Drenth's INTP book has a paragraph addressing the issue of hoarding time. I had always considered myself a fairly generous person until I read that section and immediately recognized that while most people strive for a work-life balance, I strive for a work-life-mytime balance (with weight skewed towards that last category).

Anyone else recognize this trait? Better yet, anyone found ways of living with it?

Is it causing specific problems for you?

Not specifically. It's more of a symptom of something and a huge blindspot. Hoarding by definition is an unnecessary accumulation, a bad habit. And hoarding is never for the sake of the thing hoarded. It's for the perceived gain (eg, security, status, completion). So I'm wondering if hoarding time is a symptom of some underlying dysfunction, perhaps resulting from an unexamined belief about the urgent need for a Eureka moment. Or... I don't know. I do know that it has been unconscious till now and I suspect that finding the underlying cause would yield some hefty golden nuggets of self-knowledge.

Interesting. I guess all you can really do is increase awareness of that process of hoarding. Paying attention to when and in what circumstances it tends to come up.

I would be wary of labelling it as a negative habit, but that's just me. I know that without at least some time to myself I become not at all fun to be around. So in a roundabout way, that time hoarding is actually beneficial to others when I am around them.
