What's your driving like?

I was quite late starting driving - It was less than two years ago I got my licence. I was always afraid to start, because I daydream so much I was afraid I'd zone out and end up in an accident. But it doesn't work that way. I still have clean no claims on my insurance.

I noticed I actually do daydream while driving, but I'm sure it barely uses a fraction of my brain. Even if I'm daydreaming, I'm completely aware of every other car or hazard around me and never fail to stop, even if someone suddenly jumps out and I'm in a world of my own, I was aware of the possibility that they might do and prepared to stop suddenly.

I've also never had a speeding ticket - despite the fact that I don't strictly adhere to speed limits at all times. I mean, I do so sensibly and would only speed up on an empty road I know well and know is safe, plus I know where every speed camera is. I am very strict about breaking distances because I calculate the perfect distance intuitively, then add 50% to be safe, and I don't overtake when on a single lane unless I have no other choice. I also assume everyone else on the road is complete dipstick and will do the stupidest thing I can imagine, and never trust that they won't. I think that's also a good reason why I don't crash.

Just curious what other INTP's are like as drivers.

Hah, I got my learner's permit in January and I've only gone driving three times since then.
Pretty much everyone else I know started driving as soon as they could.

I've always been scared that I'd zone out while driving, my mind would wander or something and I'd forget what's going on around me.

Also the roads in the area I live are SCARY-- I mean all these narrow, barely two lane hills that trucks have flipped over on, and a bunch of crazy people who drive way too fast.
Ahhh
The whole idea of driving is really intimidating to me. It's so dangerous.

Pretty calm. I always signal, drive between 5 and 10 mph above the limit (higher might give me a ticket), wait for openings to switch lanes, and just try to avoid being reckless in general. I daydream as well which has never caused problems.

I've had my car license for about a year and a half now, been also driving a motorcycle since then and a moped like three years before that. I think my driving is quite good, pretty relaxed when I'm in a car, although I tend to speed on the highways. With my bike I lane split pretty hard and often get into somewhat dangerous situations but 90% of them I just know that they'll work out before initiation so I don't care. Have gotten quite some speeding tickets though...

I still haven't got around to it and I'm going to be 36 next weekend.

Any tips on how to motivate myself to do it?

Okay I've been driving more and more recently. Picking my sister up from camp and stuff.

My trouble areas are:

- telling where I am in the road. Am I too close to the middle? The side? It's so hard for me to tell. And bc of this I tend to swerve quickly if another car is coming or there's a giant pothole etc :kodama1: Doesn't help that there are no lines on the roads where I live.

- sharp turns?? Idk when to turn the wheel, how much, etc yikes

Yeah there's still this. There's this one hill right by my house that I'm scared to be on even in the passenger seat, yikes..

I am not sure. I only remember leaving and arriving. The rest of the trip is driven by other consciousness. It seems that he is a very safe driver since I have never gotten in an accident...

I think I posted in here before but my post probably got dumped when the forum exploded in May.

Pretty much a big-picture driver, and fearless, because if you are thinking rationally and paying attention to what's around you (and the state of the road in five seconds), there's not much to fear...
... except idiot drivers who do stupid or impulsive shit. Sigh.

Anyway, I usually don't even get speeding tickets despite zooming around because I'm aware of where the cops would be in a given landscape.

I do find overthinking in the present moment is is worse than just going with the flow, it can make you seize up. Project ahead in the future, trust instinct in the present, and don't overreact to anything.

I still don't like parallel parking much, but I'm okay at that.

Here were I live the thing is you have to learn to drive manual. New cars of course have automatic, but the market is still saturated with manuals. My brother has an automatic which is pretty cool.

My driving as far as I can tell is pretty terrible. I can drive recklessly and I am pretty much bad at guessing the distance. Or should I say pretty good at guessing the distance, but not always sure what is the proper safe distance so I can drive few centimiters from another car and my passangers will go into panic and I am just thinking " why are they screaming?"

That's interesting
My mom said that nowadays in the area we live the newer cars all are automatics.
She wants me to learn to drive a stick shift though, which sounds cool

Careful pls

Distance: for every 10 mile increment you're driving at allow one more car-length of space between you and the driver in front of you

Like if you're going 70 mph you should ideally have 7 car-lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you
Tips from my mom
She's a good driver

Unlike my INTP father who will speed up for the hell of it, swerve all over the road for fun and fly around with his headlights off at night

Then again he learned how to drive from our grandpa, who drove with both feet.

Not speeding is difficult for me, but I manage it to a pretty safe degree now days. Considering I have flipped a car before, if I drive the way I want to, it just gets me into trouble. Now days I simply drive the speed of traffic, almost always signal, and always watch my blind spot instead of guessing if someone is there or not. Haven't been in an accident or gotten a ticket in years and that is a big improvement from when I first started. As much as I would like to ride a motorcycle, I know I would kill myself if I did so I am staying away from those.

I have a Honda that I rebuilt and turbocharged. Was tuned and dynoed at ~350whp. I think it was originally built for 127hp (maybe 100whp). It's a bit hard not to drive it spirited, but I have some rules I follow to stay safe.

I don't tailgate and don't speed if other cars are around me. I don't engage the turbo in turns. And I don't drive above 90mph on the highway if it's windy; that little car weighs like 2500lbs and can get blown off the road and becomes unstable around 90mph. It also has a problem with the drive-train (unequal drive shafts), so at around 13psi it starts to pull to one side and two very firm hands are needed on the wheel. Maybe some day I will fix that, but it requires changing the wheel hubs, axles, adding a half shaft, and a new differential for the transmission. I don't think I care that much, especially when I just did it to learn about forced induction cars and have a car that I can work on myself. I do want to twin-charge it with a roots blower though. Maybe a more linear power band will help the torque steer problem or at least make it easier to feel and be ready for.

So I would say I'm a safe driver, but also a spirited one.

Driving scares me to death. My awareness of the things around me is not that great, much to the dismay of my ISTP father. I'm just waiting for the advent of teleportation :D.

Most of my driving is the same routes day after day, so I am on autopilot as soon as I pull out of the driveway. I probably should keep my mind on task more than I do, a few months ago I found myself driving the route I take to pick up my kids from school when I should have been heading to work.

I usually am leaving home ~20 minutes before I need to be at work with a 15-17 minute drive. I have a 7 minute window to punch in so this works pretty good for me. Wisconsin winters end up making me late a few times over the season.

As far as my actual driving, I drive 5 mph over the limit and keep my eyes as far ahead as possible. I try to predict what people will do and change lanes well in advance. When turning from a two way stop into traffic I can be too cautious as I don't like slowing down traffic and am very annoyed when I have to slow down when someone pulls out in front of me.

At work I drive an electric pallet jack most of the day. I turn the speed up as high as it will go and surf around at top speed. Top speed is only 9mph, but it exciting enough for me, especially trying to maintain that speed in other forklift traffic or around turns.
