What profession do you want/are you doing?

What are your plans for the future or for the moment? Anything you would like to do, imposed or recommended to do? Why do you want to do that profession, what made you choose it? If you are doing it, how do you like it?

For now, I'm sure at 100% that I want to be a neurologist or a pharmacologist. I have a lot of interest and curiosity toward everything that is scientifically related. What makes me prefere these two options is that I love to do researches as I spend twice times more on projects than others. Being neurologist with a philosophical view, in my opinion, will help me find some answers to my longed questions, like 'where does our thinking come from'. I hope I can contribute to science and try finding the secrets of the brain, that remains mysterious.

On the other part, being pharmacologist will bring me to learn about the human body, the chemical substances, the secrets of natural medicine, and a lot more, as well as the effects of this substances on the human body. This is very much linked to the neurologist career, since it has the cause/consequence/effect with the brain and different materials that affect it.

I was imposed by my family to become doctor, because that's what my family is about: money, status. Coming for a poor region in Vietnam, my family thinks conservatively...They fear the misery they lived through. I can understand them for that, but I cannot accept them imposing on me what to become. And the more they recommend and try to make me tend for that, the less I want to follow. Anyhow, I have, in the end, suceeded to make them less talking to me about my career in life, since at that time, I was still searching for who I am.

I was never recommend to go into anything in particular, only something that is related to Health Science (e.g. pharmacist). But by experience, I know for sure that I'm not the type to talk to people and to interact with them often, though I like meeting new people (probably like all of you/us INTP ^^'').

While you will eventually be making millions, T, I will be running your hospital library on your pocket change. :D Well, not really, but close. Library budgets (especially business library) are teeeeensy.

I'm going into Library Science. I like to have some structure around me, even if it's not over myself or my own things. My books are painstaking arranged by subject, favorites, authors, title, what have you (my books are rather like the albums in the movie High Fidelity in the way that every time something significant happens, they get rearranged). Also, becoming a librarian will allow me to help people become more informed and to help them become more resourceful as well. I am and always have been more of an instigator and support figure, and I find the library science is the perfect field for me to melt into the background and become a chameleon while still making a small difference in the world.

My dream job is a music librarian at Julliard. I can dream, can't i?

I have modest plans. I want to completely deconstruct society and put it back together again in a totally better way.

lol. Sounds like a plan. Can I help? I'd really like to revise the higher education system, and the whole idea of censorship in libraries, as it's Banned Books Week next week and I've been thinking it rather a lot lately.

Speaking of, next week, everyone read your favorite Banned Book! I am going to read The Giver, and perhaps a few chapters of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Sure you can help! Can you coordinate the European revolution?

Didn't know they had a Banned Books week. I shall move to favourite books to comment...

I have just realized that by "requesting username" to "Resident Librarian" I was in fact changing my s/n and not the "new" bit underneath. I suppose if I just thought about it for two seconds, it might have made sense. Suffice it to say, I have decided to be a further nuisance by requesting my name to go back to Gerti. *sighs* Ahh well.

I'll have to see about the European Revolution. . . the Swiss might be hesitant. You could threaten to take away their chocolate, though. The French might out too. OOH! Take away their wine, and we'll steal the Louvre. Dibs on the Van Goghs.

Both changed. Actually, anyone can change their user title in their profile. It's the user name that requires intervention.

Well, I know both of these are a long shot but, I wouldn't mind being and actor, at least a cartoon voice or something. Also I would like to be a professional baseball player. Not exactly a real long shot because I'm sure I could at least make Single A but, still a long shot.

If neither of those work out I'll go into business or law.

I'm currently studying social economics as an undergraduate. Not really sure why I ended up on this course; I guess I wanted to get to know how society's resources are handled. In the spirit of the responsible, conscious citizen or something. :p
Now I'm not so sure anymore, maybe I should have stuck with something I have a real passion for... problem being, the only other studies I considered at the time were history, and video/computer game production. Neither of which lead to very certain careers, I should mention.
Might as well get a few low-paid jobs for a while if I decide this was not for me...
Looks like we have a lot of diverse plans and professions on this forum.

How about a list?

1983 - 1985: Phlebotomist at a local hospital
1985 - 1986: Pathologist's assistant at same hospital
1987 - 1989: Community college tutor
1989 - 1991: Security guard
1991 - 1992: Community college teacher, field worker (hybrid corn farms)
1993 - 1994: Forklift driver, warehouse worker
1994 - present: University teacher
1995 - present: Private military school tutor

I've done a few other things, stuck in there in between other jobs. I stocked shelves at a grocery store, for example, and delivered newspapers as a boy.

On the side, I do freelance editing work for a few publishers in the RPG gaming industry. Ideally, I would get a full-time professorial position at a university, but the economy in my area cannot currently support it. And it doesn't help that I don't have a PhD yet.

I am currently an undeclared freshman in college at a respectable university, but I lack direction currently. Recently I took the Myer-briggs Assesment through my school Career Counseling and found out I am INTP. What professions would you suggest for an INTP interested in nearly everything?

Currently in Stockholm School of Teaching, working part time as a pizza maker.
Alot of intelligent people underestimate how fun it is working in restaurants, constantly having challenges working in your own overly advanced system of production and continually progressively get better and better. The downside is having to deal with deceitful lazy coworkers that try to project their problems elsewhere.

Im also into weight training and nutrition, however when I applied to a nutrition program in a university I ended up as reserve number 1400. Talk about competition. LOL

Mih meh.. I'm not really sure yet. I'm at that indecisive spot in high school where every two seconds someone asks you this question, and you still can't find an answer. But I'm thinking of majoring in piano, something else music related, a science, or maybe even something like political philosophy. I guess I can't get very excited about the whole career path thing.. I may just end up wandering from library to library as a nihilistic hobo. I wouldn't mind doing a little writing either..

I'm working on getting my Bachelor's in Library Science, and hopefully going on to get my MLS in the next few years.

I find that information management and organization is something I really enjoy. However, I have to admit that one of the most fascinating jobs for me would be a reference librarian. I can use all my useless collected trivia to answer questions for a job!

I also thought about going into philosophy or english (literature), but neither really appeal to me in the long run. A degree in Library Science is practical, interesting, and you can get a pretty good job anywhere. Also it will allow me to travel, which is something I DEFINITELY want to do in the future.

casually playing guitar in my mental arena
I'm not sure, though I would like to be a number of things. There are neither enough hours in the day nor a long enough lifetime.

I want to be an artist (living on the enormous inheritance of a long lost incredibly rich deceased relative I've never met)
a cellist in a rock/metal-oriented orchestra
bassist or guitarist in a well known prog metal band
a lawyer, defending the original, pure values of the United States of America (except that I'm not much of a speaker)
a history professor, teaching young oblivious people history through literature, art, and music
art critic
photographer
sociologist (nothing like detached people observing)
psychiatrist, fixing up all the mental cases out there without being incredibly involved with their lives

good thing I've got college to figure things out.

I don't think I would suggest a profession. I'd suggest taking your time in college and finding out for yourself what you are interested in. In other words, I think that you are going to end up being the best person to get advice from here, and that it will happen on its own.

But, I understand the frustration with having too many options open.

I applied to the Air Force (once in my youth), was very disappointed when they did not approve me (sure, I had record high scores on the IQ tests but they said that my total lack of knowledge on air crafts meant that I was not motivated enough. Had I known that I would have studied in advance - but I assumed THEY would teach me that stuff...!). Later I have wondered what would have happened had they admitted me. How long would I have stayed? Some aspects of the military life still attracts me, though: e.g. always knowing what clothes to put on in the morning!

So when the Air Force was not interested I took a masters degree in Math, meant to be a teacher in Math and Physics but suddendly discovered computer science, and have now worked as a computer programmer for more than 20 years (last 7 years in my own business). Still don't know what to do when I grow up, though! Sheep farmer...?

...
But, I understand the frustration with having too many options open.

Isn't that the case every day? One can never reach a decision because there are too many options to investigate first!?

I would love to be a professional cyclist someday but those guys don't make much.

I'm still young (21) and still have NO clue what I want to do. I have at least two years or so to finish college. I'm at the end of finishing my core classes. I was at another school (in NY) before the school I am at now (back home in Georgia) and I didn't do so well in NY.

If anything, I would like to just have a nice job that I like or just something that pays well but a job I won't hate. Of the careers I am maybe interested in is a Lawyer, an IT Specialist, or a History high school teacher.

Being a teacher was something I thought of doing back when I was in high school and still do now. The only problem with it is that it does not pay well but the benefits are enormous.

When thinking about going into teaching, you would have to wonder if the kids these days are going to get worse and worse as each decade passes or will the behavior of the teenage psych remain the same as it always have in the past?

I'm just floating out there right now, with cycling the only love I have my life besides my family.

For you INTP's out there, were your early college years the hardest in your life in terms of where you are in the world and whats your place going to be in it for the future?

I don't think I have ever really known what my place was going to be. Most of the time I just went with the flow (like a dead fish...?), but in retrospect I can see that I did in fact make choices and decisions. Wanted to be an architect but thought (after visiting my uncles office) that it was too much about tedious details (I think it was the way he drew the grass on a house sketch...).
After slightly more than 10 years in big corporations (Research & Development) I was layed off and started my own business. Being an INTP I have finally realised that I am a lousy boss - even to myself - so I have stopped trying to recruit someone (perhaps I should hire a boss...!?). Wonder every day (or at least week) how I can manage to keep afloat... Must be that I'm good at what I'm doing - but many times I wonder about that, too. Have a close INTJ friend, and she's blessed with the knowledge of her own quality (I almost envy that).

I'm working on getting my PhD in biology right now with grand plans to become a college professor so I can do research and teach all those impressionable young minds. I love doing the research but have trouble wrapping it all up though. I can't seem to make myself sit and actually publish my papers, its a little baffling because I feel like I should be getting through this a bit better. I also find myself getting distracted easily by new things to think about, I just discovered philosophy and had no idea how cool it is until a month ago. I guess its a little late to switch careers now...

What are your plans for the future or for the moment? Anything you would like to do, imposed or recommended to do? Why do you want to do that profession, what made you choose it? If you are doing it, how do you like it?

We're all born with a specific purpose, designed specifically to fit certain ends, 'Ask not how god can serve you, etc'. I make computer games because I was designed to make computer games. I had no choice, the idea of free-destiny in my experience is a half-truth.

You can only do what you were meant to and be happy, or live out other peoples expectations and be depressed. I can't say making games is easy, as the creative cost of destructive energy is a heavy price to pay, namely depression etc, but this is the cost of all the creative arts, life is a case of equal exchange even for the good things, and nothing is for free.

Life is very much like the 'hero's jounrey', infact I'm working on a destiny/fate engine to prove that our lives are based on the archetype of myth which pre-exists existence in the time/space continuum. Why else would so many different religions and cultures share so many themes and motifs when they never had contact with eachother, death and rebirth, the resurrection, the fire-theft, etc.

I'm doing a course in forensic science at the minute, and that would be pretty kick ass as a career, but the knowledge of how to perform the perfect crime is also very useful...

I have no idea what I really want to do with my life.
People have suggested some careers that they think I would be good at...such as a musician, singer, therapist, and a lawyer.
However, musicians and singers are forced to be put in the limelight and have the potential to be famous, things I consider would be a complete nightmare. Therapists have to deal with people, which is something I would rather not do too much... And lawyers, once again, are people who have to deal with being the center of attention, at least in the courthouse.
I would prefer to be some sort of artist...or maybe an editor for a publishing company (that way I could criticize freely).
I'm not sure. I still have time to think about it, contrary to what teachers and the administration at school says.

Personally, I've spent a couple of years working/travelling/? until I finally settled on computer engineering, which for now seems to be pretty good (only on the first semester though). The structured thinking, analysing a problem and finding the optimal solution is a good way to work.
It also makes me constantly criticise programmers and others who do an inefficient job (programs that take up too large a chunk of the RAM, for instance).

Neurology is a very interesting subject. As soon as I start talking to my INFP/ENFP friends, through MSN, about the orientation areas of the brain and things like that they say stuff, "Maybe tomorrow, I'm really tired". It's so disappointing, because I like talking about. I always feel like I'm bothering them... Anyway, I haven't ever considered going into neurology myself, though I've found it a very interesting topic, somewhat because of my own learning disabilities. Understanding how the mind works though... is almost abstract. Which is the kind of fun thing about it. Thoughts are physical, but we can see the physical reaction of them. To me, to study the body in general, like anatomy might be boring. I couldn't go into a medical field, because I'm a bit grossed out by it.

I rambled on a lot in the other thread, right now I'm still a little vague about what I want to do. It all seems so damning to have the ONE THING you do for the rest of your life... Which isn't even statistically true apparently. Right now I'm looking into learning (more) Japanese and French, probably want to do something in translating and trade between counties. Part of me wants to go into genetics or sociology and (probably) specifically study "gender" and/or sex.

I thought of becoming a librarian, because I do like books and I like to read, but one was sort of nasty to me and reconsidered whether or not it would be a good idea.

I was training to be a tattoo artist, but the guy I was working with left the country so I'm working on my portfolio until i can get another apprenticeship. Come to think of it, I've got my Junior Cert in June and this is a horrific waste of time since I've got 4 projects to finish...

For anyone who dosn't know the J.C. is a state exam that determines what levels you can take for Leaving Cert, which in turn determines how many points you can get in your L.C., which in turn determines the courses and colleges you can get into, which in turn determines the rest of your life...

Having, it seems, a few years on the majority of you, allow me to suggest that after a period of immersion in whatever field you choose, to master the vocational aspects of it, your goal should be to own a business in that field or be the kind of professional that can have independence. Otherwise you will spend a great many years working for people who do not understand you and who will force you to do things that are nonsense, poppycock and kerfuffle, and otherwise shrivel your soul. Your real goal should be independence and autonomy. Anything short of that and you should factor in some misery. :-)

It's simple chime; be a bassist! No-one pays any attention to you but if you're good, you get to be the art of the band. I'm one and I have to say, in the most objective way of course, that I'm the only thing that makes our songs good. It definately isn't the lyrics;
"welcome to mr. crawfman's classroom,
where we learn about vegitation.
He tells us not to have sex on vacation
because of the increasing population."

Actually I kind of like the lyrics now.
"Waiting
on my mom
she better hurry up 'cus her car's a bomb.
I'm so hungry I'm gonna erode
And mom better hurry or she'll explode!"

Concerning physics, my sister's a physics student writing her Ph.D in biophysics, and while it's quite a lot of hard work and frustration due to the occassional unfortunate experiment or the like, she loves it.
I don't think it's a bad idea, if it's what you really want that's a good thing for you, most people never figure out what really drives them (I'm still considering what really drives me, even though I'm an engineering student at the moment).

For the past four years I've gone from one science topic to new ones. My current interest is particle physics, but it might change in the next few years, but it will most likely stay physics or astronomy related.

In the center of the world. (As opposed to the ear
The first lines were kind of entertaining, but the second ones were plain terrible.

I'm technically a high-school dropout. I just couldn't justify wasting my time in school anymore, as I couldn't honestly say I was learning a single new thing. So, then, it's all about the piece of paper you get, the diploma, right? So you can go to college.

Assuming I decide I want to go to college (and I don't, until I know what I want to do- which may or may not require college), I can just go to a community college for a year, and transfer. Colleges never look at your high school records after you've completed a year of college.

Once I found that out, I just couldn't take it anymore.

Currently I'm thinking of teaching English in a foreign country. It's highly advisable that one goes to college to acquire high quality jobs in those foreign lands, so I may end up doing the whole college thing after all.

Other than that, I once wrote a list of occupations that interested me.

The list was 2 pages long. I kept picking it up and adding things.

I don't care about high school. I only go because I want to go to college to learn. I hate it when people only want to go to college to get a job. I want to go to learn. *gasp* I mean why would anyone want to go to college to learn. -_-
