What are you best at?

It's a simple question, what are you the best at? Possibly what are you the worst at?

I'm fairly certain most of us couldn't find 1 thing we're best at. Prove me wrong.

might need to edit the title (>you<)

Do you mean 'best' relatively or personally?

Personally: worst at anything to do with numbers (have dyscalculia) :(

best at: analysing qualitative data - sifting through ideas, spotting themes and cutting through to sound conclusions.

in the practical world I am best at making marmalade and jams - seriously, people phone me up in January to ask if I've made marmalade yet! My apricot and cardamom jam is legendary.

I'm also a killer mod

Not unlike Cassandra, the sole thing I am best at is seeing the underlying truth of any situation or set of ideas > which comes from a life of duty to one idea, absolute royalism, and discarding every illusion about humanity without beiing cynical of individual human worth.

This does not pay the rent...

I'm not very good at anything else.

I'm curious - how does this manifest - could you provide a concrete example?

I'm terrible with small details...I can't fold a towel straight and I never know the color of a person's eyes even if I look directly at them in a conversation. Besides being proficient in many subjects/activities, I'd say I'm the best at being myself and refusing to live otherwise...No one seems to be able to match me at that! Gotta love those inherent moral values that everyone else seems to lack...

Not really... Empiricists react to things as they happen...

Still, I can look at the Second World War, and whilst despising all concerned, not engage in self-loving condemnation of each event from a moralistic bias, but realising that history is weft from thousands of individually simple causes into complication.

For instance, take one famous war-crime: the British sunk the Fleet the French had bottled up at Oran; despite the fact the Germans were honouring their agreement not to use them and that the French had laid instructions to sink them themselves if the Germans changed their minds. This was a necessary gambit to persuade the Americans that the British were serious in resisting the Germans. This meant the Americans would continue to dishonour their status as neutrals by supplying the British until they and Russia entered the war which naturally meant the decisive end of nazism ( which is rather a good thing )*. The French, once again betrayed by Britain, blame the latter: the British blame the French; the Americans blame the Germans ( they are a simple people ). Now one can denounce this, analyse it to death, or applaud it as a courageous act of statesmanship. Instead one should not judge any actor, but simply conclude the inner truth that everyone's a bastard.

Masturbation is entirely subjective. There's no way to verify if you're actually best at it.
Geez, I sure hope there's no way. Keep that to yourself.

I think it's pretty obvious that was said for the sake of humour.

Why? Am I making you uncomfortable? :D

Or is it that you want to discuss masturbation? (having prompted this response) :p

I challenge you to a masturbatory duel, sir! :beatyou:

I will take that challenge. I think I can do it more times then you in a given time frame, pump out more volume, have a higher count, climax to a wider variety of pornography, and even out trick you (I've been perfecting the 'no handed back flip projectile triple climax').

Honestly? Probably math, when it comes down to it. I hope to eventually learn enough math to prove (if only to myself) that I actually AM genuinely good at math, but that isn't going to happen in university as a chemistry major even with a math minor. Hopefully I can pick up books on more advanced topics on my own eventually.

I'm also good at learning things that others would learn by rote in non-rote ways (which may or may not include a thorough understanding of why they are the way they are), which also coincides with the ability to learn them much more easily. This is how I learned most of the chemistry that I know now: partly from memorization of basic principles, partly from connecting new concepts back to those principles, and partly from a bizarre hybrid of the two that I struggle to explain to anyone, which I have (thus far) used primarily in organic chem I. (The way that I kept in mind the the end result of hydroboration-oxidation is an example of this.)

Conversely, I'm not wonderful with anything rote, partly from lack of practice but also partly from just general difficulty (I remember hating learning history early on for this reason.)

My worst skill is probably still dealing with nonverbal social cues, or socialization in general.

Oh that Whistling Jack Smith guy has a back up band. That bastard's a cheater!

Is it sad that I've studied Andrew Bird's technique so that I can get better? Yeah probably, but I've got the vibrato down pat! That man is brilliant!

Shortly after Michael Jackson bit it we had to play a bunch of his music at work and I got pretty good a whistling an accompaniment to the thriller album.

 I didn't realize I'd need hip-waders before cumming to this thread. Ha. Ha.

OMG part of this thread has taken the turn for... ...horniness and kind of gross...

If you guys like to masturbate so much, why don't you do that sperm bank thing? You could be making money and a lot of bastard children I guess...

There's apparently an egg donor program around here that'll cash out 5000 dollars for an egg.

No, that's not sad. It's cool. My friend could do an awesome trumpet with just her mouth. It was incredible. She was the best at singing.

Anyways.. the thing I'm best at is guitar. Nylon string guitar. In my own special way at least.

As diverting as masturbation is; I shall attempt to salvage whatever remains of this thread.

Strengths: I'm very good in a crisis. I don't have any formal education on the matter, but I'm also fairly tech-savvy. ;)

Weaknesses: I can't keep track of time and I tend to think negatively.

I have always found I'm really, really good at ignoring people. I tune out my environment automatically. It doesn't matter what is happening around me, I can even be pretending to engage (thats another thing I'm good at) and it is no distraction.

I'm really bad at paying attention to what people are saying when I'm not interested. Even if I want to make myself focus. Conversations usually go about like this:
My husband: blah blah blah blah.......blah blah so now there's a huge dent in the car.
Me: sorry, I was ignoring you, what?
Him: Damn it woman! I was driving along and there were these cows... blah blah blah blah...so much mooing... blah blah... dent in the car!
Me: Oh, m'kay. Glad you're home.

Yeah, could someone clarify this? Does the question mean "best" as in best compared to all other (known?) humans, or does it mean personal best out of all the things one can do?

I am really bad at rote memorising also. This includes names and dates. I avoided history for this reason - my main focus seems to always be why and how, not where, when and who.
I am good at answering questions I dont know the answer to by using rules of language, sequencing and general deduction from what I do know.

Although I find it personally rewarding to have these skills I also find it extremely frustrating that I have very poor skills at rote memorising. This coupled with "zoning out" when I am having something explained to me in a way I know I will not remember does my head in.

There are jobs I would be absolutely fantastic in if I had better ability at memorising. This seems to me to be the main way people impart information - I'll tell you once (maybe twice) and if you forget, youre an idiot. Tell me why it works, how it works I'm fine.

I am good at teaching because I can explain things more than one way. I dont believe anyone should teach anything unless they have this skill. Unfortunately most dont.

I hate puns, even when I make them unintentionally.

I'm actually quite good at speaking when I've had a little to drink. I get, "Well that was intelligent. You can't be that drunk."

I'm good at coming up with useless ideas. I also good at complaining. I can pretty much get right at the core of whatever bothers me about something. I can also see the humor in anything and thus rarely ever get truly offended (although I'll pretend to be offended sometimes, for various reasons).

I don't know. I've learned to harness drunken enthusiasm when I'm not drunk. Makes me a more ... likeable person I guess. It's funner too. I can't drink all the time. That shit gets to my stomach after a while and makes my face break out. Geez, everything does.

I can walk fine, people can't tell I'm buzzed. To be fair, I've never been wasted or drunk. Just tipsy and buzzed. A friend told me I became irritated when I got buzzed, but I still told her how to drive home, so whatever.

Yeah I've heard of those programs before, and the money makes them tempting, but somehow the idea of spreading my genes really bothers me.
However I would totally volunteer my DNA, or donate eggs for some science experiment, so long as I was paid well enough for it, and it doesn't involve making any clones, or something that would lead to serious harm coming my way.
