safari.

On my primary desktop,i have Ubuntu 13.04 and Windows 7 on dual boot. I use Ubuntu everywhere it's possible, the Linux kernal is inherently more efficient and secure than Windows will ever be.
For anything else like gaming and video editing,I use Windows 7. It sort of gives you the best of both worlds, not to mention you can always repair Win7 from Ubuntu whenever it decides to fail on you.

I think it would have been better if you had the ability to vote for multiple options as some like me use multiple operating systems.

My life is a lie.

I was tossing up between doing that or just saying "primary OS", considering your input and that I now want to vote for the other OS's I use, I'll change it. EDIT: I don't think I am allowed to edit the poll once posted.

Similar situation for me, I use Manjaro and Windows 7 Dual booting, Windows 7 for games. However I am very excited about all of these Steam games being ported to Linux and Steam wishing to port all 2500 games. That and the realisation that OpenGL runs more efficiently on Linux makes me hopeful.

I think that's more of a long term goal. Right now,Valve doesn't even have all of their games ported to Linux yet.
I agree,OpenGL along with the Linux kernal make DirectX and Windows look archaic. What's more exciting is that the difference in performance will only widen with time, most graphics drivers offer very little in optimization for Linux right now.
If the next popular AAA title supports Linux and offers even a slight performance advantage along with it,I can see most of the gaming community migrating to Ubuntu or another distro.

I've never operated on anyone before, so I think it'd be dishonest of me to pretend that I've created any sort of systemic approach to it.

Windows 7 on my home-build gaming desktop, but I've used Ubuntu and Arch Linux too.

<--- I don't use safari either, it's a lie.

I use OSX primarily, but also Windows 7 for games/Ubuntu on old computers.

Why do you use the operating system that you use? -- Programs I need/needed. It's stable/mostly hassle free. Also for development purposes/ testing on different platforms.

What is your favourite thing about the operating system you use? -- Stability.
Would you consider changing operating systems? -- Sure.

Lol, so many different Linux distributions. I would have been happy to be lumped under "Linux" in general, but I chose Ubuntu although I specifically use Kubuntu (why specifically 13.10? This will get outdated in half a year or less).

  • Why do you use the operating system that you use?
    • Nice visual effects
    • User-friendly UI (to me) (I especially love Search & Launch)
    • Extreme customisability
    • Esperanto language localisation
    • Ease of installing software and programming libraries/tools
  • Is there anything unique, or different about your operating system as opposed to the mainstream?
    • I'd say my computer in particular is different from the average Kubuntu machine as it has been highly customised.
    • I don't use the K-menu and have replaced the button with a Search & Launch button.
    • I have no title bars as I use the title-bar-in-taskbar plugin to save screen space (and my taskbar is on top).
    • My interface is a very tweaked QTCurve which uses as many translucency effects as possible.
    • I customise the look and feel of Yakuake (the drop down console) too.
  • What is your favourite thing about the operating system you use?
    • Generally looks much prettier than Windows after tweaking, and is more convenient too
    • Esperanto
    • Haha, this is the same as question 1
  • Would you consider changing operating systems?
    • Maybe. I usually have to use Windows at work so that is kind of an enforced change of OS.
    • If I change my home OS it will likely be to another form of Linux as the others are simply too rigid and uncustomisable, besides not having Esperanto as a supported language.

Used mainly Ubuntu until recently, but switched to crunchbang, it's much lighter which is great on a netbook with only an intel Atom and 1GB ram.

Right now I'm using windows because my sister took the charger of said netbook to the other side of Europe.

Australia.
OSX, Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro.
Purely because I had to use a Macbook at a private school for two years, so I was just used to using Macs and whatnot. I'd only really change if I got a gaming desktop computer (unlikely because I don't game much). I don't really need any extra customisability or anything, I love the clean look of Mountain Lion. Anything unique? Not really. I moved the dock to the left hand side and changed the icons to Storm Troopers and Jango & Bobba Fett. That's about it.

I use windows 7, because i am attached to awesome software options like total commander and foobar2000. picasa, irfan view and photoshop also keep me quite happy.

i have a great custom scripted "shell replacement", named powerpro: a program launcher with toolbars, alias command line, hotkeys, menus, windows management features, context menu extension, runs scripts that can pick up anything as parameter, from file names to window classes or positions. powerpro is out of development, but works. i use litestep for systemtray.

after installing windows, i need to tame it for a few annoying days.
i have learned how to do this efficiently.
my system of software is mostly portable.
i like that i never notice windows' existence after applying my customisations.

i have tried gentoo and other distributions in the past (2005 i think). came back to windows after wasting weeks exploring the super lame software choices of the linux world.

I think about going linux because of privacy concerns only.

but i don't feel like learning new detail oriented stuff in this episode of my life.
