My would be the penguin.

The sophisticated thief that out smarted the Bat on several times.

Also he embodies the likeness of penguins which are awesome.

Dick Cheney.

He was the man holding the puppet strings, controlling the free world for eight years.

I agree with your point however, why do you like him.

Almost no one actually like dick Chaney that is why he was the first US Vis-President to not run for President in quite some times.

You know, if you and The Riddler from the old Batman series teamed up, you might be unstoppable. He's even got more than enough question marks to cover both of you.

Right now it's that sick fuck Putin.

Otherwise I'm with you on the Penguin, he's genuinely tragic in a way that the other Batman villains are not. And Batman returns is probably my favourite Batman franchise movie. Such a shame Burton just masturbates nowadays and keeps on delivering the same thing over and over.

More serious answers:

The Joker (Batman): Goes without saying. He's just one of the most classic villain, versatile enough to be interpreted in many different ways, with quirk and style and pathos tossed in. He also looks less threatening, while being very dangerous in his own way.

Dark Phoenix (X-Men): A good person corrupted unexpectedly by unfathomable power, choosing to end her own life rather than continuing to harm others. Murderer of 6 billion asparagus people + assorted and sundry, after she ate a star or three.

iamphoenix.png

Elektra (Daredevil): Another villain who gets a conscience and pays for it. Phoenix is about raw power and control, Elektra is fluid grace in motion. If only she hadn't fallen in love with Matt Murdock... Comes across as an ISTP/INFJ blend type -- maybe ISTP with high-developed Ni and some Fe awareness?

elektra.jpg

Megabyte (Reboot): Voiced by Tony Jay -- a beautiful cultured, melodious, but threatening voice. He's the quintessential megalomaniac ENTJ who wants to control all of Mainframe... but so much classier than his crazy cousin/sister Hexadecimal. Hyperlogical. You can almost respect him, because he's REASONABLE. Well, except for him being in charge of everything.
500px-Megabyte_4.jpg

I love supervillains; maybe later I'll toss a few more in.

EDIT: Sorry, had to come back NOW... I forgot a great one:

Sylar (Heroes): Played by Zachary Quinto. If you've never watched Heroes, you need to watch it to see Sylar. If you did watch Heroes, probably one of the reasons was BECAUSE you wanted to watch Sylar. He's a villain who makes a tortuous route back and forth between good and bad. His power is to basically emulate the power of any other powered individual whose brain he can examine closely; unfortunately, this usually meant killing anyone whose power he was learning. For long time, he was essentially a kind of twisted Pokemon master -- "Gotta collect 'em all" -- and just getting more and more powerful, the more abilities he accumulated.

Better yet, one can easily make the case for him to be a very detached INTP type.

Eli in there will be blood is probably my favorite come to think of it, he even makes Daniel Day Lewis come of as sympathetic.

It's crazy the disgust I felt for him, it was enough for me to feel genuine happiness when he was beaten to a pulp : /

Ellsworth Toohey from the fountainhead is another great villain. I have pegged down as a nihilistic xNFJ.

Jennywocky:

Yup the Jokers awesome, I think the Mask of Phantasm does the best job with him. The way he goes out in it is just perfect, a moment of fear then he just accepts his fate and there comes the laughter : D

Edit: Father Elijah in New Vegas! Honorary mention because I think he's an INTP.

Oh wow, yes, Tetsuo rocks -- much more familiar with the comic series, but so cool.

There are just too many to pick a "best one."

I mean, I wanted to toss in Galactus the last time + his band of merry Heralds. The guy eats planets. How much more bad-ass can you get?

Palpatine. Paracelsus is shaping up to be quite the peckerwood too.

Oh yeah, and Mantrid. He destroyed a universe.

Ice King and Lemongrab

How could I forget?

I also like the Hulk.

And the Venom/Carnage duo.

You're right Jenny... it's hard to narrow down.

The ultimate's depiction of The Red Skull was also pretty cool. Too bad he died so quick...

Lex Luthor is pretty good too at times, but I think that's more because of just how much I hate Superman.

I think the best villains are those with both limitations and motive. When they're too powerful I can't help but think the means by which they are overcome to be too contrived. Galactus, Thanos, DarkSeid... If they kill planets with such impunity, it seems ridiculous that the biproduct (protagonist) of such a planet would have any success against them. But they do... repeatedly.

Emporer Palpatine/Darth Sidius is great.

I suppose it's why ants cannot be slain by giants. They are just too tiny. :ahh:

I know, when I saw that suggestion, it was another . I mean, great villain.

Ray Batty was another cool one I hadn't thought of, although the thread title is "supervillain" which I was taking literally rather than just villains in general. Then again, Ray's kinda superhuman. I just watched that this weekend again-- probably Rutger Hauer's best work.

The Hellfire Club + Nimrod were some cool X-men villains from a ways back.

That battle in the park with Rachel running from the Hellfire Club and the X-Men, and then they run into each other and start fighting, and then Nimrod (the perfect sentinel) shows up to kill them all -- that was just so cray. What a great setup.

i'm a prize in a cereal box near you, so buy, BUY,
joker from batman has always been interesting

darth bane from star wars was an amazing badguy, he single handedly destroyed hundreds of sith because they were currupting the dark side (sounds silly but it's true) and created the rule of two

hk-47 also from star wars was an assassin droid disguised as a protical droid, created by darth reven to hunt and kill politicians and jedi. and like any good villain has tried to take over the entire galaxy on three seperate occasions

jarlaxle from the legend of drizzt, all the man moxxy

I tend to veer on the Well-Intentioned side of villainy. Since I prefer to appreciate characters within their respective Universes, I listed the following:

In the Marvel side it's Magneto
In the DC side it's Sinestro (in his later and more anti-hero portrayal)
In anime, its Lord Genome (Spiral King) from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Disclaimer: I should have listed L from Death note but I think he's the actual protagonist.

I have a love-hate relationship with Sylar. He has a lot of potential but the writers messed the story up. That Writer's Guild strike has doomed the series.

Yeah, Season #2 was definitely the worst ever.

They tried to salvage things in Seasons #3 & #4 and managed to partly pull the show out of the death spiral, but I still hold to Season #1 being the best.

Did you hear that one of the comic book companies will be continuing Heroes, just in comic-book format?
