Hey folks check this out : http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djublonskopf/Flatearthsociety.htm
These people really believe that the world is flat.

Edit: someone said that the above site was a hoax. I had been wanting to post something on the flat earthers for quite some time now so I googled the site, read a few pages and assumed they had changed their site. Oops. Try this site. http://theflatearthsociety.org/cms/

Here's a link to their web links page http://theflatearthsociety.org/cms/...view=category&id=2:flat-earth-links&Itemid=48

A reasonable hypothesis. Further reason, however, would suggest that the world is a haven for elephants. Of course, of course.

I'm hoping it is. I have read a few pages and so far they are serious. I have also read some other things from other sites (I can't recall the links right now) and those people from those other sites are dead serious. Perhaps this thread belongs in the Psychology and Neuroscience section of INTPForum.

^ dude...

The Flat Earth Society is not in any way responsible for the failure of the French to repel the Germans at the Maginot Line during WWII. Nor is the Flat Earth Society responsible for the recent yeti sightings outside the Vatican, or for the unfortunate enslavement of the Nabisco Inc. factory employees by a rogue hamster insurrectionist group. Furthermore, we are not responsible for the loss of one or more of the following, which may possibly occur as the result of exposing one's self to the dogmatic and dangerously subversive statements made within: life, limb, vision, Francois Mitterand, hearing, taste, smell, touch, thumb, Aunt Mildred, citizenship, spleen, bedrock, cloves, I Love Lucy reruns, toaster, pine derby racer, toy duck, antelope, horseradish, prosthetic ankle, double-cheeseburger, tin foil, limestone, watermelon-scented air freshner, sanity, paprika, German to Pig Latin dictionary, dish towel, pet Chihuahua, pogo stick, Golf Digest subscription, floor tile, upper torso or halibut.

Perhaps the site is a hoax. I only read a few pages of that site. There are people who believe the earth is flat. I have read some of their shit. It's pretty funny.

I believe this is the site I viewed a while ago http://theflatearthsociety.org/cms/

I don't have time to read it right now but it looks familiar.

I just dont see it LOL i wanted the argument to be a good one, but it only contradicts itself and doesn't even use accurate physics.

1. Maintaining speed they said - If outer space were a vacuum, then there would be no problem. But space is not a vacuum, it is instead filled with ether. The earth would have to have been pushing its way through the ether for all those billions of years. Shouldn't it have slowed somewhere along the line?

2. Accelerating earth they said - It is, according to "round Earth" theory, orbiting the sun at a radius of around five-hundred million kilometers. Were this the case, the Earth would be an accelerated object in circular motion around its sun. And thereby are the problems introduced. The Earth accelerating in circular motion would behave no differently than would a car taking a corner: loose objects (humans and animals would act like loose change or a cup of coffee on the dashboard) would slide around, or be thrown off completely.

The contradiction - First of all, the planet is held by the suns gravity and would be more accurately compared to a ball on a string being spun around and around. A constant force holds the earth on its path instead of depending on bursts of friction like a car. Bad website people :beatyou:. And with gravity accounting for the earth maintaining its distance from the sun, wouldn't their idea of ether slowing the earth, but the earth still building momentum due to centrifugal force.. eventually result in a maintained speed?

Regardless, was all a waste of time to say, since everyone knows the earth is round and stuff :D but hey, what else do i have to do.. Oh hey, i could give my own reasoning for believing the earth is round ;)

AND here it is, if one believes that there was a big bang, they know that all of the elements were either distributed or formed during the big bang, expanding outward, any solid material would impact other solid material and would instantly be molded together due to the intense heat, constantly being balled up and drawing in more material as it gained gravitational mass.

That and nobody has sailed over the edge yet :phear:

One must ask the question, has science become so complex to the average person that its theories sound just as plausible as those proposed by groups like the flat earth society and creation science (another group of crazies)?

The world is flat is as true as pi = 3.14.

A good assumption within a large domain of applicability.

On a more serious note, if you think the world is flat in a non-local sense, you're probably just doing it for the attention.

No I don't think the world is flat. I just thought it was some funny bullshit that people might be interested in.

Oh wow this sounds like a crazy as hell faction in fallout. The basis of this is stupid, the world couldn't be flat unless you want to say the laws of physics work on old video game logic where you can walk off one side of the screen or map and magicall appear on the other side .

The human race seriously couldn't have become this stupid, not this quick. It has to be a joke, any educated person would know this is wrong. Of course it could all be a anti-capitalism movement, similiar to EyeSeeCold's statement, the world is all about paper money and all and that is flat, so a clever name to fight against the current system, but I don't think these people are that clever.

More ranting, plus more, couple more words, ten more paragraphs and I am done.

No not flat, fiat, government rule that allows money to have power.

I don't think it's crazy for someone to think that the world is flat. How could anyone know? You can't be at all places at once to observe the roundness and even if you could how do you know an evil demon isn't fooling you at every turn*.

So you believe the world is made up of old video game world map logic? Like pac-man logic? You know there is no proof this isn't so. Because it would be a very very sucessful illusion.

You're confusing 2D with a flat surface. Either way, all I'm saying is you can't be sure.

The argument that the sun revolves around the earth is far more valid, but still ultimately wrong.

Earth has a definite curvature. The only way one could start somewhere, go along the circumference, and end up in the exact same place, is if that shape were round. And if he can do that on an infinite amount of circumferences within that shape, then the shape must be a sphere.

But how do you know you have actually gone anywhere? Cities and lands could have just been pre-loaded before you arrived. You might not even actually be moving. There is no spoon.

So you are following old video game logic, in a sense. And here is the failure, go to an ocean. You can look outwards, look as far as you can, use equipment to see further, and you will notice, the land curves, if it didn't you could see what was on the other side on a clear day. With good equipment people in California could watch people in Japan in a flat world, but because of the curvature of the earth they can't.

I dont believe the world is flat, but you guys assume things just as easily as people in the past that thought the earth was flat.

What if all the pics of earth you have seen all your life were fake! Did you ever see earth yourself from a spacecraft??? What if NASA has given you fake pictures!! Not saying that it is like that or some new conspiracy... But consider that you are a dumb fool as well who just assumes stuff because you saw pictures that you didnt take yourself!

Just because every fool on earth believes the pictures, thats why you believe the pics.

I can just as easily fool you that the world is a cube, if i put you in a life where every picture is of a cubed earth and all people tell you its true. you would believe it.

so what are you trying to be all superior against people who think the earth is flat. you are the same. you dont use emperical proof of experiments you did yourself, you use trust in what others say and show you. they do the same.

If there were some meaningful motive there would be for falsifying the pictures, then I surely would be suspect, since I am suspect of motives.

What do we mean 'flat'? I had always assumed one meant 'like a cube,' but apparently not.

Honestly, the first time I was crying laughing.

I think it is lol, did you see the "medals' next to people's avatars? "2010 witch hunt award" lol.

I found "flatearthsociety.org" a few years ago, a teacher was talking about it. Funny stuff, I don't think they are serious though.

Before this crops up... (although It might not) It is a common misconception that people in the middle ages thought the earth was flat. While this may be true about the ignorant masses, those with some education, or sea-experience (navigators, cartographers etc) knew the earth was spherical. The ancient Greeks knew the Earth was spherical and made several estimates as to its circumference.
