Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

This "guilty secrets/pleasures" thread is an interesting idea. I also play D&D some.

I have another, but it's so exceedingly nerdy that I'm too embarrassed to say what it is, even here. If someone can guess what it is, I'll admit it, both because I won't have to be the first person to say it and because it means someone else here has heard of it. If nobody guesses it, you'll just have to wait until I can work up the guts to say it, although I expect before that I'll start posting hints.

Who knows, maybe the guesses will turn up some other interesting stuff. So, what could it be that interests me, but is so exceedingly geeky I'm embarrassed to admit it here? Start guessing.

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

No, no blog here.

I'm interested in it (it being the thing you're trying to guess), but I don't go to anything about it at the moment. I have no idea what an FL club is.

I don't believe I've ever produced anything on the subject that is available for anyone to see right now. Maybe I did once or twice, but if I did, I did it anonymously.

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

Meh. Close enough. Not quite, but close enough.

However, I can tell you I'm sure I have never written a fanfic, not even anonymously. I've constructed partial ones in my head, but I'd guess almost everyone does that, but never written any.

When I said I don't know what an FL club is, I expected you to tell me.

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

No. Also, it's not just stories, other stuff too.

I'm interested both the content and how the community around it behaves. The stories make a good example of this; many of them aren't really fanfics, not with a strict definition of the word, because many of them are much more original than that. But they still act like fanfics, sometimes moreso than real fanfics. What I mean is, if you compare the behavior of fanfics to that of the stories and TV series they are based on, the stories I'm talking about are different from "mainstream" books and TV shows in the same way that fanfics are, but to a greater extent.

I guess you could draw an analogy to the open source development model. These people often write stories in each other's "universes", and ask to use each other's characters. Rather writing fanfics based on "mainstream" books and TV shows, they write fanfics based on each other's fanfics. I can think of at least one instance in which someone (we'll call him person B) wrote a story based on person A's stories (not set in the same universe), and then person A wrote a story set in person B's universe. It's fun watching this sort of stuff happen.

Well, I seem to have derailed this thread pretty thoroughly. Should we split this off to a different thread or something? I don't want to get in the way of anyone else's confessions (and I don't want them getting in my way, either).

Maybe my introduction thread? Or perhaps it should go in another thread all by itself. Yes, I think that's a better idea.

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

On-line collaborative writing group? No, it's way too big to be called a group. It's really more of a subculture, and it contains a lot of smaller overlapping communities that do things like that. I haven't done anything in it yet; I'm still acting as an observer. In some ways, it seems a little silly that I'm so embarrassed about it, which is one reason why I made that initial cryptic post. I knew you people wouldn't stop bugging me about it until I said more about it.

Edit: I don't think I've so much as mentioned the topic anywhere but here, excepting a few sites that were primarily about the topic in the first place. I was willing to bring it up here because not many people here are likely to jump on anybody for anything like that.

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

I'd like to remind people that the guessing is still open. (I recognize the possibility that nobody but me is interested in this at the moment; if so, tell me.) If someone guesses right I'll say so, but I won't reveal it myself yet. I don't really feel guilty about it, embarrassed would be closer, although that's not quite right either.

I will now collect the hints I've given so far, and also add a couple more.

You're looking for a fandom that can't agree on what the fandom is about, although almost all of the answers show a fairly obvious common theme. Some people even say the word "fandom" doesn't fit because they aren't really fans of anything in particular, but the stuff the community produces is similar to the stuff other fandoms produce (especially the sci-fi fandom, in many cases).

The fandom has gotten some bad publicity in the past, and is often wary of the mainstream media as a result.

The shortest correct guess is one word long. It's a fairly common word and most people have used it in some form, although usually not to refer to this fandom. I will also accept a description of what the fandom seems to be about. Any more guesses, or are you bored with this topic for now?

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

No. Who writes Magic the Gathering fanfics?

Also, Magic the Gathering is too widespread. This is something different.

The "bad publicity" I'm talking about is much worse than anything Magic the Gathering has gotten, although there wasn't a whole lot of it.

No, that's a bad hint, then you'll just be guessing words at random instead of actually looking for the community I'm talking about.

I do have more hints in mind, but I'm saving them for later, and they all have to do with the concept rather than the word.

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

I'm not good at guessing games (liking isn't the same as being good at), but I'll give it a shot. You are a cosplayer (O.O). If not, you collect star trek memorabilia (oh emm gee!). If not, you spend your spare time programming (nerd).

I expect all of these to miss the mark completely (see first sentence)... give hints or I'll give even weirder guesses (bad threat).

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

No, I'm not a cosplayer or Anime fan. Actually, I'm not really part of the fandom I'm talking about yet, I'm just interested enough to almost be. The anime fans tend to look down on what I speak of even more than the sci-fi fans, although them looking down on anything seems weird.
No, I'm not a Star Trek fan.
Yes, I spend my spare time programming, but that's not what I'm talking about at all. If you look, that information already exists elsewhere on the board. It clashes with too many of my previous hints.

I'm not going to give any more hints at this time; I want to see what people can do with what I've already given in previous posts. I do have more hints in mind, though.

What are they guessing, and what were the hints?

I'd normally look, but ther're 7 pages in this forum...

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

I already said, I originally hijacked this thread in the last post on page 4, so you only have 3 pages + 1 post to look through. Some of the posts are also pretty short. Just start at the end of page 4 and read from there; it should only take between 3 and 10 minutes.

Maybe it isn't, but other people here have admitted to playing D&D, and nobody has mentioned this. Also, many people in and almost in the fandom are reluctant to admit it, which started because of the aforementioned bad publicity and worsened and persisted for more complex reasons.

Depends what you mean by that. The answer is probably "sometimes". Anyway, time to drop another hint: they can be found on deviantART. I will reserve further hints for later. Keep guessing.

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

Yeah, Zakai.... does that... consistently...

-_-

That's actually against the rules on the larger INTJ forum, in a very formal way. I have to say, I'm a fan.

--

With that last hint, Jessin, I may actually have it. I occasionally browse the DA community because I have a few friends there. Are you speaking of the community that just draws 'fan art' stuff in general, sometimes not completely directed? I don't know of the name of that community off the top of my head, but I know of them. They do lots of videogame character drawings and the like.

I don't know of any bad publicity they received, but everything else seems to fit when I retrospectively think about it.

.L

(P.S.- I have my account set to show 40 posts per page, so we're only on page 2 in my book; keep that in mind when using page numbers as a reference. I assume you meant post 41 and on, though? Default is 10 posts per page, if I am not mistaken.)

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

No, wrong. They don't make fanart of everything. They make fanart of nothing but each other's artwork; they create characters to draw and they draw each other's characters. (Well, I guess the inexperienced ones tend to draw characters from certain movies and cartoons for practice, but it seems they usually grow out of that.) There's also a unifying theme behind all of this, which in most cases is summed up by the one-word answer I mentioned.

You missed. I think you're getting close; keep trying and you might get it soon.

At the time I'm writing this, the only one of these on the dA front page pops up or doesn't randomly in the "popular" section when you reload the page. Nothing in the "new" section at the moment, but I don't know how fast that'll change.

(P.S.- You may be right, and I think I'll be changing my settings on that too, soon. I was referring to the first post I made on this thread.)

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

No, Zakai, I am speaking of your exclamation points!!!!

Whatever that is, it doesn't look like obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, that is irrelevant to the topic at hand, and any discussion of Zakai's use of punctuation belongs elsewhere.

Back to relevancies. (I know, I took over the thread, but I assure you it wasn't intentional and this is not too bad as far as threadjacking goes. A discussion about punctuation, on the other hand, would be.) I do bleev that the combination of the other hints I've given with the deviantART hint should be enough to get it within several more guesses.

I knew it! I knew you'd be the one to get it!

You win one of Aphasia's imaginary cookies.

At least, I'm almost one. I've never actually made anything on the subject or been to a con or anything, and I don't plan to at any time in the near future.
I don't even have a fursona.

I may do that at some point in my life, assuming I'm not killed early. I've only lived a small fraction of it so far.

Anyway, I'm curious, how was it that you knew about that but nobody else here did?

Any INTP who gets it that fast has to have looked into it some, or at least seriously considered doing so.

So, how far into furriness have you looked?

Hmm. I wasn't expecting that one.

So, we have a former Second Life player on here. I'd ask you how exactly the furs ruined it for you, but this thread is getting kinda full of irrelevancies. P'raps a thread split is in order?

Re: What's Your Guilty Secret?

I accidentally ran into a furry area. And while we're at it, 4chan and rule 34 of the internetz ruined untold amount of things for me. I never truly was a second life player, my friend was and I did some stuff on his character.

For those wondering what rule 34 is:
http://xkcd.com/305/

Yeah, I'm not talking about the yiffy stuff. If you want to avoid that, don't go to 4chan.

What, was there stuff like that going on in the furry area you stumbled into, without warning signs?

I think what got me interested in the Furdom was some of TDR's art (http://tanidareal.deviantart.com/).
