I think my gender and age are showing through a little.
Eh, I dunno. Code Geass just started to irritate me by about the 10th episode so I stopped watching it (plus Lelouch was like Kira reincarnate). I've yet to see Ghost in the Shell, but I've been meaning to.

  1. Rurouni Kenshin OVA's(not the anime series. Great story, great fight scenes, great characters)
  2. Cowboy Bebop(great music, great setting, great characters, humorous and serious)
  3. Trigun(the first anime I watched with the typical silly main character that is actually strong as hell. Cool bad guys. Great story)
  4. FMA Brotherhood(Great story and characters. Unpredictable)
  5. Shigurui manga(most beautiful attention to anatomic detail I have ever seen.....plus violence_
  6. Gantz Manga(No value in any individual character lead to a lot of suspense. Batshit insane and violent)
  7. Death Note(great story. INTP)
  8. Grave of the Fireflies(Have you ever cried to a cartoon?)
  9. Naruto---dont judge me, you watch it too.Must skip filler)
  10. Berserk(Violence and huge swords)
  11. Samurai Champloo(I think I like the music in this even better than Cowboy Bebop. Great fight scenes/animation. Good mix of personalities)
  12. Gungrave(Great story. A little downhill after the story...uhhh...changes a little but still good)
  13. Bleach(Started off slow, but once the Shinigami came to the real world I was blown away. Kind of losing its appeal now though. Must skip filler)
  14. Claymore(chics with swords)
-Not necessarily in order other than #1
-As you can tell, I like violence
-I refuse to pick just ten

Okay, so I've only watched the first season/series of Darker Than Black. I've heard the personalities of the various characters are rather betrayed and undermined by the writers in the second season.

I enjoyed the mental and emotional battle Hei goes through. Is he really as untouchable as everyone thinks? Does he actually care for people or is he the cold assassin he thinks of himself as? Is he using a wall of unfeeling badassness to cover his pain? Constantly telling yourself "I don't care" doesn't eventually make it true. That's a fight I've dealt with in the past. I liked the way the conciousnessless state of the dolls served to outline how human and emotional Hei really is. Even then the dolls can't themselves be completely devoid of desires and emotions. Finally, who doesn't want to be a vigilante from time to time? A nameless figure of justice is an idea that I like to ponder.

I liked Mushi Shi simply because it's artistically beautiful. I also really enjoy stories involving a lone traveler.

Fan service annoys me, and I like an actual story, so I usually skip over those animes with lots of panty shots and girls with an impossibly big chest. Ick. I'm also patient enough for a somewhat-slow beginning as long as the story is worth it. And then there are the cutesy animes that just overwhelm me with warm fuzzies like Princess Jellyfish :D

Interesting to see so many anime fans kicking around here. Pressured me into signing up and sharing my list quickly, haha. I'm seeing a lot of favorites listed already. I don't think I can really list a top ten in any particular order, but I can definitely pitch a few names out that I enjoyed.

1. Elfen Lied
2. Gantz
3. FLCL
4. Death Note

Those have all been listed already.

5. Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokura-chan (Club To Death Angel Dokura)
6. Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?
7. Infinite Stratos
8. Strike Witches
9. Dead leaves
10. Sekirei
11. Zombie Loan
12. Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari
13. Freezing
14. Seikon no Qwaser

Ok, that's more than 10, heh. The one I don't get the popularity of was Serial Experiments Lain. So many people seem to love it and consider it a really deep series, whereas I tend to find myself sided with all the cynical otakus who love referring to it as Cereal Experiments Lame. I just found it incredibly dull. :)

To me anime is something i like to turn my brain off during and just enjoy for the sheer randomness taking place. I don't mind a little fan service in the mix so long as it's entertaining, and not going too far. Strike Witches for example, I enjoyed thoroughly as a series. Even though it was pure fan service from start to finish.

I decided to dive into learning Japanese a while back, and I find anime has been a fun way to get more comfortable with the language.

I see. Can I condense that into "familiarity + mental preference"?

I liked Mushi Shi simply because it's artistically beautiful. I also really enjoy stories involving a lone traveler.

I don't see. What do you mean by "beautiful" or artistic? Is it related to you enjoying stories about lone travelers?

^Familiarity and mental preferences? Yes. That sums it up. I think INTPs might enjoy Darker Than Black because they may identify with the protagonist.

As for Mush-shi...It was drawn and colored beautifully in my subjective estimation. I did not mean the story was beautiful. I meant that the actual format of the show was beautiful...or rather beautifully rendered. I think the independent nature of each episode is interesting. (The show isn't entirely episodic.) I enjoy small stories about lone travelers discovering new places and interesting phenomena. I suppose this could be related to the non-episodic nature of the show.

I just watched Spirited Away this morning, and thought it was good. Kind of a Disney story, in delightfully demented Japanese fashion, lol.

Hmmm, the threads been banging around for ages now, probably run out of steam, but, not that anyone cares, I'll put mine out there just for the sake of participating.

Also thanks to this list, I can go and check out a few others that I havent come across in my travels. Im always trying to find good anime and Im struggling to find good series lately, they dont make em like they used to.

My 10 favourites, in no particular order
- Trigun
- Noir
- 3x3 Eyes
- .Hack//sign
- Initial D
- Now and Then, Here and There
- Cowboy Bebop
- Claymore
- Kiba
- Robotech (and, I guess, by extension, Macross)
- Dragonhalf (putting in here just for fun because it was so funny)

Some movies
- Ghost in the Shell
- Appleseed : Ex Machinima
- Nausicaa
- Castle in the Sky
- Armitage
- Akira (good ol classic)

Honourable mentions
- Nodame Cantibile - it was good, but after watching the live action, I thought it was better than the anime
- Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - It didnt quite have the pace I was expecting, but I did like the story
- Ergo Proxy - I had high hopes for this one, and while it was good, it got a bit stale in the middle
Outlaw Star - An almost serious anime, but still fun to watch
Ghost in the Shell - The series (Stand Alone Complex) was good, but not great because it chopped a lot between the Laughing Man thread and other non-related stories, which irritated me slightly. I have yet to see Solid State Society though.

I've never watched anime, I don't like it. But my friend recommended Ghost in the Shell to me, It's been lying around for a while now, never get around to actually watching it. Someone want to try and persuade me? Lol

EDIT: I read Dragon Ball when I was little though.

I've only seen a few series in my life time. As an adult I feel sort of silly without anyone around me making it seem normal to watch such things. I'm only interested in quality English dubs--the ones done with professional voice actors and sound departments.

What have I seen and liked:
- Cowboy Bebop (of course)
- Bleach
- Dragon Ball Z (as a child)

Those are the only ones I've ever really been exposed to other than Ghost in the Shell. For some reason, I didn't get hooked on that one. Bebop is fantastic. Firefly felt a lot like it does and I enjoyed it too. It must be a formula I like that just doesn't get used much in cinema.

DBZ I never finished due to them taking so long to translate all the episodes. I really would like to watch it again now that I'm an adult and all the episodes are done. Someone really needs to make a less-filler version of it, however. There's a lot of people standing around doing nothing.

What do you recommend for someone like me? Quality English redub, not embarrassing as an adult, and a plot that draws you in?

You should never let that stop you. Being "grown up" doesn't mean anything, in my opinion, heh.

If you want professional why not stick with the original Japanese voice overs?
That's what I'm planning to do once I get around seeing Ghost in the Shell.

The quality of the translation is compromised to make a dub that fits.
The language used for dubs is generally simplified and westernised and even deviate from the intended meaning a little, you lose most of what makes anime special.

That's unfortunate. I just don't enjoy media when I have to read subtitles since I spend all of my time reading instead of seeing what is going on in the scene. I may as well be reading a short, illustrated book.

I suppose what I'd like to see is originally-English anime made to replicate the experience you suggest that the original-language Japanese stuff has since there wouldn't be a loss in translation. That would of course depend wholly on the production team doing a good job in terms of a story and whatnot.

I'm not sure i know of ten animes worth mentioning, but i can give it a shot.

Full Metal Alchemist (I despise brotherhood.)
Soul Eater - I'm not sure if i'm embarresed to like this one.
Code Geass - Though i got bored and never managed to finish it.
Ghost Hunt - Short, but not dissapointing.
Fruits Basket - Wish it would continue on, but know it wont.
Hanasakeru seishounen - Romance with politics and brains.
Kaichou wa maid sama - This one does embarass me a little, but not enough not to mention it.

It's probably easier to just list the ones i don't like.

Wallflower - Has the dark side i look for in most animes, but the art is truly horrifying and takes quite some getting used to, it takes away from the rest of the story.
Hakushaku to yousei - I watched all but the last episode, because i was sure it would ruin it for me.
Ouran High School Host Club - Decent by the standards of plot, but horribly unoriginal. And obviously dissapointing in the end.
Special A - To similiar to Ouran to stand out in my mind. To unoriginal.
Bokura ga ita - Touching to that little girl inside us all, but sadly over dramatic from any other point of view.

Thats sad. If you're good at reading then subtitles should come naturally. There are many many titles which never get an English translation and I feel a bit sad to think people will miss out on such excelent stories. The fansubbers who put out their work do amazing jobs in exposing us to Asian anime, movies and doramas. And now that I have got used to reading subtitles, I definitely always prefer the original Japanese soundtrack, even if it does come with an English one.

My opinion here goes beyond anime, Ive discovered some great dramas (doramas) and movies from Japan, China and Korea. Entertainment that us Westerners can only really experience via subtitles, Im afraid, but every bit worth watching if you're into that sort of thing. Some of the Wu Xia C-Dramas and Korean epics have huge budgets and fantastic screenplay and martial arts and its a pity that the Western world will generally never see them.

No mention of Monster? I've just started watching it and it seems promising. Other than this I saw DBZ, Naruto and Bleach years back. More recently I've watched Death Note and Code Geass, which I thought were good (and have mentions abound.) I can't make a top 10 I suppose :/

I haven't seen so much animes to compare 10 best, so... hmm, I don't know if they are even 10 of them :D

1. Death Note (watched completly)
2. Code Geass (watching recently)
3. One Piece (childish so much I didn't watched it all)
. . . (obvious pause)
ONE-BEFORE-LAST. Naruto - too fantastic on me, I mean like all those techniques and ninjas seem to me like "And then Ekjgbk used his Gfvnoda Igoak no Jutsu to defeat :_!"! and rescue the princess."
LAST. Bleach - Totally not my style. Sorry fans.

And under the last one there is still pause for another, that I decided to not even mention I watched. EVER.

Fruits Basket :D

It's the only anime series I've really watched, all others I've only seen bits of them(Death note, naruto, black butler). I just recently started taking an interest in anime.

I did really like Cowboy Bebop the movie.

Also, not sure if this counts but I liked Ponyo.

Anyhow, I'm looking for a good anime to watch on Netflix that is available for instant play. anyone wanna recommend me one?

oh I almost forgot! Mushi Shi =) seen a few episodes of that. i like it.

Fruits Basket :D

Loved that one, corny as it was.

I stopped watching Bleach and Naruto after reading the manga and getting way ahead on the story, but I used to watch those. Completed Death Note as well. Don't think I've even watched 10 anime (unless you count bits and pieces).

Watching a dub of an anime is like watching 60% of the real product. I would strongly recommend subs over dubs. You get used to it.

Ok i'll bite. I have watched many animes in my time. It's hard to order them by preference but i'll classify them as follow:

Godlike
-----------------
Kaiji
Death note
Hunter X Hunter (best naruto/bleach type anime i know by far. Only good at episode 5+)

Very good
-------------------
Code Geass
Bleach (good before the fillers which destroyed it)
Claymore (you have to be patient but it gets really good halfway)

Novel / Entertaining
--------------------
Baccano! (think pulp fiction in anime form)
Twelve kingdoms (interesting exploration of philosophy through storytelling)
Eden of the east (fun concept similar to death note)
Ghost in the shell (realistic view of the future but a tad slow)

I know this thread is about "top 10" and this probably doesn't make anyone's list, but I'm going to ask anyway. Has anyone tried the recut version of DBZ called "Kai"? I guess the whole series is only like 90 episodes long in this format from start to finish. Supposedly all filler has been removed, the art has been restored to vibrant condition, the remaining film damage was removed, and the series is available on Bluray. I'm going to try it but would like some impressions going in.

DBZ with less drawn out filler and "oh face" reactions, plus much better animation. I would recommend if you like the series.

Hmm, Haven't seen nearly the amount you all are talking about but here goes:

1. Death Note (I was so skeptical about this show but after Ep. 2 I was completely sold on it. Not only the best anime but best overall series I've ever seen. That could be in part because I don't really watch much "TV Programming"

2. DragonballZ, we all know about this one, plus I love Gohan up until he's a high schooler. And Piccolo was cool too.

3. Naruto Shippuden (the shippuden is much better, Akatsuki fight scenes were very good) And the Uchiha are just nasty.

4. Suzuka (don't know if u ever heard of this one but it was about this guy trying to get the girl of his dreams.)

5. Bleach, the fillers are brutal, but u gotta love the facepalm on Aizen.

6. Samurai Champloo, very urban nice animation just a cool show.

7. Inuyasha, very abrupt ending until the new episodes came out.

8. Yu-Yu Hakusho, was young when I saw this but great show.

9. Ouran High School Host Club, just found the show entertaining to watch.

10. Black Cat, Train looked like he never even came close to losing any fight. I liked all the characters.

Side Note: I absolutely hate anime with mechs (Gundam Seed, Big O)and other stupid stuff like that and ones that feature guns only, really bad stuff.
