I don't know if it's just me, but people who smile all the time kind of get under my skin. I don't know why. Especially when you're trying to have a serious conversation with them and they are smiling. It just seem inappropriate to me. I've come across these types many times. Is smiling more prevalent to a particular type? And I mean compulsive smiling. The type of person who you've never seen change their expression from smiling and who you've never seen get mad.

I think smiling is a very Fe conscious thing; it's a function that primarily picks up on and influences the social environment. Smiling is frequently seen as polite so it makes sense as a default Fe user position when in conversation.

I'm an INFJ which means Fe is my secondary function, I frequently smile around people I don't know well because I acknowledge it's appropriate for the situation, it makes them more comfortable seeing someone smiling than stone-faced/ disinterested. Like, I went to a friends at the weekend and was introduced to his flatmate and his boyfriend over dinner; they were talking a lot about computers which I'm not that interested in or know much about, so I mostly just smiled and jumped in with the occasional joke, but it's only because I didn't want to give a bad impression.

Well, theoretically speaking, it should be the E_FJs.

Smiling doesn't bother me too much, though. I'll agree that excessive cheerfulness can be annoying, but I don't run into that very often.

In my experience, Fe types tend to smile when they think they're supposed to while Fi types are more likely to smile all the time, just because. The latter annoys me as well. Especially when they get all self-righteous and start telling other people that they should smile more.

I knew an ISFP who constantly smiled. He had far too little Te for his own good.

In the end he he couldn't handle my presence and unfriended me.

I tend to smile when I'm socializing. I'm not sure if I was groomed to or if I find something amusing when other people are around. Maybe both.

I think ISFJs smile a lot and laugh too hard.

But I can’t see anything bad about smiling. And I smile whenever I feel happy or exited or when I think about something stupid. I can’t help it.

I'm the first one to smile when it's warranted. And I have a real strong laugh. I don't have a problem with smiling. I'm talking about someone who smiles all the time in every situation. For instance, I was in court a few months ago for a child murder case. The forensics expert who was on the stand was being asked questions. She had a smile on her face the whole time while answering questions about this murdered child. It was so odd to me. I've come across this a few times. People who have permanent smiles on their faces and can't change their expression. It's like everything is a permanent joke (well perhaps it is). But that's my point. I'm not hating on smiling in general. I'm not that much of a crank.

Do internal smiles punctuated by grins of schadenfreude or smugness count?

I smile moderately. as long as there energy to be mirrored. It is more of a mirror. ENFP's really bring out my smile's or at least my happy energy, INTP(me)+ENFP+dancefloor=WIN

What makes my smile's go away are EXXJ's who start domineering people. it only happens when the EXXJ's have ppl around them who can back them up/feed them/tell them how great they are. Then they take this herd mentality of the group and then get this authority to judge or feel they do. SJ's and SP's are the ones who power this herd leader.

1v1 they get destroyed and are not an issue to me, for INTP's are unherdable.

I prolly laugh more than anyone else I know, as long as its good. something not good like jack black movies make me want to go punch a baby.

In my experiences, all the IN_P's seem to have an endless smile on their face. But it was more of a 'coping' mechanism, I had picked that out immediately. Not to mention, in comparison to your thoughts of 'smile-ish' people. These IN_P's had a very adorable smile. In which case, it comes down to the mindset and intention of the person, to why they smile so much.

I agree, with someone in this thread mentioning: E_FJ's seem to smile irritably the most. Though I think ENFJ's are also the one's coping by it.

I don't seem to exactly get annoyed if someone is smiling. But what really makes me flame for rage inside this tiny heart of mine is: "Laughing". That is the extreme point where a person is not taking me...seriously.

Yeah, I think I smirk a lot. Usually it's due to some thought in my head. It comes at very random moments though. Also, sometimes certain situations make me smirk because of the absurdity of it. I guess I haven't really articulated my annoyance that well. I suppose I'm more annoyed with constant cheerful unwarranted smiling people. haha. Perhaps I am a crank.

To me it depends on the kind of laugh it is. I usually love when people laugh though. Not the Beavis and Butthead type of laughing. Again, I suppose it depends on the situation and if the laughter was appropriate to the comment I made. It would be frustrating if someone laughed in response to a serious comment you made. But perhaps I'm being a crank.

I've been told that my default facial impression is "infuriating". One of my friends regularly yells at me for giving her "that look", she thinks it looks mockingly superior (I smirk a little). I keep telling her that it's just my face.

Aaargh, feel pretty guilty after reading some of the last few posts. I've been laughing at people lots lately, during serious moments. It's because their words come out in interesting patterns and it sets me on another mental track, but another part of my brain *is* paying attention and listening and empathising.... but I guess the laugh doesn't help. And I can't seem to stop it coming out; it bubbles forth uncontrollably and then trying to hold back just looks worse because it eventually explodes, causing even more offense. Fuck, I've lost it.

I think IxxPs will often be caught with smiles that look secret or private. INFJs too perhaps. I don't know which type smiles the most though, I don't think there's any one type that does.

People that are always smiling and don't seem to have one serious thought their entire lives irritate me too. I've already analyzed it and I don't think it is envy. Probably it is resulted from my conclusion that these kinds of individuals are social facades. That they try to please everyone, but in the end have no real friends. I abominate lies, even the ones hidden in a facial expression.

Most of them I presume are ESFPs and ESFJs. However, when I'm socializing I tend to smile a lot, not in a false way, though. The difference in me is that the process of creating a bond is complex, I'm very selective and only after seeing loyalty I would take out the mask. If I could identify with common people in every corner, I suppose I would be talking and laughing a lot. Everyone tells me I'm overly serious, frowning all the time.

Ditto. I dislike herding that comes from ESFJs. ISTJs can also be herding types, more overt and less frequent. I don't care as much if it comes from an ExTJ, because it doesn't hit me personally as much.

I smile slightly for social convention. I smile deeply if I feel a close connection to someone, sometimes without saying anything. I will smile this way to INTJs, INTPs, IxFPs, etc. I do not smile to imposing types, because I'm busy drawing boundaries on them and picking them apart psychologically.

My INTP friend seems to think that I think "everything is a joke". This may have something to do with my smiles and... humor. My smiles toward him are a shorthand way of signaling that "I'm not here to judge, ridicule, tell you what to do, or gripe about something you did. Nor am I in the mood to receive negative stimuli." My general sense is that a smile = incompetence.

Huh. My friends think I smile a lot, and the people who don't know me think I'm apathetic.
I smile when I'm with friends and when I think it is socially neccessary.

I'd probably say the same, hehe..

As for who smiles most, I can't really say for sure.
But I don't think FJs have as big an advantage as suggested in this thread. They can also be quite frustrated with life in general, and even with their own self-obligation to be polite, and be unhappy people. Having to usher to people and be polite is an energy expense, even for Fe doms.

If I had to say, I'd say xSFPs. Their smile doesn't take up energy like an Fe smile does because it is an inward-turned Fi smile. It is more energizing than draining, thus can be maintained longer -- if the person is genuinely happy.
