What music genres do you prefer? And do you listen to music depending on what mood you are in? The reason why I am asking is because I heard that INTPs listen to music depending on what mood their in (i.e. happy music when happy, sad music when sad, etc.). In addition, I heard that INTPs prefer music with lots of minor chords. Is this true for you?

To answer my own questions: I'm really into instrumental music such as Bon Iver, Lykke Li & St Vincent. These artists are more avant-garde, unconventional and lean towards indie. I do listen to music that matches my mood. I do prefer music with lots of minor chords.

Doom metal
Stoner, desert rock
Oldschool & indie/underground hip hop

A lot of others come after, but on any given day I'm most likely listening to one of the above, plus Flying Lotus. And yeah I match the music to my mood, I think that's allowed me to appreciate a wide range of music.

I find that I also need music that matches my mood at the moment. And most of the music I like is in a minor key or at least has a melancholic vibe to it.

I like folk, folk rock, and psychedelic rock. 'The Boxer' by Simon and Garfunkel is a good folk example. Sort of melancholic, but not quite as the chorus seems to be in A minor while the verses are in C major.

'Passerby' by Dispatch is an example of the psychedelic stuff. Even has some reggae aspects to it, as well as plenty of improvisation on lead guitar. Again also very minor key oriented.

Drum and bass and dubstep, since before it was popular and I do tend to avoid the popular stuff, simply because it's worse. (Also, oldschool dnb /love)

Huge love for liquid / chillstep / everything relaxing, and I don't know but the repetitive drums and bass add on to that relaxed feeling to listen to while i'm doing stuff. Occasional house and trance, very occasional rock / metal / reggae and goa.

~Current favorite... To anyone hating on dubstep, listen to this before you judge.

I really like that song. I would not have even known to classify that as dubstep.

Did you know it before this moment? And it is dubstep to me...

The tempo, the build up. I absolutely love the lyrics AND the music.

Edit : Also, the song is still fucking epic. Fuck everyone denying it. My opinion is absolute.

I had never heard this song before now. And I'm no dubstep expert (The only dubstep I've heard is the intense wubwubwub stuff... always hated it), so if you consider this dubstep then I'll accept that. You know better than I do.

And before you mentioned it I hadn't even realized there was a subtle buildup there. At my first listen it came across to me as pretty static. That's not to say static is bad. It just gave me this feeling of standing still in a dark, warm infinity. But now that I can appreciate that gradual crescendo I like it even more.

Welcome to liquid / chillstep, where real dnb and dubstep lives. It's a relatively small subgenre, but there's alot of talent going around. At first glance it sounds so very diffrent from what is popular and recognised as dubstep / dnb, but the defining elements are the same in both.
(If you really really like it, i'll be glad to spam you with somewhat alike songs and stuff in the genre, but I don't think I should do that here. (just pm or something) I'll shush and hide now.)

On a sidenote, I should add occasional ambient, classical music and industrial. Hmh.

Yeah I wouldn't mind being introduced to another artist or two in the genre so I can go off exploring from there. Thanks.

Yeah, it's dubstep, but it's more of the sing-y dubstep.

avant-garde jazz, ambient, progressive rock/metal, post-rock/metal & IDM, largely.

I'd say more minor chords to, I think more than anything I love discordant music though. I could probably find something I'd like in most genres, but discord would likely underpin it and tie it in with my other listening.

.

Absolutely depends on my mood. Because of this, my ipod is very inconsistent towards a specific genre...that, and I have a general appreciation for all music genres, ranging from mainstream to the eccentric.

I like jazz, grunge, avant garde classical, some prog/post-rock, electronica, cheesy dad rock, and alternative. I saw someone insert stoner rock and, yeah, I also enjoy my Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. I usually look to push a mood when I take in music. When I'm grateful, depressed, exhilarated, or pensive I want the music to enhance that feeling. The exception might be anxiety. Music doesn't do anything to curb anxiety once it sets in so I usually prefer to read or something whenever I feel overstimulated or ragged. In some ways I dig the unexpectedness and emotional roller coaster of varied playlists. The whole experience is a maelstrom of novelty, memories, gushiness, and excitement.

I like practically ALL genres of music, and yes, depending on my mood. At work, especially on Thursdays when it seem to be the most hectic, I play my "Calm Me Down" Playlist which includes artists like Air, Badly Drawn Boy, Fiona Apple and Coldplay.
On the ride home or to work, I usually play my "Top Rated" list, which consists of anything in my iPod that I've given 4 or 5 stars... these include MF Doom, Mos Def, Bjork, Radiohead, Ben Folds, Massive Attack, etc.
When i'm feeling extra mellow, I listen to my classical music playlist which include the classics, obviously, but also artists like Vitamin String Quartet, Christopher O'Riley, who does a lot of Radiohead in Piano rendition, etc.
And when I clean my house, I usually listen to Dub step, Electronic, Alternative, Rock and some Hip Hop
And when I feel like going Old school I'll listen to some Hall and Oates, Queen, Juice Newton, Wham, etc....

Oh! And yes, I LOVE songs with a lot of minor chords and key changes.... It's like a wall decal in my room says, "Music is what Feelings Sound Like"
