Hello - I'm new here and I'm interested in seeing how other INTP's handle their work/time management.

I've always tested as an INTJ, but more recently I tested as INTP so I've been exploring the differences. I think previously I tested as INTJ because I that's how I want to see myself, but in reality I am a P. I'd like to say I am very organized and focused but realistically I'm going to be the one to turn my head, point and say "squirrel!" in the middle of a meeting Even though I am probably paying more attention to what is going on in the room than most people, I'm just easily bored in those types of group situations.

Lately, I have been experimenting with time maps as a means to stay on target and get my work done. I adjust them as things "happen" and in analyzing the results, it is obvious that I don't seem to have the discipline to stick to them, especially when new ideas attract my attention. This leads me to believe I am probably a P and not a J.

I currently have a lot of open projects that need closure. I'm a web developer, an artist and I manage/play in a band that's starting to make some big waves which means even more commitments and more tasks. I'm a time management junkie and I've tried and tweaked every system out there... Covey, GTD, Autofocus, etc. I like some things about each one, but none of them was ever a perfect fit. The one trait they all have in common is that they have enabled me to add more crap to my lists that need closure. It drives me nuts.

My biggest challenge is whether to work strictly by time blocks and schedule my work or just wing it and use my intuition. I fear that if I fly by the seat of my pants that I will drop the ball somewhere and miss a deadline. I'm very organized and I have lists of my projects so I know what I have to do. My issue is allotting a fair amount of time to complete it so I'm not cramming at the last minute. Time blocking is nice but I don't like to wake up and have my day dictated to me. If I decide I'm in the mood to draw a new design rather than code a web site, I'd like the freedom to do that. Both tasks earn me an income.

I know my priorities, but I tend to want to work on stuff when I feel like it but that style doesn't always meet the needs of my web clients. I think I work more efficiently when I wing it rather than forcing myself to work just because I scheduled it. However, because I have such an enormous task load, I worry that I don't have time to get it all done before deadlines creep up on me. Specifically, I don't stick to my drum practice schedule very rigidly which is scary because we have major gigs coming up in front of thousands of people and I don't quite feel prepared for them yet. That alone should motivate me to practice, but sadly I still procrastinate or I practice other music instead. If I don't schedule my day, I could potentially get so wrapped up in a practice session that I can spend a whole day practicing and then not do ANY client work and well... that's my main income. I can't find a balance.

So enough about me... what are some optimal ways for an INTP to manage their time and projects?

Don't?

Okay, I know that isn't really a solution. Spend some days practicing and others doing work for your web clients?
