I've been looking for quite awhile, but I just can't figure out where to start. Should I start at a comic shop? I've been wanting to get into Dr. Strange, Namor, and Thor. I also hear there is going to be an Avengers X-men war.

This whole thing is new to me. But the Marvel lore just keeps drawing me in. I find myself spending hours reading wiki pages about the characters. So I figure there is someone on here that could help me get started.

Sounds like you are already into them. If you buy comic books for the storylines or the art or, both, then you are "into" comics.

I was into comics in the 1990's but, that was a time when Marvel and DC were considered to be a joke. It was a boom for the industry. Now, I only collect "Hellboy" TPBs and a few others. Really I only buy TPBs or Graphic Novels.

Marvel and DC got the picture and modernized toward the end of the 90's. And now, they are killing it again with their mega money making movie franchises.

I really don't like any of the Marvel/DC films,,,because they are starting their story lines over from scratch and occasionally giving a few "winks" to the real fans of the series.

It is possible to have comic book movies that don't have to re-introduce the characters. Movies like "300", "Watchman", "Sin City" "Hellboy" just throw you into their world. No introductions, all love for the true fan.

This is just my opinion.

DC just did a reboot of all their comics. It's called the New 52.
Also, Batman.

Haha. I promise I didn't notice this before, but I just revived a different comic thread which highlights a number of interesting comics.

Found here: http://www.intpforum.com/showthread.php?p=291365#post291365

I'm not much of a superhero person though so I can't help you there. Watchmen, like others have said, is exceptional though. :)

Frank Miller's "Return of the Dark Knight" is awesome. I would say Batman has became my favorite superhero...I'm waiting until the day they make a movie about the comicbook without having to re- introduce the characters. I loved the 90's animated series..it was so "Batman" I know it wasn't accurate but, It rang true to me. Mark Hammil as the voice of Joker..so good.

:D

Personally, I prefer Ren from Ren and Stimpy, though:

So epic.

Yeah, I don't read superhero comics much, but I do try to read the classics and "the dark knight returns" is definitely among them. I enjoy the Batman mythology a bit more as well, I guess I quite liked its darker, grittier atmosphere as opposed to the campiness of some of the other superhero stuff. :p

I've always liked batman, but the DC universe is just not interesting to me. The Frank Miller comics are pretty kool. I think I'm just going to go to a comic shop and talk to the guy in the store. Thanks for the advice.

If you are hard up on money you can dl most comics from torrents, and then read them through comical. My version stopped working for w/e reason, and I haven't been bothered fixing it, but I still probably read a thousand dollars worth of comics for free.

My favourite is probably the phantom, but I haven't read any comics in a laaawng time. I browsed some of the World War Hulk series as I passed through a comic shop a year or two ago, and it looked amazing (literally the Hulk vs everyone else on earth).

I enjoy watching the writers of the more powerful heroes struggle with issues of power consistency. Stuff like, Spiderman has the strength of approx 40 men, but this is very rarely reflected in the writing, as almost every opponent is apparently stronger regardless of the source of their strength (Lizard Man for example). He is constantly matched in strength with people like Wolverine, who (I'm pretty sure) don't even have augmented strength.

Neil Gaiman. Sandman. I was completely hooked on that one.
It's not so much a conventional superhero-comic, though.

to get into comics: wear a suit. attack someone for a greater good. hope that a starving artist feels inspired by your performance.

if it helps: in retrospect i feel that any collecting of series i did in my youth/otaku-times was a horrible waste of money. that includes series, that i am stil fond of, like akira or battle angel alita - a series is just too much paper for a single theme. i'm no longer fond of star wars, aquablue, metabarons.

the only comic books that i still enjoy having lying around are those of patrice garcia (allande and le fils de la nuit). his drawing style is so much like my own, only with awesome coloration. i also don't regret stealing that one moebius book about star travelers or frank miller's dark knight (where batman fights superman) from the library, when i was a child, but i have lost those.

I havn't gotten around to reading Preacher yet, but I hear its good. (:

If we're roaming outside superhero comics, I recommend most things by Chris Ware or Art Spiegelman.

I've been reading Akira for a while to, nanook, I've seen the film so I'm curious to see where it goes as it seems quite different.

I decided to check out "The Defenders". It has both DR. Strange and Namor. So it fits half my criteria right away. So far it seems pretty dark, and brutal. I'm also going to try out "Wolverine and the X-men". I'm going to pick up more later today, so I'll check out Preacher as well.

BTW: Do any of you guys ever relate with Wolverine or the Hulk/Bruce Banner? I've always liked both characters.

Scott Pilgrim!! aha

Chalk up another vote for Preacher from me, also I've heard good things about The Crow, haven't got around to reading it yet though. Also Transmetropolitan is somewhat amusing, albeit a bit vulgar sometimes.

i just came across the software mymanga.codeplex.com
it downloads and displays mangas
and it's rather Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
once you figure it out. the GUI can be somewhat confusing.
it makes incremental/on demand downloads of pages/chapters, books.
i just checked out AKIRA, in black and white, english. @Puffy

there is an unobtrusive label printed all over the reading screen - it reads "my Manga Beta".

i am not sure how complete the offered series are.
they are probably legal in that other country you don't actually reside in.
hm, i can hardly think of other mangas to check out ...
don't have the patience for comics anyway :(
